### 2/5 — Was great before the latest update

*2025-11-27, version 6.0.13*

I used to love, love, LOVE this app. The user interface was so easy to use and easy on the eyes, and it was fun to revisit locations of completed journeys. But ever since the latest update, the interface looks and feels so cold. Also the super long challenges used to be split up into sections, so at least you could complete them in parts, feeling a sense of accomplishment along the way. Now with the update, they’re all lumped into one long journey that seems overwhelming to finish. I also can’t revisit the locations of the completed journeys anymore, I can only see the latest stop of the current journey I’m on. Why did you fee the need to “fix” something that wasn’t broken?? I’ll give it another month’s try, but please bring back the old features that made this app enjoyable.

### 3/5 — Appalatian Trail

*2024-10-09, version 5.1.22*

Like these virtual walks for incentives to get out. Only complaint is lack of scenery pics, as not interested in shelter pics.

### 3/5 — Walk the distance app

*2024-03-27, version 5.1.12*

Nice concept but the app continues to record my miles incorrectly. Even after I go in and “report missing miles”, it doesn’t always work.

### 4/5 — Adds fun to walks and hikes.

*2023-03-20, version 5.0.35*

I’ve been an avid hiker for many years never was a step-counter, but when I read an article about Walk The Distance it sounded fun and I decided to give it a try. I just completed the Appalachian Trail and am starting the John Muir Trail today. It’s fun to work toward completing a goal every time you go for a hike, and it adds some motivation to get out there and do it. And every day it tells you how much progress you’ve made. My only reason for giving 4 stars instead of five is that I wanted to go back and find when I started my AT effort and the “history” feature wouldn’t go all the way to the beginning. I highly recommend!

### 5/5 — Pandemic saviour

*2023-01-21, version 5.0.34*

Hiking on the trail (app) when I could not be hiking in person has been my psychological saviour during the pandemic! Thank you!

Now I am walking on the PCT! Motivating to get up at 6am on a dark winter morning to do a run to finish a section!

### 5/5 — Rest motivation

*2022-11-20, version 5.0.34*

So simple and fun too. Thank you!

### 5/5 — Motivating! Fun! Easy to use!

*2022-10-29, version 5.0.33*

So happy I found this app! A great way to virtually experience some adventuresome hikes. The app is easy to use, sync to your exercise/health app, navigate through and has responsive customer service.
Looking forward to watching my progress through the interactive maps!!

### 5/5 — Hidden gem

*2022-10-14, version 5.0.32*

This is a hidden gem of an app . It syncs up brilliantly with watch and sends me notifications when you pass a certain information point. I’ve now bought quite a few of the walks as a bundle so I can choose which ones to activate and work my way through them. Keeps me motivated and if you are like me and need a little nudge to keep walking even round the house this is the app for you.

### 5/5 — Great app. Totally worth installing

*2022-09-10, version 5.0.32*

Fantastic app. I’m really glad I found it while searching for virtual hikes/runs. All of my distance auto uploads from my Apple Heath, which gets its data from my Garmin Connect app. Every day or so, I see a a new notification saying I’ve reached “Xxx shelter” or whatever and I click into the app to see my progress.

The prices on the longer hikes are totally worth it and I didn’t have any issues with paying for them. I reached out to the developer with a couple quick questions and he was super responsive.

If looking for an app to help with a little motivation with a monthly or yearly mileage goal, this is your app.

### 5/5 — Very cool!

*2022-08-30, version 5.0.32*

I love this app! It is cool that you can do these awesome trails any time anywhere. I think there should be more trails, there doesn't feel like a very big variety even if you bought all trails, but that's just my opinion. If the devs see this, please add more trails, free and paid.

### 5/5 — Perfect

*2022-08-09, version 5.0.32*

I’ve only been using this for a short time but I love it! It’s such a motivator and I love getting the notifications when I’ve reached a new marker on my trail. I read all the info and try to take in the entire experience . Price can’t be beat either 😊

### 5/5 — I love it!

*2022-05-26, version 5.0.32*

This is one of my favorite apps! I downloaded it last year and have finished the Appalachian Trail. I love getting alerts, with photos and info, on the shelters/areas I have reached.

I’m now walking the Pacific Crest Trail, and am daily encouraged to keep walking because of this app! Thank you to the creator. You are a star🌟

### 5/5 — Amazing

*2022-05-04, version 5.0.31*

Living near the AT in Virginia I hike it all the time. Sadly life has gotten in the way of my through hike but it’s awesome I can do it virtually!

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — Loved it until the new update

*2025-12-02, version 6.0.13*

I really loved the old interface and found it bright and cheerful and super easy to navigate. The new is super boring looking and would agree with another reviewer that it seems cold. It is not as user friendly as the old. I have a harder time seeing where my friends are at and it seems like I have less access to things in the past. Several Steps in the wrong direction. Please bring back the old.

### 1/5 — New update made the app unusable

*2025-11-22, version 6.0.12*

Once the update occurred I have lost a massive amount of data. Interface completely changed and the app now consistently crashes as it attempts to log any distance. Please fix this.

### 1/5 — I got booted out

*2024-04-15, version 5.1.15*

I was hiking the Appalachian Trail and then it reset. I payed for it but it didn’t let me finish. Was it only good for a certain amount of time? I tried to contact the owner but got no response.

### 1/5 — Doesn’t work

*2022-12-17, version 5.0.34*

Looked like an interesting app . Went to try out multiple different maps and nothing happens. Already deleted it

### 1/5 — Doesn’t work !

*2022-07-23, version 5.0.32*

I just downloaded app. I am using latest iOS on an iPhone 7 Plus. The app will not let me create a password. Adhering to their suggestions (6 letters, capitals & special character etc.) No matter what password I type in, It will not accept and save.

### 1/5 — Let me choose my own password

*2022-07-02, version 5.0.32*

I tried to choose a pass phrase for this account which is actually stronger than a password. The app repeatedly told me to choose a stronger password. Look, if someone wants to steal my account and add steps to my journey: LET THEM! I’ll consider you again when I’m allowed to choose the password I want.

### 1/5 — Either my app isn't working right or I just don't see the hype.

*2022-03-22, version 5.0.24*

I thought that you could actually see the place that you were walking in, like Google earth. Is that not the case???????

### 1/5 — Fitbit access needed

*2021-12-11, version 5.0.4*

Linking to the health app rather than to Fitbit ruins this for me.

### 1/5 — In app purchases

*2021-02-07, version 4.8.56*

The app says it has free walks, but as soon as I opened it the first time it insisted that I enable in-app purchases in my phone settings. Why? My phone settings are exactly how. I want them to prevent mistaken purchases. If it is a paid app, it should be advertised as such.

### 2/5 — Can’t enable notifications

*2026-06-14, version 6.4.1*

Downloaded the app but can’t enable notifications. When trying to turn them on from the app, it creates a pop up indicating I must give permission before enabling. Takes me to iPhone settings, where the app doesn’t display because it hasn’t requested permission for notifications. So I can’t enable. So it won’t request. So I can’t enable…

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — Fun, easy and educational!

*2026-06-06, version 6.4.0*

I’m currently walking my third walk and enjoying it just as much as the others. The walks teach me about new regions. They are inspirational for those of us who love hiking. And they are super fun to do with friends. So find a new walk and hit the trail!

### 5/5 — Walk the Distance

*2026-03-19, version 6.1.9*

An app that lets you take long virtual walks along iconic routes. My wife and I started with the Camino de Santiago and we're making great progress! The interface is well designed, and the routes are full of stops with fun facts and photos. There’s plenty of free content, but the developer truly deserves support, and I’ll be purchasing something soon. 🙂

### 5/5 — Love!

*2026-03-04, version 6.1.5*

Love this app! It helps keep me accountable and motivated. Love the different checkpoints!

### 5/5 — 9 to 11 miles per day

*2026-01-13, version 6.0.18*

I love this app! I typically walk about 9 to 11 miles per day and this app makes it so much more fun. I love the information at each checkpoint—I’ve learned A LOT—and I’m an extremely competitive person so being able to see and pass other people on the maps is really motivating. So far, I’ve completed Central Park, Arches National Park, Barcelona, Rome, National Mall, San Francisco, Paris, London, Beverly Hills, and Yellowstone. I’m currently walking Arlington National Cemetery. I’d LOVE to see a map for Ireland or Scotland added, and maybe Australia! If you’re looking for something to motivate you in your health journey, this is it!

### 5/5 — Such great motivation!

*2025-11-22, version 6.0.12*

Absolutely love the newest update! I’ve been using this app for a while, and it consistently keeps me motivated to walk every day. The checkpoints make it fun and give you something to look forward to. Highly recommend!

### 5/5 — Excellent app!

*2025-03-31, version 5.2.4*

I originally had difficulty accessing content, but the developer very quickly responded with a fix and I’m so happy I gave it a second try. There are tons of hikes around the globe ranging from just a few miles to hundreds of miles long. It’s very motivating when you see your progress along the trail and the landmarks and other facts they include are interesting and keep me engaged. I strongly recommend this app!

### 5/5 — The best walking app I have found

*2024-04-27, version 5.1.15*

I absolutely love this app! I love the information, beautiful pictures and fun facts about waypoints and they help keep me motivated to walk so I can see the next one. It is the only way I’ll ever be able to walk the AT so it’s a fun adventure. I will absolutely be subscribing as soon as I finish all the free walks. I would also love to see the North Country Trail added in the future if possible, but if not I will still subscribe because this app is 100% worth it!

### 5/5 — Great walking motivation app

*2024-01-06, version 5.1.7*

I’ve been looking for this type of app for a while now, after I changed from Fitbit, which has walking challenges on it, to Apple smartwatch which has no challenges on it. I would highly recommend this app if this is the type of exercise challenge that you want, I’ve paid for the full experience and its well worth it, after all we’re can you get motivation like this for 50p a week? Ok my review is done, I’m off for my second walk round London

### 5/5 — Love tracking my miles this way

*2023-08-30, version 5.0.36*

I’ve really enjoyed my virtual walk on the Appalachian Trail. It’s fun to track my miles and put updates on my Facebook page. If I have friends that live near the trail, I tell them that I will be in their neighborhood, which usually makes them smile. Great appWith great behind-the-scenes support. Look forward to continuing on and finishing my AT journey

### 5/5 — LOVE THIS APP

*2023-01-22, version 5.0.34*

I’ve tried other apps where I had to enter my steps each day and found it annoying and hard to keep up with. The minimal cost on this app here to virtually walk a trail is worth every penny. My steps/miles go in automatically from my health app on my phone and smartwatch.
I love that you can have friends join you and follow each other, and even compete to see who can walk to a certain place faster.
