## What is Wasatch Backcountry Skiing Map?

The Wasatch Backcountry Skiing Map is the iOS version of the popular paper map and website (visit WBSkiing.com). As with the other platforms, the iOS map includes an index to more than 1,000 backcountry locations in Utah's Central Wasatch mountains (i.e., the two Cottonwood Canyons and some surrounding areas). Visit https://wbskiing.com/coverage to see the terrain covered by this map. This is the must-have app for Utah hikers and backcountry travelers. You do not need cell service to use the map and its navigation features.

Completely redesigned for modern iOS, the app now features a faster, cleaner interface that's easier to use on both iPhone and iPad. Using your device's GPS, the map displays your current location on a high-resolution topo map with contour lines and slope shading built from high-resolution LIDAR data, dramatically increasing the detail of the terrain and improving the accuracy of the 30-degree slope shading.

With a single tap, you can access information on more than 200 of the backcountry locations on the Wasatch Backcountry Skiing Guide website including photographs, skiing difficulty, skinning distance, vertical climb, parking considerations, and more. (This information can be accessed without the app by visiting https://wbsguide.com. It's a free website I publish.)

IMPORTANT: When navigating, the "destination arrow" points directly to the destination without regard to hazards such as avalanche paths, cliffs, and rock fall. It is your responsibility to travel in the backcountry safely.

### 2/5 — Not the full Wasatch front

*2026-02-20, version 3.5.0*

Limited map to big cottonwood canyon areas… it acted like it was the Wasatch front so I thought it would include skyline , and other backcountry areas…. It doesn’t seem to be interactive either to show current conditions

### 5/5 — Essential tool for any Wasatch backcountry rider

*2025-01-16, version 3.5.0*

If you ride down snow in the backcountry in the Wasatch, this tool is a must.

### 4/5 — I use it constantly

*2024-12-29, version 3.5.0*

Great UI, simple, I think the shading for avalanche areas is a bit permissive though - just because it’s not shaded does not mean you are safe.
Worth the purchase.

### 4/5 — Best Wasatch BC map, needs new contour detail map and a couple other updates.

*2024-12-18, version 3.5.0*

I love how clear and easy this map is to use. I can easily take a screenshot of the map and then mark it up to send to my skiing partners. I bought the new paper map and really appreciate the higher resolution of the contour data and I wish this app had that detail. Search works well for finding locations. The iPad version doesn’t fill the entire display, not a huge deal but would be a nice fix to give me more map on my display. I kind of like the old school aesthetic of the app but it would be nice if it had some functional updates.

### 3/5 — Nothing on the Midway side

*2024-01-29, version 3.5.0*

No data toward Midway/Heber

### 1/5 — No idea what this app does

*2024-01-20, version 3.5.0*

I can’t figure out what the purpose of this app is. It doesn’t show any BC routes and there are no terrain overlays so it’s useless unless you already know what you’re looking for. If it’s meant for navigation and route planning there are way better apps. I cannot recommend this app at all.

### 5/5 — Awesome resource!

*2024-01-14, version 3.5.0*

Easy to use and a great resource for local skiers.

### 5/5 — A Wasatch essential

*2023-02-22, version 3.5.0*

Super happy with this app, and we’ll worth the price. GPS location even when out of service is accurate, and the map is easy to navigate. Elevation is also accurate enough. As others have mentioned, it would be nice to be able to access (offline) info for a specific route that you’re doing that day. It would also be interesting to see an overlay of the route you took (or are supposed to take) for certain routes, although the argument could be made that this takes the learning out of route finding and navigation (fair). All in all, I love it! The extra features would be icing on the cake. I appreciate the work that went into this!

### 1/5 — Just get a good topo app like GAIA

*2023-02-12, version 3.5.0*

I thought this app would show specific routes and give terrain ratings for the the approach difficulty and the descent exposure. From what I can tell it has none of those things.

GAIA has basically all the information this app has, but the map layers and global topography that come with GAIA are far more extensive and more helpful.

The best thing about the Wasatch backcountry app is that it shows local names for areas so you can converse with other people about a route without necessarily looking at it on the map. Not sure that’s worth the money.

### 5/5 — Fantastic Tool

*2022-11-27, version 3.5.0*

Worth every fraction of a cent. This app is an invaluable resource in the backcountry.

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 5.0.0 — 2026-07-10

Everything you love about Wasatch Backcountry Skiing Map, now dramatically better. Version 5.0.0 is a ground-up redesign built for modern iOS: a sharper, more detailed map, faster and more reliable navigation, smarter search, and a cleaner waypoint experience that makes marking and finding spots effortless. Every screen has been rebuilt to be more responsive and intuitive, with enhanced iPad support that takes full advantage of the bigger display.

The contour lines and slope shading in version 5.0.0 are based on high-resolution LIDAR data, increasing the detail of the contour lines and relief shading dramatically. Improved accuracy of the "30-degree slope shading" makes understanding terrain easier than ever.

Version 5.0.0 also added more than 50 waypoint names and improves the location data on hundreds of waypoints.

### 3.5.0 — 2017-12-11

This app has been updated by Apple to display the Apple Watch app icon.

Version 3.5.0 is now linked to the Wasatch Backcountry Skiing Guide. After selecting any of the hundreds of linked-locations in the app and tapping on the "Tap here for more ..." box, photographs and detailed information about the location such as skiing difficulty, skinning distance, vertical climb, altitude, aspect, and slope angle will be displayed in Safari (see screenshot). You can tap on the "WBSkiing" text in the top-left corner of Safari to return to the app. Version 3.5.0 also has a new base-map with dozens of additions and improvements. As always, it's a free upgrade.

### 3.0.2 — 2017-10-25

Improved ~25 items in the list of names.

### 3.0.1 — 2017-01-10

Improved app stability (aka fixed a few bugs).

### 3.0.0 — 2016-11-17

New shading was added to show ski area boundaries, the red slope-shading (that shows where the slope is steeper than 30 degrees) is now darker, the accuracy of the GPS was improved, dozens of minor changes were made to improve the location names, several usability improvements were made (e.g., the small compass is now always displayed on the map), and a bug on iPads was fixed (where swiping left-to-right could display a blank window).
