## What is Wake?

Wake is a sound-activated field recorder. Set a threshold, arm it, and walk
away — it listens continuously and only captures when sound crosses the line,
so you come back to the takes you wanted and nothing in between.

Built for foley, field recording, nature and bird capture, voice notes, and
anywhere you'd rather the recorder wait for the sound than eat your storage
and your afternoon.

• Sound-activated gate — trigger threshold, pre-roll and post-roll, hold, and
a ±dB exit so a take doesn't cut off in a quiet moment.
• Export for socials — one tap renders a take as a share-ready video, and
the TAPE view exports SQUARE for feeds or VERTICAL (9:16) for reels and
stories, the vertical tape carrying each take's capture time,
classification, and location burned in — and, if you like, the words that
were said, each one timed to the sound that starts it. Share a take as a
small, playable M4A that drops straight into any chat; the lossless WAV is a
  long press away.
• Nothing you catch is lost — every take is written to storage as its own file
WHILE it records, not at the end, so a killed app or a dead battery costs a
few seconds at most. No length cap, 16- or 24-bit.
• Trigger EQ — a 12-pole high/low cut that decides what the gate listens to,
drawn live over a spectrum waterfall so you can see a bird call's fingerprint.
• A HUD you operate like a device — drag the display to set threshold and
trigger length; watch the record preview shade before you ever hit record.
• Review it as TAPE — the whole session as a vertical waterfall you push with
your finger, playhead reading a quarter up so you see what's coming, with the
wall-clock time each sound was captured beside it. Or split it into wakes and
  work take by take.
• Keeps recording with the screen locked, and puts a live meter on the Lock
Screen and Dynamic Island — gate-coloured waveform, elapsed time, take count,
and a STOP you can hit without unlocking.
• Every take is sealed — a tamper-evident audit trail hashes the audio and can
stamp where it was captured. Non-destructive: crop and normalize without ever
  altering the sealed recording.
• Live captions + sound classification — classification runs on-device;
  captions use Apple speech recognition.
• Record on your iPhone, review on your iPad — the library syncs through your
own iCloud — and share any recording as a WAV plus its sealed manifest.
Nothing is sent to us unless you post it to the members wall.

## Version history (last 3 releases)

### 1.1.2 — 2026-09-25

Each recording, in its own space.

• Every recording in WAKES is its own card: its spectrum behind the wave, and under it when it was made, how long it is, how many wakes (and the longest and shortest), the clock it ran across, what it sounded like, where, and its seal.
• The ICLOUD line says what it's doing while it checks — files seen, whether they're all here, what the library weighs in iCloud — and counts down to UP TO DATE instead of sweeping. WAITING says how long nothing has moved.
• No more borders: panels, wells and controls read by tone and space. Finlandica everywhere but the wordmark.
• Nothing pops in or out any more: the captions pane, the session well and the control well are always there, and things land in them. Make the display taller and the captions pane gives it the room.
• In SPLITS the rail's buttons stay put — SELECT relabels them in place — and a tapped wake's facts land in a well under the list instead of pushing the strips down.
• The export dialog says a too-long selection in LENGTH itself, and keeps one NOTE line for what the last export did.
• The library comes back scrolled to where you were, and every IMPORT folder has a line saying what its scan is doing.
• The display's resize grip tracks your finger one to one — and so does the spectrograph's grip inside a wake.
• With QUICK CAPTURE off, the Action Button asks to open Wake and starts recording once it's on screen; the Control Center toggle springs back instead of showing a recording that isn't happening.
• With the microphone off, Wake says MIC OFF and RECORD won't arm. Picking a recording back up can't lose it any more. If something takes the mic mid-session, Wake says so — a red STOPPED tab and a notification with a sound.
• → WALL is gone — the members wall closed.

### 1.1.0 — 2026-09-22

Nothing you catch gets lost.

• Every wake is saved as its own file the moment it's caught, not at STOP. A killed app or a dead battery costs a few seconds at most, and Wake rebuilds the session the next time it opens.
• No length cap: a take that runs thirty minutes carries straight on into the next file, nothing missing.
• 24-bit sessions work the same way — their own files, no size ceiling.
• CAPTIONS on video exports: the words caught in that stretch, each one landing on the sound that starts it.
• The ICLOUD line in the library says what's left to send and fetch.
• Settings → LIBRARY FORMAT turns your 1.0 recordings into per-wake files, checked byte for byte before anything is replaced.
• The threshold view shows the spectrum behind the wave, and SCALE zooms down as well as up.
• If a save ever fails, Wake tells you and keeps every file.
• NORM playback no longer freezes the screen while it renders.
