## What is We Boat?

Pass your boating licence — content checked against the official texts

We Boat prepares seven European licences: the French coastal and inland permits, the Belgian restricted and general brevets, the Dutch Klein Vaarbewijs 1 and 2, and the German Sportbootführerschein See. Up to 487 lesson sheets and reference plates depending on your licence, animations, over 2,000 questions, and mock exams scored the way yours really is. All of it offline, with no account.

CHECKED CONTENT, AND SOURCED
Every rule points to the text it rests on — COLREG, CEVNI, Division 240 (2024 ed.), the Belgian royal decree of 1981, RPNE, BPR, SRW, SRE, SRKGT, SeeSchStrO. You don't memorise a claim: you know where it comes from. Audited article by article against those texts.

EVERY EXAM HAS ITS OWN SCORING
That is what separates a useful mock exam from a plain quiz.
• France, coastal and inland — 40 questions, five mistakes allowed, no eliminating subject (decree of 28 September 2007)
• Belgium, restricted and general — three parts, at least 50 % per part and 60 % overall
• Netherlands, Klein Vaarbewijs 1 — 40 questions, 80 points, 70 % pass mark
• Netherlands, Klein Vaarbewijs 2 — 27 questions, 50 points, 90 minutes, pass mark 35 (the CBR's own toetsmatrijs)
• Germany, Sportbootführerschein See — three independent parts: fail one, fail the exam

NEW — THE KLEIN VAARBEWIJS 2
The second Dutch certificate, in full: ruim water (SRW, SRE, SRKGT), navigation, and the four chart-plotting exercises worth 12 of the 50 marks. 266 topics, 23 chapters — and every topic names the area its rule applies to, because the SRW departs from the sea rules.

THE SYLLABUS
20 universal chapters, plus your licence's own — 38 topics in Belgium, 61 in the Netherlands (+57 for KVB2), 36 in Germany:
• Navigation lights: up to 72 configurations depending on the licence, each flashing its real character, seen from 4 angles and drawn on its own vessel's silhouette
• IALA-A buoyage by day AND by night: at night every mark beats its light's real character
• Inland signs: from 91 to 111 panels depending on the licence
• Steering and give-way rules (COLREG), with the national departures
• Sound, fog and distress signals · VHF (MAYDAY, PAN-PAN, SÉCURITÉ)
• Safety and required equipment (Division 240)
• Charts · Compass and bearings · Tides · Currents
• Marine weather (Beaufort, Douglas) · Knots · Manoeuvres
• Engine and pre-departure checks · Pollution (MARPOL)
• The 40 flags of the International Code of Signals
• Maritime glossary: 269 terms explained
• Tips and the exam's classic traps

UNDERSTAND, NOT JUST REMEMBER
The animations show what a still diagram cannot: give-way, crossing, the real rhythm of lights, buoyage by day and night, tides, knots, manoeuvres.

PRACTISE
Over 2,000 questions: never the same wording twice. Including 302 written by hand in the style of each exam, and the 284 official German ones.
• Quizzes by subject
• Recognition of lights, signs and day shapes
• Field photos: real signs and marks, not just pictograms
• 18 practical scenarios · Calculations: compass, rule of twelfths
• An explanation after every answer
• Targeted review of your mistakes (Pro)

YOUR COACH
Enter your exam date: countdown, weakest subject first, reminders. And a question a day to keep the rhythm.

WORKS EVERYWHERE
• 100 % offline — no connection needed to study
• No account; your results stay on your device
• The free version is ad-funded; Pro removes them

WE BOAT PRO
All the animations, unlimited mock exams, detailed statistics, targeted review of your mistakes, no ads. One-time purchase of €9.99 — no subscription.

We Boat does not replace official training: it complements it, so you can revise anywhere, at your own pace. Fair winds!

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 1.2.8 — 2026-09-07

The glossary finally explains. All 296 marine terms now open on a detailed sheet, and 247 of them
are illustrated: boat anatomy, rigging, sail, points of sail, rope.

The knots are real rope photographed step by step — bowline, figure of eight, reef, sheet bend.

A complete new fire chapter: classes A, B, C, D and F, what each one demands, what makes it worse,
and a table that shows at a glance which agent works and which is forbidden.

Spain and Italy join the app: PER and PNB, patente entro 12 miglia and senza limiti, with their
official marking schemes.

### 1.2.7 — 2026-08-28

Two new countries: Spain (PER and PNB) and Italy (patente nautica), each with the exam rules its own State publishes. And no more English left in the German and Dutch modules.

Spain — Patrón de Embarcaciones de Recreo and Patrón para Navegación Básica

• Both licences, with the marking scheme of Royal Decree 875/2014: PER 45 questions in 90 minutes, pass at 32; PNB 27 questions in 45 minutes, pass at 17.
• The three per-subject caps the decree sets are applied: 5 errors in the collision regulations, 2 in buoyage, 2 in chart work. Pass the total and fail a cap, and you fail — as in the real exam.
• 180 questions written for these two licences, with four options each, because that is the form the decree prescribes.
• A Mediterranean practice chart, gated to Spain: a PER candidate no longer plots on a Dutch estuary.

Italy — patente nautica, entro 12 miglia and senza limiti

• 1 351 official quesiti from the State catalogue, reproduced unchanged, each carrying its own number so you can trace it back.
• The exam matrix comes from the decree itself: 20 questions spread over 8 subjects, plus the five chart questions that open the exam.
• Those five are answered by typing your figure — a course, a distance — because the decree asks for a single answer, not a choice of four.
• Sail is not covered: this app prepares the engine-only licence.

Everywhere

• Your country is now pre-filled from your device, with the licences it covers listed before you confirm.
• Changing the language mid-onboarding no longer loses what you had entered.

Fixes

• The German and Dutch modules were serving English text to Dutch, German, Spanish, Italian and Arabic readers — around 1 170 lines, now translated.
• The exam result screen showed German wording under an Italian exam.

### 1.2.6 — 2026-08-25

Every navigation light redrawn: each vessel now carries its real silhouette, and the lights sit where the rules put them. Plus a new Dutch licence — the Klein Vaarbewijs 2.

Klein Vaarbewijs 2 — the second Dutch certificate

• A new licence to choose, alongside Klein Vaarbewijs 1 (renamed so the two can no longer be confused). KVB2 covers all of KVB1 and adds its own two parts: 266 topics, 23 chapters.
• Part E — ruim water: the SRW, SRE and SRKGT regulations, and the BPR on wide waters. Every topic names the area its rule applies to, because the SRW departs from the sea rules.
• Part F — navigation: the Dutch publications, the INT-1 legend, IALA-A against SIGNI, LAT datum and tides, leeway, GPS and its limits.
• Chart plotting: the four kaartpassen, worth 12 of the 50 marks, are now drawn in EVERY mock exam.
• Mock exam in the CBR's own format: 27 questions, 50 marks, 90 minutes, pass mark 35.

Navigation lights and day shapes, completely redrawn

• Every vessel now carries its real silhouette, and the lights sit where the rules put them: red over green at the masthead, sidelights on the hull, anchor light forward.
• New day view: every shape is drawn in the place of the light it replaces. The cone of a sailing vessel under power is shown in profile, in the fore part.
• Stacked lights no longer overlap, and the three inland tankers finally read the same way.
• Eleven ranges and sectors corrected against the text of the rules.

Buoyage: the night signal

• A day / night selector on every mark. At night the buoy fades and its light beats its real character: 3 flashes east, 9 west, 6 plus a long flash south, continuous north.
• A compass rose with a red north on the cardinal marks and on the placement exercises: "pass to the east" finally has its reference.
• Current arrows are now wavy, so they can no longer be mistaken for the channel axis.

Fixes

• A Klein Vaarbewijs 1 question marked as correct, in six languages out of seven, the answer the exam counts as wrong: Dutch names a tack by the boom's side, English by the wind's side.
• Inland rules no longer announce themselves as Dutch — CEVNI applies in Belgium too.
• Around a hundred answer options shortened: the right answer is no longer the longest one.
• Lighter home screen.

### 1.2.5 — 2026-08-19

Thank you to the user who reported an error in the head-on view: a vessel approaching you shows its starboard side on your left. Green and red were the wrong way round in that view. It is fixed, and an automated check now prevents it from coming back.

NEW — Sportbootführerschein See module
284 official questions from the German catalogue, reproduced word for word, with their figures. 36 SeeSchStrO topics, the Anlage I signs, and the mock exam with its three independent parts.

NEW — French inland licence, and both Belgian brevets
The restricted and general brevets now each have their own mock exam, with the per-part thresholds of the Belgian decree.

EXAM SCORING CORRECTED
The French coastal mock exam now draws 40 questions, as the decree in force requires — it drew 30. Eliminatory subjects have been removed: the decree provides for none.

ALSO
• You pick your country on first launch, and the exam type when you sit it
• German and Dutch signs have been redrawn
• Changing country no longer requires restarting the app
