## What is Vocalume?

Vocalume gives people with serious speech differences a clear voice — on real phone calls, in a natural version of their own.

For people living with ALS, cerebral palsy, stroke, Parkinson's, or severe dysarthria, being understood can be exhausting — and phone calls can be the hardest part. Vocalume speaks what you type or tap in a clear voice built from your own using Apple Personal Voice — in person, and now on real phone calls.

PHONE CALLS IN YOUR VOICE
- Call any US number. The person you call sees YOUR phone number, not a stranger's.
- Type mid-call, or tap a saved phrase, and the other person hears it in your clear voice.
- One tap switches to your real voice whenever you want — you are always in control of how you sound.
- Speakerphone comes on automatically, so you can read and type while you talk.

IN PERSON
- Speak mode: talk or type, and Vocalume says it aloud clearly.
- Quick phrases: your most-used sentences, one tap away.
- Calibration: read short passages and get an honest recognition-accuracy score.

YOUR VOICE
- Connect an Apple Personal Voice (created free on your device, about 15 minutes of reading) so Vocalume sounds like you.
- No Personal Voice? Choose a natural system voice and switch anytime.
- Adjustable speaking rate.

PRIVATE BY DESIGN
- Your Personal Voice model never leaves your device.
- Speech is processed transiently — never stored, never used for training.
- No account. No ads. No tracking.
- Your phone number is used only to verify your caller ID, so your calls show as you.

GETTING STARTED WITH CALLS
- Verify your number once (about 30 seconds) so your calls show your caller ID.
- Calling currently supports US phone numbers.

Reliability: calls now re-check their audio setup every time you dial, so calling keeps working no matter what you used the app for in between.

Your Personal Voice is now picked up automatically once it's available — no need to select it by hand in Settings.

Smarter handling when a Personal Voice loads slowly, so your own voice is used whenever it possibly can be.

### 1.4 — 2026-08-10

Calls now announce Vocalume the moment they connect (you can change or turn off the announcement in Settings), so the person you call knows what's happening while you type.

Clearer in-call guidance: type or tap a phrase and it's spoken to the other person in your voice — your microphone stays off until you switch to your real voice.

Major reliability improvements to how your voice is carried into calls, including automatic fallback to a system voice if your Personal Voice can't be used on a call.

Call from your Contacts: tap “Choose from Contacts” to pick who you’re calling instead of typing a number. Vocalume never reads your address book — only the number you tap is used.
