### 2/5 — Great Concept, Weak Database and Inaccurate Estimates

*2026-08-07*

I appreciate the idea behind Welling — making food logging simple by just snapping a photo of your plate. The concept is smart and could be genuinely helpful. Unfortunately, the execution falls short. The product database is woefully lacking, and the app’s generic guesses for what’s on your plate are often inaccurate. Because of that, I find myself double-checking its work, which defeats the whole purpose of an ‘easy’ tracker. I can’t fully trust the numbers it gives me. I even paid for the one-year subscription and now regret it — it just isn’t reliable enough to justify the cost. If they updated and expanded their database, this could be a much better tool. As it stands, it’s more frustrating than useful.”

**Developer response:** Hi EnableAbe, sorry to hear you had a bad experience with our app. If you're referring to our barcode database, it has a 98% positive hit rate for US barcodes. For generic meals and dishes, the AI will make an estimation to its best abilities. It would be helpful if you could share which foods it got wrong and we can help resolve it. Feel free to contact us at support@welling.ai

### 3/5 — Identify

*2026-04-28, version 6.26*

The Welling AI does not identify your meal very adequate even when I take a close up picture of my meal

### 3/5 — Not true AI

*2026-03-31*

This is a prompted response App not AI. Simple things I say like “I didn’t eat breakfast “ it doesn’t understand. It also scolds me for 100 calorie breakfast choices (Oatmeal) because it has “Maple and Brown Sugar” It says its High in calories huh? The oatmeal has less than one gram of sugar. And I gave it the entire label. It is not thinking -it is giving canned responses to the word sugar.

**Developer response:** Hi, thanks for the feedback and sorry to hear you're experiencing these issues. Sounds like a bug that shouldn't happen. Can I ask you to email support@welling.ai with this issue and the team will have a look! Thank you

### 2/5 — Not Even Close to Ready

*2026-02-20*

Welling is a typical food tracking app, but with the entry and search functionality replaced by a conversational AI. Unfortunately, the AI is absolutely not ready for prime-time, which means having the entire UX built around it is a terrible idea. It can’t retrieve basic search queries. It can’t adjust former entries consistently. It makes terrible assumptions about serving sizes, etc.

You’re essentially forced to save everything as a favorite meal, which entirely defeats the purpose of the AI.

I will say the interface is very smooth and intuitive. If you weren’t forced to access everything via the AI, it might be a great app.

**Developer response:** Hi Jonny, thanks for the feedback and sorry to hear you're experiencing these issues. That is definitely not how Welling should behave. Could I ask you to reach out on support@welling.ai and we can have a look at your account and see if we can resolve the issue? Thanks!

### 3/5 — Inaccurate and unreliable, but still cool

*2026-02-05*

The idea is amazing and the ai meal prep feature is neat. However, I’ve found the ai estimations to be extremely unreliable and inconsistent. If you put in the same meal twice, it could give you two different sets of Macros. The app told me that 2 oz of my home cooked meal was 180 calories. I copied the same meal and adjusted for 3 oz and it told me, one extra ounce of the same meal was now 1,600 calories.
I have to double check and edit each meal, something I thought I’d be doing very little of while PAYING for an app. Hopefully in a few years the technology is advanced enough to keep up with what this company is advertising. A little annoyed I payed for three months. My expectations were too high.

**Developer response:** Thanks for the feedback! It seems like there is maybe a bug in your account. This is not how Welling should behave, apologies for that! It would be very helpful if you could reach out to support@welling.ai with your account and we will have a look at resolving that issue.

### 3/5 — Food database is limited and inaccurate

*2026-01-18*

I think this is going in the right direction in terms id user experience. However the core issue is that the database is limited. Some of the things i scan or eat cannot be found and it’s cumbersome to scan/save etc. sometimes the macros come back inaccurate compared to the information online or on fitness pal.

**Developer response:** Thanks for the feedback. We are working to increase the scanning database for Australian users!

### 3/5 — Has potential

*2026-01-11, version 6.20*

I was excited about this because I’ve been an avid user of MFP, but it would get the same things incorrect, the estimates would be way off and it would glitch often. I ended up going back to MFP. I really tried to make it work

### 3/5 — Need more tuning when it comes to portions

*2025-11-13, version 6.18*

The app concept is great, but the scale is way too off, especially when measuring fruits,

### 3/5 — Buggy

*2025-11-03, version 6.18*

I really do like the app but has been fairly buggy lately. Won’t auto log, mostly logging issues. Making it take way too long to plan my week.

### 3/5 — Glitch

*2025-10-21*

I love the “math” that Welling provides, but the coaching is off. When I explain that I only eat two meals a day, she will ask the next day if I forgot to enter dinner. Also, I am recovering from major surgery and not able to log 8000 steps right now, which I have told her multiple times. She always promises to make a note and apologizes, but nothing changes. I even said moving forward to just do the math for me and not worry about the coaching piece. Again nothing changes. Heartfelt apologies and promises to make a note of the issue are nice but clearly are not happening.

### 3/5 — Was expecting more

*2025-10-16, version 6.18*

Love talking to AI, unfortunately app not calculate calories intake correctly, so I had to check labels and adjust manually. Even when I scanned nutrition. Weird AI was not working it out and calculating correctly. I’m glad I took week trial, I won’t be taking the subscription as I can really get the same/ similar with Copilot

### 4/5 — Looks good

*2025-08-26, version 6.17*

Only just downloaded and the concept sounds good so hopefully I will find that out

### 3/5 — Great in theory, frustrating in daily use

*2025-08-11, version 6.16*

I was using ChatGPT to log my food. I switched to Welling and so far every day I’m considering switching back to ChatGPT again. Summary of my experience:

- It doesn’t do well with branded food lookups. In ChatGPT I can say things like “I had 1 Aldi sea salt flat bread” and it’ll look it up online and pull the data. Welling just guesses. It doesn’t use UK databases so its guesses are terrible.
- It’s buggy. Sometimes I snap a pic and say “1 of these” and it’ll log it. Other times (randomly) it’ll tell me about the food and say “to log it say ‘I had one of these’”, but it also doesn’t seem to have chat context so if I then type “I had one of these” it asks me what and I have to resubmit the photo.
- I’m not convinced by the way it does macros as a % of calories. Yesterday I went for a walk, burned around 700kcal, and Welling wanted me to eat 240g of protein! I weight 80kg so that’s 3x my weight in grams! Every online recommendation in the UK is no more than 2x your weight in grams. I can’t cap Welling at 160g protein though because it’s set as a %. Eating 240g of protein is, by all accounts, dangerous if I keep doing it long term.
- It’s really hard to log a proportion of a meal. For example: if I cook a frittata with 3 eggs, 2 slices of ham, 2 peppers, and tell Welling I had half of it, it gets confused. Instead it logs 3 eggs, 2 slices ham, 2 peppers, AND half a frittata!

Most of these are the bits that ChatGPT does really well, so it seems like they’ve hampered the AI capabilities of Welling. Maybe they’re using an older/cheaper model (I’m not sure which LLM and which version it uses).

So far the only thing it does better than ChatGPT is storing the entries under proper days and meals. ChatGPT is just a conversation history and for it to work I have to start a new conversation/log daily. Welling clearly has my food logs in a database, which makes it better for reviewing over time.

For now I’m keeping it. I’ve found workarounds to most of these issues - mainly I just take photos of the nutrition labels every time. But it’s a daily frustration and honestly, I’m considering going back to ChatGPT and sacrificing the improved logging functionality (or trying to build that into ChatGPT somehow).

If they could improve these issues it would be an easy win for Welling and a 5* review.

### 3/5 — Good potential but needs more work

*2025-08-10, version 6.16*

I liked this in parts but it needs loads more functionality to make it properly usable.

### 2/5 — Bad memory, inaccurate

*2025-07-24, version 6.15*

AI is awesome if you take everything at face value and never question the answers you’re given. If you want to use this app as an accurate tool, you’ll be putting in as much effort on prompts as you would doing this by hand.

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — 150 a year

*2026-07-16*

Makes you answer a bunch of questions and then tell you to pay. That should be stated upfront and before. App deleted, useless money grab

**Developer response:** Hi, you do not have to pay. There is a 7 day free trial with no charge at all. You can try it for free and see if you like it. Only if you decide to continue you will be charged. Hope that helps.

### 1/5 — Extremely Disao

*2026-06-29*

This is actually the first time I have bothered to review an app, but the experience was so bad that I wanted others to know and hopefully avoid wasting their time.

I was excited about finding a nutrition app where I could chat both to make it easier to track my nutrition vs. goals and to dive deeper into some of the metrics and how to improve.

The first issue is that the app kept forgetting things already outlined. This memory fade cost a lot of time because I had to keep repeating myself.

Second, there was an issue where repeatedly it would simply reply with something like “Sorry I can’t find the food you are trying to adjust,” even though I wasn’t trying to adjust anything. I would then just reply “focus” and it would get back on track.

These kind of repeated inputs are what drove the final thing that put me off this product. I was trying to work through how to lower my sodium and all of a sudden I got a message “You have reached your limit of 200 chats for the day.” Mind you there was no warning, nothing I saw when I signed up ever mentioned a limit. This was my first day with the app, and I spent a lot of effort trying to figure out how best to communicate with it, and digging into a lot of questions, but probably half of my chats were trying to get it to correct when it had memory fade or glitched.

Overall, even within the core product there are big problems. It was significantly off in calculating nutrition from a photo I uploaded. Other times even when I gave it a specific brand of something I ate, it miscalculated the nutritional info.

Overall, like a lot of AI tools this one was clearly rushed to production before it was ready

**Developer response:** Hi Burg, sorry to hear you had a bad experience with the app. These are not common issues and we would love to help resolve them. Feel free to reach out to support@welling.ai and the team will have a look at it.

### 1/5 — Inaccurate but looks nice

*2026-04-08, version 6.25*

Pretty design but I found the AI to be way off with very limited options to correct the mistakes. Ultimately the convenience of the AI was undercut by bad results and limited editing capabilities and so I moved on.

### 1/5 — Scam pricing

*2026-03-02*

Was so close to subscribing after the strong into but strongarming me into paying a $120 annual subscription or getting charged double to just do the monthly and see how it goes is classic tech bro scam nonsense.

Seriously if you have an actually good product, trust that people will stay? Don't play this scammy annual sub thing like Adobe.

So I'm out, nice try though. Might just build my own version with Claude.

**Developer response:** Hi, I am not sure what this review is about. We are not scamming anyone and we do not mislead anyone into buying the subscription. There is a 7 day free trial that you can cancel easily through the App Store app as usual. If you have forgotten to cancel, you can always request a refund. Please reach out to support@welling.ai. Would appreciate it if you change or remove this review.

### 1/5 — Not accurate

*2025-12-10, version 6.18*

This app is not accurate at all. While I was trying to make adjustments to what I had previously input, it just kept adding those calories to my daily total and dwindling it down until I had about 200 cal left for the day and I couldn’t get it to correct itself no matter what I said.

### 1/5 — The only thing that’s “free” is the trial

*2025-11-09*

This app is 100% NOT FREE - the false ads on social media tells you that it’s a free app.. it is not. This would be way better if there were some of the features that was free (example, just the chat function where you’d have to pay premium for the photo step) but you do y even get that. Absolutely pathetic use of false advertising

**Developer response:** Hi, thank you for the message. The app has free trials available. So you can try it out for free and if you don't like it you can cancel the trial and if you do like it you can continue. You will only be charged 7 days after you start a trial. We don't advertise the app to be completely free.

### 1/5 — Paid for a year ($120) and deleted it, so disappointed

*2025-10-19*

I bought a full year sub for $120 and gave it a very serious try - entering everything daily and trying to teach the AI but after so so many errors I’m done as it’s way more work than it should be. Constantly miscalculating food. No ability to manually enter steps if you don’t want to link to apple health. Doesn’t have an app for Apple Watch as well! But ultimately the kicker for me was the constant mistakes in logging and really poor nutritional advice/guidance. Useless at best, erroneous advice at worst - constantly making mistakes. Brought zero value and a lot of frustration. At this high price tag it’s just unacceptable. Annoyed I wasted so much money trying to commit to this and teaching the AI for nothing.

### 1/5 — Be careful of free trail

*2025-10-15*

I select the 7 day free trail, but still being charged for $25.00 dollars, I don’t know why?

### 1/5 — False advertisement

*2025-09-21*

App is not free. It’s takes your information, then you rate the app, then It tells you to subscribe for a plan.

**Developer response:** Hi, please don't make these false claims. Welling is the only weight loss coaching app available that allows you to track and chat/ask about your diet at the same time. To make this happen, we run many AI models and that comes with a cost. We never advertise to be a free app. We do mention that you have a free trial. You can try free for 7 days and see if you like it. If you don't like it you can cancel the trial.

### 1/5 — The app keeps crashing

*2025-08-28, version 6.17*

The functionality is ok and works well for calorie counting, but it keeps crashing. There are days when I log the foods diligently only to see the app frozen and not counting any of it. Additionally, if I go on airplane mode the app logs out. Both are frustrating especially for a paid app. If this doesn’t get fixed I will uninstall and stop paying for it - free versions of chat AI count the calories just fine.

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — Great!

*2026-07-30*

Great app!

**Developer response:** Glad to hear you like it!

### 5/5 — Best tracker!

*2026-04-18*

This is probably best tracker for someone who doesn't like recording things on Notes or any other platforms. You can literally tell the chat, and it will record it for you! So simple, so easy!

### 5/5 — Food Database

*2026-04-17, version 6.25*

The app is super easy to use and has clean aesthetics. Their database actually does a great job showing a wide range of food cultures I eat from too

### 5/5 — Great App

*2026-03-15, version 6.23*

Setup was easy and app is great! No hidden adds or purchases

### 5/5 — liking this so far

*2025-08-02*

no issues at all. I like its easier for me to track my daily calorie intakes. Thanks welling Ai

**Developer response:** Thanks for the feedback, glad you like it!

### 5/5 — Made me lose weight

*2025-03-12, version 5.2*

Ya i lost weight now i have a femboy boyfriend

### 5/5 — AI = amazing experience

*2025-02-10*

I tried MyFitnessPal a couple times, but it never stuck because it’s so time consuming to find and keep track of everything. Welling makes it so simple and fast. I was most skeptical that the AI would be accurate, but so far it hasn’t missed anything. Extremely impressed!

**Developer response:** Glad to hear you like it! Your positive feedback means a lot to us!

### 5/5 — It’s Like Having a Dietitian in Your Pocket

*2025-01-28*

**TL;DR:** It’s fast, it’s easy, and it has everything I need. Fantastic work!

Welling is by far the fastest and easiest way I’ve found to track calories. Whether you log by describing your food, using a photo, scanning a barcode, or scanning a label, it is incredibly quick and intuitive. The photo and description features are accurate to the label within 5% in most cases, and even closer if you describe your meal in more detail. The voice-to-text feature makes logging even faster. Its ease of use makes staying consistent less of a hassle, which is the most important thing for me.

My favorite thing about the app is how you can actually talk to it. If I ask how my day is looking so far, it gives me a quick rundown. If I need to know how much more protein I need, it tells me instantly and even suggests good ways to get there. It also gives feedback after you log a meal, letting you know what was great or what could be improved, with gentle suggestions or alternatives.

UPDATE: The app continues to improve with regular updates, and I’m happy to see the team is already working on writing nutrition data to Apple Health. The support team is responsive and open to feedback, which makes me excited to stick with the app long-term.

Looking forward to seeing where this goes. It deserves Cal AI’s spot in the App Store, and I’m confident it’ll only get better.

**Developer response:** Hi thank you for the detailed feedback and so glad to hear the app works for you. As for the writing back to Apple Health, this is already put on the planning, so stay tuned!

### 5/5 — AI Calorie Tracker is a powerful and easy-to-use app

*2024-11-06*

The app’s AI-driven technology quickly recognizes foods and estimates calorie counts, making it incredibly convenient for tracking meals on the go. The interface is clean and intuitive, with helpful features like barcode scanning, custom meal plans, and progress tracking.

**Developer response:** Thanks so much for the feedback!

### 5/5 — Marta

*2024-10-25, version 2.9.2*

I’ve found the welling app to be innovative and clear, and appreciated how it would estimate my calories from a picture. The AI is also very motivating and gives you advice on what food to substitute to achieve your goals :)
