This has all the information the college textbook has, except for it has little activities you can do over and over again to really learn music theory. It has the same information as a college course would have really good at teaching you and much cheaper than college. ### 4/5 — Sounds? *2025-10-18, version 3.6.3* I was surprised that the notes in the early exercises don’t play sounds. Wouldn’t it be helpful to start to hear these patterns as well as see them? Seems like an obvious and easy fix. The only sad part is the pricing model because I just can’t stand these overpriced subscription models. This meant that I had to power through the app and ditch it as soon as possible even though I would’ve preferred to keep practising every now and then. Up until now, my music theory education has been sparse and patchy (and also ended 29 years ago). When I picked up guitar and songwriting, I tried a few different apps to work through music theory. Gave myself a headache laboriously counting leger lines, and visualising piano keys against frets to count through scales. It took so long to figure anything out. Waay is amazing. It is structured for songwriters and it has quick and easy drills to help you internalise the lessons without having to memorise anything. It makes it so much faster to figure out key and structure. It’s clear how much planning, work and design has gone into this program. I’m looking forward to the next installment, and can’t recommend Waay highly enough. ### 5/5 — Incredible music learning tool *2025-05-03, version 3.6.1* I’ve used so many apps and programs to try to learn music theory and this changed everything for me. The lessons are clear and concise and enjoyable. The developer Alex has a great calming voice. The practice tools are incredibly useful and helpful. This is the perfect tool for songwriters who want to understand the foundation of music theory without any of the extra fluff that you don’t really need. There is so much content in here and the best part is it not a monthly subscription. I personally wrote to the developer and asked for more content even and that I would gladly pay more money for it. ### 5/5 — It’s like magic *2025-04-30, version 3.6.1* I was sceptical about all these effusive reviews because, surely, no app could be THIS good. But believe the hype. I have been trying to learn music theory for 20 years now, in person, online, with official books, and it’s like my body and brain physically reject the attempt to learn. This app helped me learn and understand the Circle of Fifths in like 30 minutes of explanation and then practical test quizzes. It’s insane, it’s cliche but it really “de-mystified” that concept for me. It also seems to take the same approach that language learning apps use in terms of prompting you to re-test yourself to reinforce what you’ve learned, which seems to really work too. From the get-go it seems to be focused on getting you into songwriting, which is not what I want it for honestly, but it doesn’t matter, however the dev made this, he deserves your respect, admiration, and money. The presentation is excellent and the practice space is well designed and effective at building knowledge. On the downside, I had not expected for the content to just end without dealing with the modes of the scale that are referenced during the course but not explored or taught. Unfortunately there isn’t a single content lesson (there is a “welcome lesson” that says hello) where you can view what the actual design and formatting of the learning looks like. In music the mode of instruction is really important so I was hoping that I could at least get a sense of that before committing quite a high subscription fee. Waay might be a good app- but it’s not transparent and I’m always suspicious of places that want your money but don’t show you what you are buying ahead of time. Please just add some example lessons at a couple of different levels! ### 1/5 — Great! Until… *2024-12-21, version 3.6.0* I thought I hit the jackpot on this app. That is, until I hit a wall and it said I had to pay $110 to access the rest. I don’t understand what the deal is with everyone wanting to charge for subscriptions or an insane one time cost. Gone are the days of being able to buy an app for a reasonable price. Bsp.: Die beiden Muster aus Ganz- und Halbtonschritten für Dur- und Molltonleiter werden in dieser App einfach als dieselben dargestellt, was grundlegend falsch ist. So bildet man gleich in einer Anfangsübung eine falsche e-Moll-Tonleiter. Ich will mein Geld zurück. Nicht nur deswegen. Die Lehrvideos bilden meist nur den gesprochenen Text ab, Klangbeispiele gibt es keine. The natural minor is very common in popular music, hence our focus. (In a modal relationship like the major and natural minor, the relative major and minor keys do share the same notes.) 2) Many of the videos give sound examples. Examples of major keys, minor keys, notes that sound good together, notes that don't, chord examples, and much more. I found it helpful until I discovered the app cost only covered one lesson, and another lesson would be another $4.99. Content is limited for the price. Edit: to rephrase the criticism, I knew the additional lesson would be an additional fee. My criticism is aimed at the volume of content in the lesson. Not worth $4.99 and I am definitely not purchasing the additional lesson. I’d subscribe if it was a bit more reasonable. ### 2/5 — NOT ACTUALLY FOR BEGINNERS *2024-04-16, version 3.5.0* This app is great but the guy obviously doesn’t remember what it’s like to be a beginner in music theory since there are SO many questions I have that he doesn’t answer and there’s no way to find the answer— He teaches a lesson and then you practice and if you don’t get it too bad you just keep doing the same thing over and over, it doesn’t tell you WHY something’s wrong or how to do it right. I cannot figure out why some majors have flats and sharps in certain places and where they’re supposed to be. If you know a little bit about music theory, this app might work for you but not if you know nothing, like me. Please fix so that when people get many questions wrong in a row it will help them instead of just me continuing to get them wrong because that doesn’t actually do anything. I thought there would be resources or materials for music theory. How wrong I was. The only resources are animated videos, which is a very poor format for reference. Everything else is gamified exercises. It may get better and have more info in later ‘levels’ but I wanted and expected something totally different. When ever I had spare time I would continue with the program. The explanations are very simple to understand and not being able to skip exercises annoyed me at first but it really helps with consistency and retention. ( also the video voice is very soothing ). Normally I hate subscriptions but this app is worth it. The prices are totally reasonable and all in all this app isn’t a cashgrab where you have to pay for every course. I feel like the developers didn’t create this app solely for profit but for the love of music and sharing knowledge, which is uncommon these days. Thank you so much <3 ### 5/5 — Theory Simplified and Exercises Abundant *2025-11-24, version 3.6.3* I tried to teach myself music theory a couple years back through YouTube tutorials and other free online resources, but didn’t get very far. All that to say, I wasn’t very optimistic downloading another app, but thought it’d give it a try. I sure am glad I did! On the Waay app, the theory is explained, and there are computer generated exercises to memorize the various applications of each concept once you learn it. It has helped me increase my rate of learning guitar by tenfold. The trial is free and the relatively low price tag for a monthly subscription can be cancelled anytime, once I get to the place I want to be.
