## What is Weekend NZ?

Stop scrolling, start going. Weekend NZ plans your Auckland weekend in seconds — real places, real budgets, real weather.

HOW IT WORKS
Tell it who's coming and what you've got: budget, adults and kids, by car, transit or on foot, how far you want to go. Type it in plain words — "saturday, two adults, one kid, $100, no car" — and it understands on your device, no account needed. One tap builds a ready-to-go itinerary with drive and transit times taken from Apple Maps; where a leg cannot be routed it is labelled as an estimate.

PLANS THAT FIT REAL LIFE
• Hard budget filter — ticket prices are weighed against your budget before a plan is ever shown, and prices we couldn't verify are flagged, never invented
• Weather-aware — forecasts from Open-Meteo; when rain is coming, indoor picks like museums and the aquarium swap themselves in
• Open the full seven-day Auckland forecast for daily conditions, temperatures, rain chance and wind, alongside MetService's national warning headlines and their official links
• Two or three comparable plans every time: a relaxed outdoors version, a budget version, a wet-weather backup

READINGS FOR THE DAY YOU PICK
• Rain looked at stop by stop, so an outdoor leg that turns wet gets named rather than glossed over
• Peak UV forecast for the day, with the SunSmart and NIWA basis spelled out beside it — labelled as Open-Meteo's forecast, not a measured level
• Tide predictions for that date, only on the five stops where the water changes the visit, each naming the LINZ port its table comes from and how far that port is
• Road works and closures near your route, asked again from NZTA every time the day is on screen
• Felt earthquake reports from GeoNet for the area — shaking already measured, because earthquakes cannot be forecasted

MAKE IT YOURS
• Edit the day — reorder stops, change how long you stay, swap a place or drop one, and the timings work themselves out again
• The whole day on a map, and each leg handed to Apple Maps for step-by-step driving, transit or walking directions
• Surprise mode — feeling lucky? Roll a blind-box weekend picked for your date
• Check in after a trip and those places slide down the list in the next plan
• A heads-up if the forecast turns wet before a weekend you saved

A WHOLE LIBRARY
Eighteen curated Auckland places, each carrying the official source we checked and the date we checked it, plus a live Apple Maps search when you want something specific. Filter to free only, indoor only, kid-friendly — a venue whose own page names a playground, a baby-changing place or pram access — off-leash dog areas, or places that state step-free access. A place that says nothing on its page stays unmarked rather than being guessed into a filter.

EVERYDAY NZ
Check bundled 2026–2027 national holiday dates and 2026 between-term school breaks, read MetService nationwide warning headlines with source links and fetch time, and search 15 official-service links. Calendar context appears beside your day. Directory links open agency websites; they are not live service data. School-specific dates and holiday venue hours still need checking.

NOW IN NZ
See current nationwide MetService headlines and GeoNet felt reports, each with a source and retrieval time. The NZTA journey link opens current state-highway information. Empty feeds are never treated as a local all-clear.

SHARE IT & KEEP IT
Add a plan to your calendar, send yourself a shareable card of the day or of your year in footprints, and revisit every saved trip offline.

BUILT IN BOTH LANGUAGES
Switch the entire interface between English and 中文 at any time, including the places you plan.

PRIVATE BY DESIGN
No account, tracking, ads or app server. Plans and check-ins stay on your device; export them from Settings.

Weekend NZ is a planning aid, not a booking service. Confirm changing prices, hours and conditions with each venue.

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 1.0.7 — 2026-11-04

Plan the hours, not just the day.

• Each outdoor stop lists the hours its own hourly forecast puts at 60% rain chance or higher, merged into windows. The 60% line is the mark this app draws for a wet day rather than a figure any agency publishes. Where the forecast did not answer for an hour no window is shown, because the app has nothing to say about hours it was never given. These are forecasts, not measurements.
• A protection window does the same for UV: the hours forecast at index 3 or above. 3 is the level SunSmart publishes as the point where protection is required, and the card gives you the number and the source rather than deciding for you.
• Sunset is computed for each stop's own coordinates. The only claim made from it is scheduling: a stay that ends after daylight says so on its own line. Nothing is inferred about safety after dark.
• Each leg now shows its distance, and the day adds a total. The total appears only when every leg was routed, because a length built from the few that answered would be a day you never had.
• A pre-departure card gathers this day's checks in one place: official warnings, state highway events, recent quake reports, per-stop forecast coverage, tide coverage where a stop has a port table and your own time and budget limits. It says which checks have not returned yet and which cannot be answered here. It never says safe: what it reports is each source's answer at the moment it was read.
• Stop cards now show what the venue itself put on record, such as a playground, a changing facility or pram access, and the dog rule, which reads differently in each of its three states: off leash, lead required or barred and never stated. Where nobody wrote it down the card says the rule is unverified instead of going quiet, and the venue's own wording sits one tap away.
• The Saved tab adds a year record built only from the check-ins and saved days this device already holds. Nothing is uploaded and it needs no network to show.

Everyday information includes 15 official service links and public holiday dates through 2027.

### 1.0.6 — 2026-11-02

Pick the city centre your live screens check.

• The Now tab has a reference city centre now: twelve main centres from Auckland down to Invercargill, Auckland by default. The weather card and the MetService warning list both follow whichever one you choose.
• Each live card says what it measured. A reading taken at one city centre is labelled as that point, never as the whole city, so a warning whose boundary excludes your centre is not presented as an all-clear for the rest of it.
• A warning that names an area without publishing a boundary stays in its own group. The app says it cannot decide instead of guessing either way.
• The full seven-day forecast sheet lists each day's temperature, rain chance and wind beside MetService's national warning headlines, with a retrieval time or an explicit unavailable state for each source.
• Live readings are asked for whenever you open the screen and are never stored on the device.

Your Auckland day planner, saved trips and official calendar remain ready when you need them.

### 1.0.5 — 2026-10-29

Warnings now say who they cover.

• A fifth tab, Now, gathers the live feeds in one place: MetService warning headlines and the felt reports people filed with GeoNet over the past seven days, each naming its source and the time it was fetched.
• MetService alerts are matched against the boundary each notice publishes, so the app can tell you whether Auckland or one of your stops falls inside it. When a notice names an area without publishing a boundary, it says it cannot decide instead of guessing. The issuer's own certainty wording and what to do are quoted beside each alert.
• A seven-day outlook under the weather card, with the condition icon taken from the provider's own weather code. Tap a day to plan that day.
• Open the full seven-day forecast for daily temperatures, rain chance and wind alongside official MetService warning headlines. Each source has a clear retrieval or unavailable state.
• Export your saved days and check-ins as one file from Settings. It is written on this device, and the system share sheet asks you where to put it. Nothing is uploaded, and there is no account to upload to.

### 1.0.4 — 2026-10-27

This release puts the New Zealand facts behind a weekend inside the plan itself — the ones nobody wants to re-check by hand.

• New Everyday NZ page: national public holidays for 2026–2027, published 2026 between-term school breaks, and links to 12 official services.
• Read MetService’s nationwide warning feed with source links and fetch time. Empty or unavailable feeds are clearly labelled; these are not forecasts for your selected date.
• See calendar context beside your plan and send a chosen future date back to the planning form.
• Search official services for swimming conditions, tracks, public transport, charging, bin collections, food recalls, hospitals, rent and fuel-price trends.
• Your saved days now show an Auckland explorer checklist based on places you mark as visited on this device.

Holiday dates work offline. Live service values are not implied by directory links, and school-specific dates still need confirmation with your school.

### 1.0.3 — 2026-10-21

This release is about the shape of the phone you already have, and one thing the app could not do before: be used sideways.

• The app now follows your system's light or dark appearance. Every text-on-background pairing was measured against the WCAG AA contrast floor before it was allowed on screen, so a day reads as well in the dark as it does in the light. The share card is drawn in the light palette whichever you use, so a card you send looks the same to everyone who receives it.
• Turning your phone sideways no longer asks you to turn it back. The day measures the width it is actually given and re-flows to it.
• When the window is wide, the day puts the map, the live checks and the budget beside the itinerary instead of under it. And where the system tells the app that a strip down the middle of the screen is blocked, the split puts its gutter there, so no control lands in the one place a thumb cannot reach.
• Drawing a share card now says so, and refuses a second tap while it is working. A slow card used to look like a dead button.

None of this sends us who you are: appearance and orientation are read on the device, and every reading the day shows is still either computed on-device or a single read-only request.
