## What is Wattmargin?

Wattmargin turns a list of appliances and a backup-power source into a practical, private outage plan. Build a load library, record startup demand and daily use, map household circuits, compare operating profiles, and export a field-ready report without creating an account.

LIVE SCENARIO BENCH
• Compare your current plan, every catalogued load, must-run plus rotating loads, and must-run loads only
• Model reduced source output for heat, altitude, aging, or manufacturer-rated derating
• Hold back a fuel or stored-energy reserve instead of planning to empty
• See running demand, worst startup event, daily energy, estimated endurance, and remaining headroom update immediately
• Identify optional and rotating loads that recover the most energy or runtime first

LOAD AND SOURCE LIBRARY
• Record continuous and surge output for a battery station, portable generator, or vehicle inverter
• For stored-energy sources, enter usable watt-hours and conversion efficiency
• For generators, enter a manufacturer runtime point and rated load
• Record each appliance's running watts, startup watts, daily hours, duty cycle, priority, room, and notes
• Include or exclude equipment without deleting its record

CIRCUIT DIRECTORY
• Keep room-side breaker labels, outlets, fixtures, and notes together
• Associate saved loads with known circuits
• Build the directory using ordinary switches or plug-in testers without opening a panel

OUTAGE CHECKLIST AND NOTES
• Track preparation and shutdown checks in one place
• Keep household instructions and operating notes with the plan
• Restore the built-in sample plan at any time

SHAREABLE PDF
• Export the selected load plan, scenario comparison, endurance estimate, household notes, and circuit directory
• Keep planning assumptions visible for a household member or qualified electrician

OFFLINE OUTAGE ATLAS
• Browse 16 bundled visual reference cards with no connection required
• Review portable-generator carbon-monoxide and backfeed warnings
• Open the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission reference when you choose

PRIVATE BY DESIGN
Wattmargin has no account, ads, analytics, or developer-operated cloud service. Your plan is stored on your device. The only network action is an optional link you can open to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission website.

IMPORTANT SAFETY BOUNDARY
Wattmargin is a planning notebook, not an installation guide or a substitute for manufacturer instructions, electrical codes, permits, or a qualified professional. Never run a portable generator inside a home, garage, basement, shed, porch, or carport. Keep it outdoors at least 20 feet from the home with exhaust directed away. Never backfeed home wiring through a wall outlet. Permanent wiring and transfer equipment require qualified installation.

## Version history (last 2 releases)

### 1.2 — 2026-08-20

Wattmargin 1.2 replaces the former static scenario example with a live outage-planning workbench driven by your saved source and loads.

• Compare four operating profiles with current plan values
• Model source derating and fuel or energy reserves
• See continuous, surge, energy, and endurance margins update live
• Rank load-shedding options while protecting must-run equipment
• Export the complete scenario comparison in the plan PDF
• Added CPSC-aligned generator placement, carbon-monoxide, and backfeed guidance
• Repaired all 16 bundled offline atlas cards
• Added deterministic release QA across the Scenario, Loads, Circuits, and Guide screens
• Refined the icon and accessibility behavior for a clearer release

### 1.0 — 2026-07-21
