## What is Vocabbie?

The best app for learning Finnish and 89 other languages. Flashcards, a handcrafted Finnish course, and speaking practice that checks the sentence you said.

Finnish has fifteen noun cases and few words you can guess.

Most apps hand you a list of nouns and wish you luck.

FINNISH FLASHCARDS THAT COME BACK
Add a word you met today, or pick a topic and get a deck back. Spaced repetition brings cards you get right back later, with the gap growing each time, and cards you fumble back sooner. Four ways to review, from picking a translation to typing it out with the answer hidden.

A COURSE, NOT A WORD LIST
Finnish is where we went furthest: a course written by hand. One hundred and seven Finnish grammar lessons on the parts that actually stop people: why the word changed shape, what the partitive is for. Real conjugation tables you can tap to hear. Short enough for one bus ride. Still in beta, and still growing.

SPEAK FINNISH BEFORE YOU HAVE TO
Talk to the app in Finnish and it answers in Finnish. It tells you whether what you said was right Finnish, and shows the translation when you want it. If you freeze, ask for a line and say that one instead. Better to get it wrong here than at the counter in a shop.

FINNISH PRONUNCIATION, HEARD FIRST
Every word and every sentence can be read aloud, so you know how it sounds before you try it out on somebody.

AND 85 MORE LANGUAGES
Finnish got the handcrafted course, and the rest of the app is the same everywhere: the flashcards, the lessons and the speaking practice all work in 85+ languages. A second language does not mean a second app.

Free to try: three decks and the flashcards. Paid plans raise the deck cap and the daily limits on lessons and speaking practice.

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 4.9.0 — 2026-08-20

Croatian and Finnish have been rebuilt. Both courses now follow the order a published textbook teaches in, so numbers, days and the words you actually need turn up early instead of halfway through. Each lesson says its rule in a sentence you can read, shows you the word changing rather than hoping you notice, and ends with a line you can go and use.

Every lesson used to open with the same game. Croatian now draws on twelve different ones across the course and Finnish on ten, and no two lessons in a row play the same pair.

When a code to sign in didn't arrive, the app would say it couldn't send one, having already sent it. It tries again before saying anything now. Same on a patchy connection anywhere else: a request that dies in the air gets a second go instead of an error.

Two smaller things you might have hit. Words in a lesson no longer show the same meaning twice, so the forms you are meant to be telling apart look different. And the listening screens stopped asking you to sort words on a screen with nothing to sort.

Plus a bunch of under-the-hood improvements and bug fixes.

### 4.8.29 — 2026-08-09

Lessons don't look like a list any more. Your course is a path you climb: five stops at a time, the ones you've finished sitting behind you, the next one waiting, and the rest locked until you reach them. Tap a stop to see what it teaches. Home drops you straight onto the path, so starting a lesson is two taps.

Two small things that had been wrong for a while: the buttons you tap to say whether you got a card right were different heights with the words shoved left, and back arrows sat closer to the edge of the screen than everything below them. Both fixed.

Plus a bunch of under-the-hood improvements and bug fixes.

### 4.8.28 — 2026-08-05

Limits run by the day now, not the week. On the free plan that's a lesson and three speaking turns every day; on Lite it's three lessons and fifteen turns. Nothing left to wait a week for.

Speak has been flattering you. Say something wrong and it would write down the correct version, tell you well done, and move on. Lovely way to learn nothing. It now writes down what you actually said, mistakes and all, and shows you how it should have gone, and if it couldn't make you out it says so instead of guessing. The coach starts talking without the long awkward pause too, and the proper voices are back after a spell of your phone's robot one filling in. If our voice service ever falls over again, a backup takes over by itself.

The buy screen behaves itself. It stops offering a second subscription to people already paying, stops calling you a free user when you aren't, stops waving a discount that doesn't apply to the plan you picked, and stops stepping in front of you when you haven't hit any limit. The Premium tab disappears once you're paying. The deck we hand you at the start no longer counts against your three. And it doesn't sulk for the rest of the session when your connection wobbles as you open the app.

Listen was clipping the last syllable off some Finnish words, so they sounded like something else entirely. Fixed. After your first lesson the app now checks the level actually suited you. And there's a fox dancing on the sign-in screen, because a still one was sitting there doing nothing.

If you never found it: decks can be merged with a swipe, and the app will say so once. Plus a bunch of under-the-hood improvements and bug fixes.

### 4.8.27 — 2026-08-01

Tidy up your decks: pick a few, tap Merge, give the result a name, and they become one — cards, streaks and favourites all move across. Adding several cards in a row no longer boots you back to the deck after every one; the form just clears and waits for the next, and if you're offline it says so instead of pretending to save. Your level is easier to find and finally explains itself — "Just starting", "Conversational" or "Near-fluent", each with a line about who it's for — and it shows under your language so you can see it at a glance. Underneath, the app moved to a newer foundation, which keeps it running smoothly on the latest phones. Plus a bunch of under-the-hood improvements and bug fixes.

### 4.8.26 — 2026-08-01

Study sessions are longer now: thirty cards instead of ten, and you can pick your own number in Settings. There's a new way to review as well, where you see the English first and have to come up with the word yourself. Harder, but that's the point. Renaming a deck no longer hides the box behind the keyboard. Speak holds up better when the AI stumbles, so you're less likely to be left watching the dots. And the app reads better in twenty languages after a proofread, including a few spots where the wording quietly assumed you were a man. Plus a bunch of under-the-hood improvements and bug fixes.
