## What is Wayward GPS?

Wayward GPS is a free GPS map for the backcountry — one map that shows what the land is doing, who owns it, and what the sky is doing, so you can plan your own way out there.

THE MAP
• High-resolution terrain — some of the sharpest elevation data published, rendered in 3D with peaks that look like peaks
• Private land ownership at the parcel line, with owner names where records provide them
• Corner-crossing and landlocked-public-land layers to help you see where public meets public
• GMU boundaries, wilderness areas, roadless areas, and USFS/BLM roads
• Offline maps state by state — trails, parcels, lakes, roads — downloaded to your phone before you lose signal

FISHING
• Wetfoot Stream Access — stream segments of interest to anglers, drawn as robin's-egg "trout highways" (1 CFS and up), with flow data. Coverage varies, access rules vary, and records can be wrong — confirm before you go.
• Tap any river for its story, plus flow and water temperature from USGS gauges when available
• Stocking records where the state wildlife agency reported stocking in the last two weeks, with species counts
• Whitewater and float runs with class ratings, put-ins, and take-outs

TRAILS & RIDING
• Thousands of trails with difficulty ratings and honest two-sentence writeups drawn largely from community data
• Hike/Run and Bike modes with curated bikepacking routes
• Record your tracks, then share them as clean stat cards — distance, vertical, difficulty
• Plan routes, drop pins, navigate to anything

WEATHER
• NEXRAD radar — a composite regional view, or tap any radar dome for super-res detail
• Lightning strikes that fade over ten minutes, storm cells with hail and rotation data, when the data is available
• See active wildfires with perimeters and the firefighting aircraft working them
• Wind flow animation, forecasts, and near-surface smoke

HUNTING
• GMUs, ownership, walk-in access, and terrain built for glassing country in 3D

SKIING
• Winter mode with terrain relief tuned for reading lines

All of it free. No subscription, no paywall, no feature gates. Coverage is state by state and still growing.

Information, not protection. Wayward GPS shows you data from public and community sources that can be wrong, coarse, or out of date — it is a planning tool, not a safety device, a warning system, or a substitute for official sources, your own eyes, and your own judgment. Alerts and forecasts may be delayed, incomplete, or absent, especially with no signal. In an emergency, call 911 or use your device's SOS.

We're now Wayward GPS — same app, same team, new name. Your maps, tracks, pins, and downloads are exactly where you left them.

• Whole trails: a long trail is one record with its sections, each with its own elevation profile, a reverse-direction button, and Go to.
• One elevation profile everywhere, drawn from our own terrain data.
• GuideBook rebuilt: one card format, trails and your own tracks by distance, tap a track to fly to it and share it.
• Segment times are honest: elapsed, moving, and your standing come from one clock and one leaderboard pool.
• Share cards carry the terrain, points of interest, and names.
• Rangefinder (Hunt and Ski) locked to the tip of your arrow.
• Faster, lighter map: streets and trails load promptly in town, and the map heals itself instead of going blank.
• Trail guides on named trails nationwide; campgrounds with write-ups and reservation links.
• Sharing in one chooser: Wayward link, GPX, KML, coordinates, Google pin.

1.9 — the map reads like paper.

Trail names now flow along their trails — placed once, steady as print, appearing from zoom 12 and filling in as you lean closer. Behind them, a statewide data pass healed hundreds of broken and doubled trail lines.

• Small communities are back on the map — nearly 18,000 of them nationwide, from Abiquiu to the smallest crossroads.
• Rivers, creeks, and lakes appear earlier and read cleaner; seasonal streams wait their turn so the map stays calm.
• Roads lead with their route numbers — US 84 before its ceremonial name.
• Motor Vehicle Use Map routes arrive after the road network, with seasonal closures marked and details one tap away.
• Night mode polish: readable labels, luminous water, white tools, and a zoom + coordinates readout on every mode — handy for telling us exactly where something looks wrong.

### 1.8 — 2026-08-25

1.8 — the trail names release.

Every trail label was rebuilt: bold, legible type printed along the trail like a paper map, backed by a statewide data cleanup so each trail is one clean line with one clear name.

• NEW — Motor Vehicle Use Map (MVUM): official motorized routes with seasonal closures marked right on the map (closed routes grey out with a stop sign). Tap any route for vehicle classes and seasons — including honest write-ups for the famous ones like Engineer Pass, Imogene, and Black Bear.
• Search that shows you: search a trail or off-road route, tap the result, and the whole line lights up and frames itself on the map.
• Night mode you can read: labels turn near-white after dark, and the map returns to daylight on its own at dawn.
• Trail difficulty at a glance: trail lines colored by difficulty everywhere.
• Hunt mode: E-PLUS unit-wide properties clearly bordered and labeled; private-land detail arrives a zoom earlier.
• Fresh, de-duplicated data: the latest community trails plus Forest Service, Park Service, and BLM routes, with official state trail systems beginning to fold in.

### 1.7 — 2026-08-15

A big one. Thanks for the field reports — keep them coming.

• Trail directions, rebuilt: search a destination, pick Trail or Straight line, and Generate. Full route cards with elevation profiles, labeled trail forks, and estimated hiking, jogging, and biking times.
• Live navigation: a clean white bar up top with miles left, time to go, and a green/yellow on-route indicator.
• Share routes and tracks as GPX or KML files - AirDrop them to any GPS app, even with no service. Received files import as routes on your map.
• Training: a weekly calendar of your runs, rides, and hikes - miles, vert, calories, and time in four effort zones. Shareable.
• My Content: tune which pins, tracks, and routes appear in each mode - Hike/Run, Bike, Climb, Hunt, Fish, Ski - with time windows.
• Twenty-three more states now carry the full map: colored trails, blue rivers and lakes, coastal water, contours, and offline packs.
• River runs now follow the actual river channel, with live flow readings.
• Offline maps: download in one tap, share whole states by AirDrop, and everything works in airplane mode.

Frightful 1.6

Three new states. Washington, Montana, and Minnesota join at full depth: terrain with land ownership, contour lines, trails with turn-by-turn navigation, hunting units, climbing, and offline packs — twelve states and counting.

• Campgrounds come alive: tap any of 19,000+ for sites, fees, reservations, RV hookups, and a booking link.
• Ski, finished: every operating resort is tappable with real logos, day-ticket prices, pass badges, snow history, webcams, and a shareable card.
• Trail navigation now works in all twelve states, and river trips with live flows cover 1,700 runs across ten.
• Glaciers render as glaciers — Rainier, Glacier National Park, and the Winds read as ice, not shadow.
• Firefighting aircraft on the weather map, nationwide, with radar that follows you across state lines.
• A calmer map: names arrive as you zoom, what you tap is what you get, and the whole interface sits on quiet rounded panels.

Plus snow mode for the flat north, storm tracks drawn hairline-thin, and a hundred smaller acts of polish.
