This game requires a constant internet connection to play, which keeps me from playing on long trips or flights, where an internet connection is not the best. I wish I could just pay for the whole game download it one time. It is especially annoying since I know that is how this game is sold on other platforms like PlayStation. As for the game itself, I really enjoy the combination of card play and XCOM like game play. The progression and 40k story is enjoyable as you unlock new classes and characters. I would give it 5 stars if not for what I said above. ### 4/5 — Custom Mode DLC? *2022-12-09, version 1.4.56* There should be a DLC in which you can create your own scenarios in a certain selection of maps. We should be able to use all factions featured in the campaign. I know gamers absolutely love that stuff and spend for it. You guys would make bank! Please consider! ### 3/5 — Go play Mechanicus *2022-09-10, version 1.4.52* Okay, so I had just finished playing Mechanicus, and this caught my eye as a good turn based strategy game to play next. It’s not. The game’s death animation is very extravagant and unnecessary, and the character models aren’t amazing. I HATE the ‘choose your direction’ when you move thing. It doesn’t add any strategy elements, it’s just tedious. The characters move too slow, and some missions will make you go to a certain area to win. The story is horrible, the gameplay is okay. Don’t spend money on this game, but if it’s free *like on mobile*, it’s okay. If you haven’t played Mechanicus however, it is more expensive but it is a Dawn of War quality game. Okay game, not the best. Thank you for listening to my Ted talk. ### 4/5 — New to cell phone games *2022-07-26, version 1.4.52* I’m enjoying the game. I took my time with it and wanted to learn the game before spending money on it but all the best deals expired before I knew what any of it could really do. Other then that it’s been a pleasant experience. Having 30 cards is somewhat difficult to manage because none of it seems to be organized in a way that you can pick what cards you will have when. Might be more fun later on when you have tons of items for every situation. I’m already operating with a handicap trying to play games in Georgia hate crime agenda because all of my technology is sabotaged and I don’t get to communicate with anyone. ### 4/5 — Keeps crashing *2022-01-23, version 1.4.40* The game was good when I use go play it, I then deleted it make some space for my phone but decided to download it again, though now it seems to keep crashing every time I open it. ### 4/5 — Something is wrong *2021-07-01, version 1.4.29* The game was working well and pretty fun to play, however after the last update every time I open the app it gives me an error that says I am not using the most up to date version. It then sends me to the App Store to download the newest version (which I have) and the App Store only gives me the option to open the app, which then gives me the error…. Etc etc etc. ### 3/5 — Meh *2021-01-25, version 1.4.20* I love Warhammer and I love turn based strategy games. However the execution of the Warhammer rules into this mobile game was done poorly in a confusing and convoluted manner. The movement and facing is frustrating and unintuitive. You never really know if you will be able to target the enemy, even if you are in range. The enemy gets to shoot at you no matter where they are, but you have to aim like a castle piece in a chess game (only in straight rows). The turns are bizarre and follow some sort of odd initiative formula that is ill-conceived and inadequately explained. You have cards with weapons on them. The option to move your guys is an actual card and its also a choice on the weapon cards. Whether there is a difference on which one you choose is beyond me. You have the option to equip a weapon during your turn, however you can fire your weapons without equipping them. What actually equipping them does is beyond my comprehension. Sometimes a weapon has ammo, sometimes it seems to have unlimited ammo. The game says you can skip half of your turn for a bonus. The bonus is you get to “go first.” How skipping your turn allows you to go first makes no sense to me. The whole game is a perplexing, befuddled mess and it plainly struggles to explain itself to you in the tutorial. Anyone who plays this game or even spends money on it is either smarter than me and figured it out or just really really loves The Warhammer universe. Plus if it is gonna get this hard, then we should be able to level up our players. But still great game & nice back story ### 4/5 — Good Depth...balance a little off *2020-12-05, version 1.4.19* Like the mix of cards and turn based strategy on this game...graphics are sharp on my iPhone 6 and have had no problems with it loading or playing. Downside is that some of the matches are horribly matched for army point values, especially in the later stages where there are endless waves of reinforcements every other turn. My three marines have taken out five times there value in enemies and they keep piling on...like a pile of ants trashing a scorpion. ### 3/5 — WAY too complicated and feels exclusive *2020-05-22, version 1.4.11* Great graphics, nice strategy, but way too many options when you have to choose not only from a huge arsenal of weapons but how to upgrade each one too?! The plot seems like it would be pretty cool … if I knew what was going on. This is NOT an entry-level storyline! The developers ASSUME you are already fully immersed in this highly detailed universe. The problem has been resolved (resolved itself?) so I changed the review from 1 star to 4 stars. I enjoy this game a lot, am able to do pretty well without paying for any bonuses, but some glitches stop me from giving 5 stars. I was enjoying this game, a bit of a learning curve on how to customize the decks, but fun to do. Now it doesn’t load. Tried uninstalling the game, restarting my device, nothing gets me past the loading screen. ### 4/5 — New update *2020-04-20, version 1.4.9* When I went to play the game it’s said it needed to download some stuff and when it was done it immediately quiet the app and when I tried to play it, now when ever I try to play it the app crashes and won’t let me play. Unfortunately when I try to play PvP with a rank in the 400s I am consistently matched against players with a single digit rank. Their cards are so much more powerful that strategy has little to do with the outcome. I was upset when they released a new character that can only be gained through spending absurd amounts of money in their spending “tournaments.” I guess that turned a lot of people off because I now rarely get matched with opponents within a hundred points of my rank in PvP and now find myself paired against obvious bots which never used to be a thing. Seems like the only humans still playing are the ones who have too much money invested in it to back away. ### 1/5 — Constant crash will not load in after tutorial *2022-01-22, version 1.4.40* I have 4 iPads and several iPhones and this is a 12 pro max. Game loads and updates. As soon as it gets to loading screen the app shuts off. I delete the app and re load and same issue. Loaded on my iPad and can play tutorial but as soon as campaign starts it crashes to desktop. Just shuts off. Will not load. All devices are updated to current patch and app even updated today but noooooo it will not load! ### 1/5 — Forced update deleted all my data (v1.4.21) *2021-04-06, version 1.4.21* I’d been enjoying this game for at least a year (likely much longer), claiming all free-to-play achievements, getting a decent PvP ranking, having acquired several upgraded Legendary-ranking weapons, and maxing out the main character and a couple of others. The forced update to v1.4.21 deleted all my game data, even in the Game Center. EVERYTHING. Over a year of in-game progress lost. I regret ever playing this. ### 1/5 — Normal GamesWorkshop greed.... *2020-04-10, version 1.4.9* This game is like anything Games Workshop is about these days, destroying a good idea with greed. Bad enough they try to charge $30 for a 29 page “book” online, now they toss out a “free” game that you cannot get past the first stages on if you are unwilling to spend money to buy the power ups the game fails to give you so you can play. You cannot play this game and get anywhere with it without spending more money than the game is worth. GW needs to stop trying to rip people off. They should at least be bound by law to tell you that this game is not free and is a waste of time if you want to play a game without constant pressure to spend money on a flawed product. Great idea, failed application. As to the assumption that that somehow multiplayer helps you get over the pay wall and such, well in the few months i had the game i could never connect to multiplayer, once. I tried two or three times every log in and it never worked. So do not slam me with your bs about how it helps. This game also rips you off and the developers do nothing to fix the charge errors. Hey as long they are lining their pockets with your money why should they care? **Developer response:** We're terribly sorry for this issue with the multiplayer. We'll investigate it. ### 1/5 — PvP is broken & developer customer service as well *2020-01-16, version 1.4.7* I downloaded and started playing about 3 weeks ago and as with most of the popular card based strategy games I knew I would have to make in game purchases in order to advance. While this game does have a couple of short PvE campaigns, the most rewards and gameplay center on levelling up and being able to compete in PvP battles. Unfortunately, despite all I have paid to advance in all of the times I have gone into the PvP queue and waited to matched to participate in a battle I have only been matched twice. Not being able to get into PvP has also affected me not being able to do special weekend PvE events since I don’t have enough PvP battles or wins to participate without paying even more for the privilege. Over the past couple weeks I have filed several bug reports and e-mailed the dev several times. All of that got me just a single reply with a suggestion to restart the game, something I had already done several times before even reporting problems. At this point I have just uninstalled the game and recontacted the dev and Apple which acknowledged “app exploitation” had occurred, regarding a refund. Failing that I will have to challenge the charges as being fraudulent from this game with my credit card company! **Developer response:** We're terribly sorry for the issue. We'll investigate the issue and will do our best to help you. ### 2/5 — Deep thoughts from fenris *2022-06-16, version 1.4.48* First off it’s an amazing game with interesting mechanics in the spirit of war hammer. Just like any collectible card game (mtg) they make you pay for the cards you need to advance, late in the 4th stage. You can’t advance or complete in pvp without buying $50-$150 worth of cards n credits so consider that or just play thru till you hit the wall. Still fun. Deathwatch was better all tho all around. ### 2/5 — Game won’t load/connect and why can’t we heal! *2021-06-01, version 1.4.26* the game will not connect to the severs I keep uninstalling and reinstalling the game seriously developers is this payback for me complaining that I can’t heal? Because it’s not far that we can’t heal one bit flipping Xcom is unforgiving but it at least give as a way to heal in a battle because you saying “try a new tactic” is crap if you can’t heal especially with never ending enemy units spawning ### 2/5 — IOS version does not have healing cards *2020-11-28, version 1.4.19* In the years I have been playing this game i have never not heard of anyone having healing cards (healing cry, etc) in the IOS version. This makes the final missions in the necron chapters basically impossible to complete. I don’t know why the IOS version has this problem; other versions have healing cards. ### 2/5 — Too expensive, scales unevenly with mission advancement *2020-02-18, version 1.4.7* No way to progress or win without spending a fair amount of money. While every business is out to make money, I can appreciate that, this game offers no way to progress or earn more credits apart taking on new missions and completing any bonus objectives that you haven’t. I’m at the point in the game where the enemies are so numerous and powerful that I am simply destroyed. I have spent $40, which was mainly for credits used to upgrade my team and a few boosters. I am not going to continue to play a game that requires such an investment of money to stay reasonably relevant for a short time. The game IS FUN and I enjoy it. But the lack of repeat mission playing for any real benefit (yes, you can get forges for a card) but no credit of experience to raise my levels is a gross overlook by the developer. The idea is sound, fun game, looks good and lots of strategy. But the difficulty scaling coupled with the amount of money needed to upgrade units to the next tier, for me, takes away too much from the game to continue playing. Multiplayer never has anyone on. Challenges are super hard/require multiplayer wins to play. Missions can be played but after so many you just won’t be strong enough to do anything and there isn’t a way to get stronger. You could log in every day for 3 months and still not have made any meaningful upgrades. Essentially to continue you have to spend hundreds of dollars to upgrade your people. To put it in perspective, It takes roughly 200k credits to fully upgrade 1 marine. You get a max of 300 credits per day average if you watch 5 min of ads and get the daily login. It will take you 700+ days of daily play to upgrade 1 of your 6 marines regardless of how much extra you play. Great great game, would love to give it more money, but even $50 is meaningless overall in unlocking more gameplay. I really hope the devs make some tweaks. Even a monthly subscription would be fine just like all my other games, I realize you need to make money. Also wish you could restore purchases. Combining the best of Warhammer, Magic the Gathering and chess with PVP, campaign and individual battles in Hunger Games-style arenas. The PVP and Hall of Sorrows modes are endlessly replayable - trying out different decks, squads and strategies. I’ve been playing for months and I’m still learning new things. Tough tradeoffs are everywhere: whether you’re focusing on damage, speed, amor, overwatch, stun, confusion, rage, blaze, indirect fire, or card removal, engaging and scrambling for the power ups or playing cat and mouse from range, concentrating fire on the enemy’s hero, or focusing on taking out his squad first - all are effective strategies. The best solution often depends on the situation, so be prepared to change your strategy on the fly since no battle plan survives contact with the enemy. Somehow they fit all of this complexity in a fast paced, easy to learn mobile game. I only paid $5.99 for one special squad member but I’ve defeated the highest ranked players in PVP - so the paywall isn’t a real barrier. It would be nice to have “Rematch?” button after a PVP game, so you could offer to battle again after an especially good match but that’s my only idea for improvement. The tactical game play is challenging and engrossing. The story is interesting and very WH 40k. The missions do become fairly long as you progress, but your progress is automatically saved. The length of the missions made me feel satisfied when I completed them. All in all, if you’e WH 40k fan looking for a Space Marine fix, I recommend this game. ### 5/5 — My favorite Warhammer mobile game! *2021-09-06, version 1.4.34* Honestly, this is the one game I have been playing the longest on my Iphone. I love this game, the mechanics of the game with the deck of cards and the play space works well. I have never spent a penny on this game and have an amazing deck so don’t listen to those who say you have to spend money in the game, you don’t. You just have to be dedicated and log in often and play. Watch the videos everyday for free coins and replay your missions for more parts. Sell back cards you don’t need and forge for new ones. But they fixed it, so we’re all good now. ### 5/5 — Good Game *2020-11-12, version 1.4.18* Started playing a Space Hulk box set with Terminators and was hooked immediately. Then over the years transitioned to full scale war with Warhammer 40K 25 years ago. A full company of marine, terminators and vehicle miniatures, a tape measure and book to calculate everything from movements of units and vehicles to armor and weapon ratings, buildings, tree and rock props on a pool table for the war zone and a piece of string to establish line of sight for weapon shots. Then Dawn of War hit the PC and brought my Blood Angels chapter of marines into the animation age. Since I can’t drag my PC with me everywhere the Space Wolves Chapter has filled the void. Fun game and tons to do. It is a bit grindy to level up and get cards, but will do for now. I’m still kinda partial to my Blood Angels Chapter sooo.....devs start figuring out how to bring other chapters and races into this game or another new game please. **Developer response:** Huge thanks for your detailed feedback and suggestions! Stays fun far longer than I expect. Many other 40k games have fallen to the side but not this one. Solid dev team. They have put serious effort into keeping the game fun. Say goodbye to your friends. And be prepared to leave some people behind. Gameplay and animation is flawless. Card system is unique and fun. Lore and story are perfect. Crafting is good, loot is balanced. To get overwatch, equip a rifle and hit the turn button. One Marine can hold out a long time. Which might be jat the time you need. Flanking is possible. But. The odds are stacked against you getting that treasure box. That's what crafting is for, though. All around a challenging but surprisingly addictive strategy game. I had fun.
