## What is Wenmai?

Study the primary texts of Chinese religious and philosophical traditions with the original Chinese, Pinyin and translation side by side, and let a citation-strict assistant help you read closely without ever inventing a source.

Wenmai brings together Daoist, Confucian and Chinese folk religious classics in one scholarly library. Every text and figure is labelled by tradition, school, historical period and region, so you can see context rather than a single flattened narrative.

The scripture library offers simplified or traditional characters, layered commentary, and narration that reads pages aloud with adjustable pace, playback speed, read-along highlighting and an optional guqin background. Guided courses walk you through lessons, quizzes and flashcards with progress tracking across Daoist, Confucian and folk study paths.

Encyclopedia entries on figures, concepts, festivals, etiquette and the I Ching present competing interpretations instead of one fixed definition, reflecting genuine scholarly disagreement. The Historical Atlas maps temples, mountains, academies and archaeological sites, two-way linked to a dynasty timeline, so place and period stay connected as you explore.

When questions arise, the study assistant quotes only passages already stored in the app, verifies every citation on your device, and clearly labels its own generated text as AI-generated. It does not predict, advise on ritual practice, or claim any religious authority or affiliation with a temple, lineage or institution.

The scripture library, guided courses and Historical Atlas are free to use. An optional Scholar subscription simply removes the daily limit on study-assistant questions; nothing else is gated behind it.

A Legal, Privacy and App Information centre includes 15 documents, a privacy dashboard, data export and in-app data deletion, along with language and region settings covering interface, scripture, translation, narration and assistant languages, each with honest translation-status labels.

- Choose your narration voice for English and Chinese independently, with smoothest-sounding voices ranked first and instant previews.
- New playback speed slider from 0.5x to 2x, in the player and in Settings, with named presets and read-along highlighting that keeps pace.
- Background and lock screen playback: reading continues when you leave the app or lock your phone, with passage titles and transport controls on the lock screen.
- Narration now survives interruptions. Take a call or let another app speak, and reading picks up from the sentence where it paused instead of restarting.
- Share a short audio clip of any passage, with its source citation included.
