## What is VolleyRef?

The easiest way to referee a volleyball match.

VolleyRef turns your phone, and now your Apple Watch, into a complete referee scorebook. Tap to score, and the app handles rotations, substitutions, and lineups automatically so you can focus on the match, not the paperwork.

Whether you're a parent keeping score at a club tournament, a coach running a scrimmage, or an official working a varsity match, VolleyRef has you covered.

SCORE ANY FORMAT
Built-in rules for FIVB, USAV/NCAA, NFHS, and beach volleyball. Or create your own custom rules: number of sets, points to win, players on court, and more. From 2v2 beach to full 6v6 indoor, one app does it all.

SCORE FROM YOUR WRIST
Leave your phone in your pocket. The Apple Watch app puts the score on your wrist: tap to award the point, undo with a labeled button that tells you exactly what you're undoing. Watch and phone stay in lockstep and reconcile automatically if they ever disagree, even after a restart mid-match.

AUTOMATIC ROTATIONS & LINEUPS
Enter your roster and VolleyRef tracks who's where. Rotations happen automatically on side-outs. Substitution rules are enforced for you, including libero tracking with up to 2 liberos per team.

LIVE SCOREBOARD, TV MODE & STREAMING
Share your match with a link or QR code and spectators follow along live on their own phones. Pair with a TV or projector for a full-screen scoreboard, complete with a warmup countdown before each set. Streaming the match? Add the scoreboard overlay link to your broadcast for a clean live score bug. No extra hardware needed.

NO WIFI? NO PROBLEM
Bad gym WiFi is where VolleyRef shines. Your devices discover each other courtside and pair directly over a secure, encrypted device-to-device connection, so phone, watch, and TV stay in sync with zero internet. Every point is saved on your device the moment you tap it and syncs to the cloud when you're back online. You will never lose the score.

FULL REFEREE TOOLKIT
- Timeouts and technical timeouts
- Yellow and red cards (warnings, penalties, expulsions)
- Substitution tracking with eligibility enforcement
- Undo/redo on every action
- Point-by-point history per set

OFFICIAL SCORESHEETS
Generate FIVB-style scoresheets automatically, even mid-match for the sets already played. Export as PDF, ready for league submission or your own records.

TEAM TEMPLATES
Save your rosters and reuse them match after match. Set player numbers, captains, setters, and liberos once, then start a new match in seconds.

MATCH SHARING & STATS
Share live match links with parents and fans. After the match, review point-by-point breakdowns, player stats, and set summaries, and export highlight cues to line up your match video.

FREE TO TRY
Your first 3 matches are free. Subscribe to unlock unlimited matches with every feature included.

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 2026.1237.1338 — 2026-08-26

Scoring that keeps up with you, from your wrist to the big screen.

- Double-tap your wrist on Apple Watch to score for the serving team. Turn the Digital Crown first to send the point to the receiving team instead.
- The Apple Watch card on the home screen now opens a companion sheet that takes you straight to the watch app.
- Starred matches sit at the top of your match list, and the home screen has a new Favorites section that keeps them one tap away.
- Deleting or restoring a match always sticks now. If the change is still on its way to the cloud, the app says so instead of pretending it is done.
- Matches deleted on another device disappear from your list right away, and matches created on a newer version of the app reach the cloud even before our servers catch up.
- Nearby sync pairs only with phones scoring the same sport, and phones that have left the area drop off the list as soon as you come back to the app.
- Spectator links open straight to the live action. Before the first serve and after match point, they show a clean overview with the result instead.
- In TV mode, the join card rotates through several reasons to watch, and displays can exit straight back to the pairing menu.
- Fix a wrongly entered player number or name mid-match from the player menu. Match history shows the corrected details throughout.
- Practice tutorials now record every step you take, substitutions, timeouts and sanctions included, instead of stalling partway through.
- Animations play for everyone now. With Reduce Motion turned on, the court used to sit completely still, which made a tap look like it had been ignored.
- Starting a new set cleanly hides the previous court's player markers behind the lineup board.

### 2026.1232.2324 — 2026-08-21

This update is all about courtside reliability.

- Score from your Apple Watch with confidence: watch and phone now reconcile automatically if they ever disagree, even after a restart mid-match.
- Nearby sync got faster and steadier: devices pair more reliably, and every device-to-device connection is now encrypted.
- New streamer overlay link: add a clean live score bug to your broadcast.
- TV mode now shows a warmup countdown before each set and picks up right where it left off after a reconnect.
- Anything that needs the internet now retries quietly in the background instead of stopping you when you're offline.
- Clearer nearby-device permission prompts, plus spectators can now see when the scorekeeper is live.

### 2026.1208.2044 — 2026-07-28

- Fixed PDF scoresheet generation

### 2026.1204.1922 — 2026-07-24

- Improved sync reliability when receiving batches of match updates.
- Protected real match history from being replaced by corrupted device data.
- Restored match history more reliably across devices.
- Strengthened logout cleanup to better protect account data.
- Improved push notification retry reliability.

### 2026.1188.2325 — 2026-07-09

- Added point-pressure support and refined the scoring experience for faster, clearer match tracking.
- Improved the countdown ring and timer behavior for better at-a-glance game timing.
- Smoothed page transitions for a more polished, responsive feel while moving through the app.
- Improved sync reliability, including better recovery from connection and ownership changes.
- Fixed a timer edge case so completed timers stay consistent after stale updates.
