### 1/5 — Company dead

*2013-01-20*

I used this app for a couple years, but as of last Oct., it no longer works. You can't connect to their server, and without a connection, it's useless. THIS APP SHOULD BE REMOVED from the App Store.

I received an email some time ago from a supposed member of the company who tried to sell an "update". A day later I received another email from the actual company stating that the other email was fraudulent, and that the man who sent it was no longer associated with the company. They also said they were out of capital and could no longer make or sell the wristbands. I figured the company was headed to a sure death; but I didn't expect it to just cease to function without any warning.

### 1/5 — Company dead?

*2013-01-11*

Borrowed a friends wristband to give it a try. Pretty sure this company is dead. Their SSL certificate expired in Oct 2012 so the app won't connect to their server. You'll also get the error when registering on their site and the app won't be able to connect to the server. App crashes quite a bit. Tried it last night not knowing it wouldn't be able to upload data and the alarm didn't go off until I switched to the app in the morning. Could be I didn't understand how that worked. Also not sure if this app can work without uploading to the server. There's an offline mode that I though I'd be able to track my sleep wo needing to upload but the next day I couldn't figure out how to get the data to view. Could be because the app keeps crashing or you just need to upload. So if the company goes under, the wristband and app might be useless.

### 1/5 — Save your money and don't buy wristband

*2011-12-30*

Worked for most of three months. Do not trust exclusively so be sure to set a backup alarm. Several nights over the three months could not get software to connect to wristband even though iPad showed wristband was connected by bluetooth to iPad. This would happen maybe once or twice a week but now for the past week I have not been able to correct this issue at all after spending approximately two hours over the week attempting to get software to connect to band despite band being connected to ipad. Besides this issue, wakemate will not login or sync. This is first generation ipad.

Must sleep four hours or more for it to track sleep.

Wrist band tracks your movement (must be on dominate arm to work correctly according to software) and assumes if you moved you woke up. Primative way to track sleep but works somewhat.

### 1/5 — Horrible Customer Service (I feel as though I've been ripped off)

*2011-09-07*

So I purchased a Wakemate. They shipped it to me almost immediately. When I wanted to return it, it took a week to respond to the email about where to return it to. They received my Wakemate return unit nearly two weeks ago, and I still have yet to see the refund for the Wakemate back in my bank account. Repeated emails are responded to positively, but no action is taken, which makes it all the more frustrating.

As for the Wakemate itself, I found the wristband to be distracting, and it actually kept me awake more than helping me sleep. It also didn't register when I was actually awake and when I was asleep, which made the whole system even more suspect.

Do yourself a huge favor and avoid this company entirely. Buy a Zeo or FitBit instead. I can't imagine that the customer service of those two companies would be any worse than this particular company, which I've found to be entirely unprofessional. Those running this company are entirely unresponsive. I've spent more time trying to get my money back than anybody should ever have to spend.

### 1/5 — Quality issues, customer service very disappointing

*2011-08-19*

I've sent back TWO bad units at MY expense and the second one has been gone for a month now!
After 6 emails to customer service I STILL haven't received a single response as to where my replacement unit is!!!!
STAY CLEAR of this product....until they can get quality control in order, take financial responsibility for returning their "defective units" and customer service that is able to provide ANY kind of support.
When it worked it was great, but unfortunately it rarely worked.

### 1/5 — Doesn't work properly on both of our iPhone 4's!

*2011-08-07*

I finally figured out why this app doesn't work properly most of the time. The iPhone 4 cannot be plugged into the charger while running the wakemate app at the same time. It glitches and freezes all areas of my iphone. Restarting my phone doesn't do anything. I have to unplug it from the charger & everything suddenly works perfectly. This is very disappointing, if your battery is too low then you cannot use wakemate that night b/c your phone battery will die. My husband also has an iPhone 4 and is experiencing the exact same problems so we know it is wakemate. I hope this can be corrected. It's useless if your phone isn't fully charged before bed. That's very frustrating because overnight is when i fully charge my iPhone 4.

### 2/5 — Unreliable

*2012-06-29*

It often takes a lot of fiddling to get the wristband recognized by the software.
If I am awake and open another program on the iPad the software goes back to asking me what time I want to wake up even though it has already been setup and is supposed to be tracking my sleep.
It can be hours before I fall asleep but the wristband will report I have fallen asleep in minutes because the are with the wristband hasn't moved much.
I can get up and go to the bathroom in the middle of the night and the wristband will miss it.
If I am sleeping soundly and sleep through the alarm it doesn't appear to give me any extra credit for the time I sleep past my wakeup time.
I will not rely on this device to wake me up if I have to be up by a specific time.
The wristband communicates with the software to get things set up by Bluetooth. Then it disconnects from the Bluetooth. When I wake up it invariably does not have a Bluetooth connection and it tells me to power it off and back on to reestablish the connection so it can download the sleep data. So how is it going to tell the software I should be woken up if it can't communicate with the iPad. When the alarm goes off it is always 20 minutes before the time I set the alarm for.
You can delete tags from the list but the next time you sync them it puts all the tags you have previously deleted back onto the list. And there is no way to tag after the fact if you forget something or things change after you have told it you are going to sleep. Or go in at the end of the day and tag it for how well you performed that day or if you needed a nap to get through the day.

UPDATE 28June2012
As many have suspected, Wakemate sent out an email yesterday saying they had gone belly up. And last night when I tried to use the wristband the software told me the server's certificate had been revoked and would not let me connect. I will give it another try tonight but as of right now I have an expensive wristband that does nothing.

### 2/5 — Good when it works, but some bugs and no customer support

*2012-01-12*

The company had promise: they were late getting the initial product out, but communicated reasonably well at the time.

Then came the power block recall. Customers were promised a replacement. This has never come. When emailed 6 months ago, support said a solution was on the way. However, with subsequent emails, there has been no answer. The blog on their website hasn't been updated in more than 6 months, so I suspect that they are defunct at this point, though still selling product (similar to Ovolab Phlink, for those of you who know them).

As for functionality: there has been a persistent bug between the iPhone passcode and the alarm. Basically, the alarm has prevented me from entering my passcode (since I use a number that overlies the alarm) to get into the phone and turn the alarm off. Support is aware of this. Their solution (this was a year ago) - don't use a passcode on your phone.

It seems that many recent reviews also report poor customer service. I would concur, as none of my emails have been answered, and a lone recent tweet that their back has not had any follow-up. For some pretty smart guys who wanted to start a company, this is a sad statement.

In short, then, I would avoid purchasing this product. For those of us who have it, it does have some functionality, and when it works, it works well. But it is unreliable with poor customer support to back it up.

### 3/5 — Nice when it works

*2012-04-25*

I've had the Wakemate for about a year and learned a lot about my sleep patterns. I had to send the wrist unit back once for a Bluetooth issue. Lately though, I've been getting the notorious "not enough data" error that others have reported. Tried to contact the Developers but have gotten no response, so I'd have to say customer support is a useless. If you don't mind possibly wasting 60 bucks, then give it a shot.

### 3/5 — Needs work but helps sleep

*2011-08-02*

I've only used it a few nights and my sleep, although the same amount of time, has declined in quality. I don't really understand that yet but maybe I'll figure it out.
It would be nice not to have to log in to the iPhone to turn off the alarm since one is a little groggy upon awakening. Since the wristband doesn't vibrate to wake, one has to have a little courtesy to the spouse who is still sleeping, and it makes the adrenaline flow-maybe not great when just waking.
They did fix it so there's a button to go to Wakelytics, which is convenient.
Hoping they will make naps able to be included for those of us who occasionally nap. I've often wondered how that affects the quality of night sleep.
Great idea and heres hoping it keeps improving.

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — When it works.

*2011-10-04*

I couldn't get it to work the first night or two, but, once I got it working, it has done everything advertised. I did also have to stretch out the band some, but I feel it deserves all five stars because I can wake up in the morning without three alarms.

### 5/5 — So far so good

*2011-08-14*

I was somewhat skeptical since I have done the medical sleep study and they found nothing. This tools works well to give you an idea of when you get your best sleep. Make sure to tag your sleep with as much info as possible to get the best information back. For example if I exercised I put an exercise tag, this way you can do trial and error to see what helps you sleep. Don't get it if all you want is the alarm, I actually don't use it much since I am more interested in seeing what I can do during the day to improve my sleep at night. It's been proven that light exercises like walking 30 mins can help you sleep better or doing Yoga. With the Wakemate you can actually see the changes which is really neat. So far it has worked great and I was happy to spend the money.

**Improvements that would be great- I know that the shorter the sleep period the less accurate the sleep data but it would be nice to have the option to add naps, possibly having the ability to have sleep data and nap data be separate so that it does not mess up the wakelytics data.

### 5/5 — Best alternative to skipping work

*2011-08-12*

Great product. I notoriously don't sleep well and I always dread morning regardless of the amount of sleep I get. Wake mate makes waking up feel natural whether it's 5 am or 10 am. I wish it had some kind of white noise function but it works fairly well with white noise pro in the background.

### 5/5 — Love it

*2011-08-09*

I've had mine since the first round of hardware, and though I've had some issues with the wristband twice (both times it was replaced, just took time) the company has always been very responsive. Any times I've not been able to use my wakemate, I've been sleepy and tired all day - waking at the right time is a lot more important than I thought!

### 5/5 — I love this thing

*2011-07-22*

I don't know if it's pseudoscience, but I love all this sleep data! I'd love to see some data on how it correlates with a sleep center medical monitoring system.

And the alarm is awesome- feel less tired when you wake!

Three requests:
1) Nap data- no processing sleep under 4 hours. I'd like it even if it just kept track of time napping, but obviously more sleep data would be sweet.

2) Exercise product- Exermate! And make Wakemate and Exermate correlate together.

3) Make it so we can change tags after setting alarm up- I have to reset just to add tags if I forget.

I liked the original interface best.

### 4/5 — It almost works... Just a couple of quirks

*2011-09-29*

When it works, it REALLY works. A couple of minor things I hope future versions fix:
If for some reason you sleep less than 4 hours, besides having to reboot, it is necessary to sleep or simulate a longer cycle again. I really need to analyze short sleep cycles.
Also, I hope that future versions do not require as many restarts and at least support short sleep periods or alternate sleep cycles.
Also, I miss some features left behind from older versions, like Facebook integration.
Even with the quirks, I don't regret my purchase.

### 4/5 — Interresting

*2011-09-24*

I've had the unit for between 2 and 3 months now. It's worked fairly well overall. Once you log a week or so of data you can log onto these site and get a whole bunch of information on your sleeping patterns, what days of the week you generally sleep best, your most successful fall asleep and wake up times, just a whole bunch of stuff. I do wish I could get this through the app and not have to log onto the site.

I've had it paired with my iPad, and a few times I've had to use it offline, not connected to wifi. It works, but I seem to need to sync the data before I can use tithe next night, so I found myself looking for a wifi connection just to sync. It would be nice not to have to worry about that.

The unit itself is comfortable to wear. I've found recently that I have to charge the unit a bit more often even though it's only been just under 3 months. I'm a little worried that it won't last up to a year, but I'm hopeful. Overall I still suggest this to friends and still use it daily.

### 4/5 — Neat App, Needs Better Tag Reporting

*2011-08-09*

I've been using the WakeMate for a couple of weeks now, and so far I really like what I see.

PROS:
- The standard wristband is comfortable on my wrist and I don't notice it while I sleep. My wrist is 6.5 inches around.
- I do feel better when I wake up in the morning. It's nice not to have the jarring wakeup of my previous alarm clocks.
- The analytics WakeMate provides are interesting, but it's not quite the "sleep study" replacement that I hoped it would be. One thing I've learned is that I ALWAYS wake up around 5 AM, and apparently don't sleep well from 5 to 6 AM regardless of when I went to bed.
- Maybe it's just me, but I find that seeing the analytics in the morning actually helps me stay awake. I turn off the alarm and then the analytics appear. I'm always curious, so I spend a few minutes looking at them. By the time my curiosity is satisfied I'm awake enough not to reset the alarm and go back to sleep.

CONS:
- I've created a ton of tags to track not only my sleep, but also my eating, drinking, and exercise habits. I've been consistently tagging all my sleep sessions, but so far there's no way to run reports based on the tags. My understanding is that WakeMate is working on this, but we'll see.
- WakeMate is only able to provide analytics for sleep sessions longer than four hours. I had hoped it would track my weekend naps too as I'm curious how they affect my sleep at night.

For the $50 I paid, I'm happy with WakeMate and I think it's the best app of its type out there. Before purchasing I read a lot of reviews on similar products, but I haven't tested any of them out myself - WakeMate had the best reviews at the time of my purchase. WakeMate has helped me to understand how the amount of sleep I get, my diet, caffeine, alcohol, exercise, and work-related stress affect how I feel. It's not the "sleep study" alternative that I had hoped for, but for $50 it's a neat app. If WakeMate continues to expand the tagging feature to allow reporting, it'll be a 5+ star app.

### 4/5 — Good product

*2011-08-04*

I love my wakemate and although I tend to fall back asleep when it wakes me up, I do like being able to track my sleep progress. I was actually able to pinpoint a few of my issues with sleep, from environmental factors to health factors, so kudos for that. I miss being able to share my info and was told that with the latest update they were having problems getting it to work and that in the upcoming updates it might have that option. All in all, i love the wakemate and use it every night.

### 4/5 — Weaning off my snooze button habit!

*2011-07-28*

I've clocked 6 nights so far.
Re: previous 1-star review, I'm on iPhone 3G(not-S) - no apparent memory hog issues.
+ It's woken me up a few times before the hard-stop alarm time & I've been pleased to be more able to just get up (or at least stay awake) versus my hit-snooze-for-an-hour habit. So it's sensing & doing something right ;-)
+ syncing to website & checking out the analyses is really cool - good sleep correlations w/: time u go to bed, did u have a couple of beers that nite, how sleep meds affect yr sleep cycles, etc.
+ Great service! The delivery guy left it out for some passerby to steal. They sent a replacement at their expense, no problem.
- both the web site & the app could use an easy design overhaul, starting w/ changing the background from black to white for eye ease and chart comprehension.

Would luv to know more about what & how the sensor senses. Can't be brainwaves on yr wrist, right?

Looking forward to logging more sleep data -> better understanding of how to optimize my sleep.

Worth the money.
