## What is Wake?

Wake is a sound-activated field recorder. Set a threshold, arm it, and let the sound start the take. Come back to the bird call, the passing train, the voice or the knock you wanted to catch.

For field notes, foley, nature recordings, voice notes and musical ideas. See what you hear as a live spectrum, mark the moments worth keeping, and turn a recording into audio, a captioned video or a timestamped transcript.

CATCH THE SOUND
Set the threshold, trigger EQ, pre-roll, post-roll and hold. The gate listens for the sound you choose and keeps the lead-in and tail. Use the microphone, a connected audio input, a WaveLoop stream, or a compatible Ableton Link Audio channel on your local network.

MARK THE MOMENT
Tap the flag while recording to add a bookmark. Wake suggests a name from what it heard; change it whenever you like. Add bookmarks during review, then hold and drag a marker on the tape to move it. Their names and positions travel into video exports.

FOLLOW THE TAPE
Push through a recording's waterfall with your finger, with capture times beside the sound. Review the whole session or its individual takes. Library cards show duration, take count, what was heard and optional capture location. Play a recording with the screen locked, use headphone controls, and return to where you stopped.

SHARE WHAT YOU CAUGHT
Render SQUARE videos for feeds, VERTICAL for stories, or a STRIP to lay over another scene. Add captions timed to the words, bookmarks, capture details and custom waterfall colours. Export audio as WAV, M4A, FLAC or OGG (Opus), or the transcript as timestamped JSON and plain text. Crop a selection and normalize playback and exports without changing the original audio.

KEEP A RECORD
Takes are written to storage while you record, with 16- or 24-bit capture and recovery of saved audio after an interruption. A tamper-evident audit trail seals the audio and can include optional capture coordinates. Your library syncs through your own iCloud between iPhone and iPad.

LET SOUND CUE THE REST
BROADCAST sends Wake's audio to another Wake on the same local network. Optional TRIGGERS sends MIDI notes and OSC cues for sounds, takes and sealed wakes to another app or your DAW.

Record with the screen locked. Follow the gate, elapsed time and take count on the Lock Screen Live Activity, and stop there without unlocking. Optional QUICK CAPTURE lets supported Action Button and Control Center controls start a session while Wake is in the background.

Sound classification and bookmark naming run on-device. Captions use Apple speech recognition. Recordings stay on your device and in your own iCloud; they are not uploaded to us.

No accounts. No ads. No trackers.

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 1.2 — 2026-10-23

Wake 1.2 brings speaker identification, easier transcripts and more reliable long recordings.

• Identify different speakers on-device, name their voices and include speaker names in transcripts.
• Copy transcript text directly, with word timing, line timing or just the words.
• Sweep across the overview to zoom into a recording.
• Long sessions save in the background with progress. If saving fails, keep the session and try again.
• Open large libraries without waiting for every waveform to load.
• Low Power Mode reduces display and analysis work while keeping capture quality.
• Choose inputs, monitoring, broadcast and triggers from the new Inputs & Outputs drawer.
• Ableton Link follows the session tempo without changing it.
• Give automatic recording titles your own style, and add titles and a glass finish to video strips.
• Includes Wake's new App Clip recorder, with captured takes available in the full app.

### 1.1.3 — 2026-10-05

Catch the sound. Mark the moment. Keep it moving.

• BOOKMARK while you record. Tap the flag to mark a moment; Wake suggests a name from what it heard, on this device. Add bookmarks to saved recordings too. Hold a bookmark on the tape, then drag it to move it. Its name stays with it.
• Bookmarks appear in exported SQUARE, VERTICAL and STRIP videos, with their names and positions in the sound.
• LINK AUDIO input. Choose a channel from Ableton Live or another compatible Link Audio app on your local network. Wake's gate, effects, monitor, tape and bookmarks work on that source. If it disconnects, Wake stays silent and reconnects.
• BROADCAST sends Wake's sound to another Wake on the same network. Choose that stream under INPUT to record it.
• TRIGGERS sends MIDI notes and OSC cues for sounds, takes and sealed wakes. Turn it on in settings when you want Wake to cue another app or your DAW.
• The session shows live at the top of WAKES while you record: its sealed takes, elapsed time and what it heard.
• Library playback continues when you leave Wake. The Lock Screen and headphone controls run it, and each recording remembers where you stopped.
• EXPORT has its own screen for VIDEO, AUDIO and TRANSCRIPT. Export timestamped JSON, plain text, or both. FLAC and OGG (Opus) join WAV and M4A.
• NORM changes playback level immediately and carries that level into exports. Each recording remembers its setting.
• STRIP video is a slice of the vertical waterfall, ready to lay over another image. Choose custom waterfall colours and download a Google Fonts family for captions to use offline.
• THRES and TRIG-EQ keep the same continuous spectrum history when you switch modes. Your selected mode is remembered.
• Fixed an iPad startup crash while preparing recordings from a large iCloud library. Long recordings draw their tape while you listen instead of making you wait.

### 1.1.2 — 2026-09-25

Each recording, in its own space.

• Every recording in WAKES is its own card: its spectrum behind the wave, and under it when it was made, how long it is, how many wakes (and the longest and shortest), the clock it ran across, what it sounded like, where, and its seal.
• The ICLOUD line says what it's doing while it checks — files seen, whether they're all here, what the library weighs in iCloud — and counts down to UP TO DATE instead of sweeping. WAITING says how long nothing has moved.
• No more borders: panels, wells and controls read by tone and space. Finlandica everywhere but the wordmark.
• Nothing pops in or out any more: the captions pane, the session well and the control well are always there, and things land in them. Make the display taller and the captions pane gives it the room.
• In SPLITS the rail's buttons stay put — SELECT relabels them in place — and a tapped wake's facts land in a well under the list instead of pushing the strips down.
• The export dialog says a too-long selection in LENGTH itself, and keeps one NOTE line for what the last export did.
• The library comes back scrolled to where you were, and every IMPORT folder has a line saying what its scan is doing.
• The display's resize grip tracks your finger one to one — and so does the spectrograph's grip inside a wake.
• With QUICK CAPTURE off, the Action Button asks to open Wake and starts recording once it's on screen; the Control Center toggle springs back instead of showing a recording that isn't happening.
• With the microphone off, Wake says MIC OFF and RECORD won't arm. Picking a recording back up can't lose it any more. If something takes the mic mid-session, Wake says so — a red STOPPED tab and a notification with a sound.
• → WALL is gone — the members wall closed.

### 1.1.0 — 2026-09-22

Nothing you catch gets lost.

• Every wake is saved as its own file the moment it's caught, not at STOP. A killed app or a dead battery costs a few seconds at most, and Wake rebuilds the session the next time it opens.
• No length cap: a take that runs thirty minutes carries straight on into the next file, nothing missing.
• 24-bit sessions work the same way — their own files, no size ceiling.
• CAPTIONS on video exports: the words caught in that stretch, each one landing on the sound that starts it.
• The ICLOUD line in the library says what's left to send and fetch.
• Settings → LIBRARY FORMAT turns your 1.0 recordings into per-wake files, checked byte for byte before anything is replaced.
• The threshold view shows the spectrum behind the wave, and SCALE zooms down as well as up.
• If a save ever fails, Wake tells you and keeps every file.
• NORM playback no longer freezes the screen while it renders.
