Vittly shows the official food hygiene rating for places you're about to eat at — and, just as importantly, when that rating was given. A hygiene rating is a snapshot from one inspection. A 5 from last month and a 5 from four years ago are not the same thing, so Vittly always shows the date beside the score and flags a rating that's getting old. WHAT YOU GET • Ratings near you — a map of nearby places colour-coded by rating, with clustered pins that show the spread of scores in an area at a glance. • Search by name or place — find a specific restaurant, cafe, takeaway, pub, school or shop. • The full inspection detail — the overall rating, the date behind it, and the three underlying scores (Hygiene, Structure, Management) with the FSA's own wording for each. • Plain-language explainers — tap any of the three scores to see what that area actually covers, what the inspector checks, and what it doesn't tell you. • Food recalls and allergy alerts — the FSA's alerts feed, with the allergens named. • The 14 allergens explained — what each one covers, the other names it hides behind on a label ("whey", "casein" and "ghee" all mean milk), and where it's easy to miss. • Save the places you care about, and get told when a saved place's rating changes. • Widgets for your Home Screen and Lock Screen, plus Siri and Shortcuts support. • Fully available in Welsh as well as English. BOTH UK SCHEMES, RENDERED PROPERLY England, Wales and Northern Ireland use FHRS — a 0 to 5 number. Scotland uses FHIS, which gives a named result (Pass, or Improvement Required) and no number at all. Vittly shows each scheme in its own terms and never converts one into the other or ranks them against each other. HONEST BY DESIGN • Nothing is averaged, estimated or predicted. If a place has no rating, Vittly says so. • Places awaiting a first inspection are listed as awaiting inspection, not quietly dropped. • Exempt premises are shown as exempt. • Ratings that are getting old are flagged as old. • On the three underlying scores, lower is better — Vittly says so rather than assuming you know. STILL THERE? The FSA register can lag behind reality, so Vittly cross-checks free public sources — including Companies House for registered companies — to flag a place that may have closed or changed hands. You can also tell Vittly a place has closed, and see how many other people have reported the same. FREE, WITH NO CATCH Everything Vittly does is free, forever. No accounts, no adverts, no subscription, and no feature locked behind a purchase. If you want to support it there's an optional one-off Supporter purchase and a tip — the Supporter unlocks alternate app icons and a badge, and nothing else. PRIVACY Vittly has no analytics and doesn't track you. When you search near you, your coordinates go to the Food Standards Agency only to run that one search — never stored, never tied to you. The one thing it records is optional: if you report that a place has closed, that report is published to a shared public database so other people can see it. It carries the place's FSA id, a timestamp, and a pseudonymous account identifier that Apple attaches to it — never your name, email or location — and you can remove it at any time. That single feature is the only reason Vittly's App Store privacy label isn't "No Data Collected". WHAT A RATING IS NOT A hygiene rating covers food safety at the last inspection. It is not a judgement of the food, the service, or how a kitchen handles allergens. If you have an allergy, always tell staff. Vittly covers the United Kingdom.
