## What is Waverley XL?

Please note: Waverley XL has been designed as an AUv3 (Audio Unit v3) instrument and does not run as a standalone app. It needs to be used inside an AUv3 compatible host such as Apple’s GarageBand or AUM shown in the screenshots.

What is Waverley XL?

Waverley XL is a sample-based instrument, or “ROMPLER”. It is not a synthesiser that allows you to create your own instruments. Instead, the instruments have already been created. You also have some additional sound-shaping options accessible via 10 parameters.

Where did the sounds come from?

The instruments have been created using my favourite virtual-analog hardware synthesiser with additional processing using its own effects engine. I designed all the patches from scratch, specifically for Waverley XL.

Is this the same as MU Waverley in moodunits?

Not exactly. Waverley XL uses similar sampling technology under the hood but has been developed in response to requests and suggestions from moodunits customers. The main difference is really the instruments themselves. Instruments for moodunits are designed to take up as little space and memory as possible and be relatively light on CPU. Waverley XL is “Xtra Large” in both name and nature! While this means Waverley XL takes up considerably more storage space, it also means that instruments can be more complex, evolving and also more interesting to play.

A big design goal for XL was that the playing experience should “feel” and sound more like real instruments when played with a velocity sensitive keyboard and sustain pedal.

Instruments

There are currently 50 different instruments, each with 4 sets of parameter presets giving 200 patches in total. Instruments are categorised as “sustained”, “keyed”, “lead” or “departures” and this is shown in the central display panel. Sustained instruments will sustain until you release a key, whereas keyed instruments have a natural, more piano-like decay. Lead sounds are monophonic with a little legato glide and have less dynamic range. Departures are no holds barred sound design extravaganzas designed to take you on an atmospheric sonic journey!

There are also a selection of 50 “components” taken from 25 of the main instruments for your own sound design experiments (*)

Parameters

Waverley XL has ten parameters that can be used for additional sound-shaping. The AMP envelope and FILTER in particular can be used to significantly change the character of an instrument. If you’re familiar with traditional synthesisers, these parameters should be immediately recognisable.

Technical specifications

• 50 individual high quality multi-sampled instruments designed specifically for Waverley XL
• 50 additional "components" from the main instruments for sound design experiments (*)
• 16 note polyphony (except lead sounds which are monophonic)
• Note range C0 - C6 (Apple standard C3 = middle C)
• Velocity-sensitive timbre changes with 30dB dynamic range (15dB for lead sounds)
• Pitch bend range +/- two semitones (a whole note)
• Modulation wheel is mapped to filter cut-off (note this will override filter envelope and vice versa)
• Lead sounds have a fixed 100ms glide accessible via legato playing

(*) Please note to mix and match components, you need to create multiple instances of Waverley XL in your AU host. This is described in more detail in the user guide accessible from the main Waverley XL app.

*** Please note that this app is now in maintenance / bug fixes only mode ***

### 5/5 — Love it!

Any chance you can flip this as an instrument to load and play user samples?

### 5/5 — Great rompler for electronic music

*2022-11-18, version 1.2.0*

It does have a ton of rich sounds and you can tweak amp, pitch, filter and lfo. standaloneで動作するよう作られていません。AUv3プラグインとしてGarageBand などのホスト上でのみ動作します。

### 1/5 — User guide しか出てこない

*2022-09-25, version 1.2.0*

これはシンセアプリでではないのですか？　そうでないなら、ブックの方だけにこのアプリを紹介しましょう！

### 5/5 — Gorgeous

*2021-06-04, version 1.2.0*

Wonderful sounding instruments and surprisingly versatile; as it is more like a rompler than a synth, I wasn't expecting so much control. Just enough control, in fact. I'm not an expert sound designer and am baffled by synths with dozens of knobs, so Waverley's ability to make lush pads with a few adjustments to excellent presets is very welcome. I'd have saved a fortune if I'd discovered this a year ago.

### 5/5 — Superb

*2021-05-28, version 1.2.0*

There’s a problem with this instrument- all the presets are just too damn good! Normally I flick through my new AUV’s and select about twenty odd presets that stand out and use those but I can’t do that with XL as every one is superb and that’s where the effort has gone into this app. I’d happily create an entire track just using this app, which is something I can’t say for all my gear.

### 5/5 — Another Home Run!

*2021-04-20*

If you know and love Rob’s other apps, you’ll love this! Great go-to sounds that are easy to find and quickly dial in the just right variation if you need it. Not lots of menu diving here, just a straight forward interface with the basics right at your fingertips. Great sounds that fit nicely in the mix.

### 5/5 — Great app

*2021-04-19*

Sounds great thx

### 3/5 — It really doesn’t do all that much.

*2021-04-17*

There’s not really a lot there to do much with. The modulation ranges seem tame. The instruments, well there there but not very much musical dynamics. The ‘dial’ an instrument (or left/right arrows) seem a little...mundane. I guess the ID700 spoiled me (it’s on sale for a couple of bucks more.

**Developer response:** Really sorry to hear you're clearly disappointed with Waverley XL. For anyone else reading this, please do take the time to read the App Store description, which mentions that this app (unlike ID700) is a sample-based instrument, not a synthesiser, so has limitations in many regards. Also, the UI is literally what you see in the screenshots. There are now several YT demos (including one pre-release) which should give you an idea of how the instruments sound. I only design sounds that I like personally, in the hope others might like them too, but we all have different tastes. The demos will give you a very good idea of the overall character of the Waverley XL instruments, including their dynamic response (see technical specifications in App Store description). It's not ideal, but it's the closest we have to "try before you buy".
