### 3/5 — Many alerts for one whale confirmation

*2026-07-24, version 4.4.2*

Gives many alerts over hours for one whale confirmation. Making it seem like there's multiple. Other than that I love the app

### 3/5 — Updates

*2026-07-12, version 4.4.2*

Just wish the updates were quicker especially on the map

### 2/5 — Lousy App

*2026-07-11, version 4.4.1*

I’ve been trying to report a whale sighting a number of times but a month later and it still doesn’t show up.

### 2/5 — Older version was better

*2025-08-25, version 4.2.3*

The new updates have made the app less user friendly as a person that enjoys seeing where whales are, when they were there, and photos of them where they were reported. Now all we see is a grey unconfirmed alert for about a day, and many times it will give error messages that data is unavailable. I think more filters for whale types and 1 day option would be useful. Please bring back the previous functionality.

### 3/5 — Great data, with usability issues

*2025-06-22, version 4.2*

First: so appreciative for this free app. The data is uses is great, as is the ability to report through it. I’ve used it to stay aware of whales I’ve come across in the Puget Sound. After the most recent update, it seems the API call to get the whale sightings is blocking. You can’t do anything with the app on the first 15-30 seconds and when you try to move the map it freezes. A feature that allows you to filter by species or time seen would be great!

### 2/5 — Please update your app

*2025-03-16, version 3.1*

This app is not working well on my new iPhone 16. App needs some bug fixes. Not allowing me to enter data in correct fields

### 4/5 — Good but could be improved

*2024-04-01, version 3.1*

This is a super helpful app for the whale enthusiast and I can see how it would be helpful for those with boats! Unfortunately, the update time is very much lagging, which is less helpful. I was using this to try to see whales on a recent trip and I was in the area where whales were located, but didn’t see the updates to this app until hours later despite checking it and refreshing it frequently. Good, could be great with some updates.

### 3/5 — Continues to use location well after closing the app

*2023-12-27, version 3.1*

I like this app and check on my daily commute across Puget Sound, but it continues to use location services for up to an hour after I stopped using the app (and have been inland, well away from water. I have it set to use the precise location while using the app). Otherwise it’s nice to use and very informative concerning the whales and whale pods spotted along my commute.

### 4/5 — So far…

*2023-10-23, version 3.1*

I really love how this app is designed. Straightforward, not a lot of distracting and unnecessary elements. Definitely a few tweaks needed to really make it ultimately user friendly but it is by far the best one I’ve used!

### 4/5 — Was contacted about my sighting!

*2023-05-28*

Very impressed that I was contacted about my sighting by a person from the app. The app is legit. I will continue to use it.

### 2/5 — Potential but suuuper slow

*2022-10-13, version 3.0.3*

The multiple layers added to this map feature makes the app run super slow. And I have the latest iPhone so pretty sure they need to do more on their end to reduce the lag time.

### 4/5 — Could use some work, but overall AMAZING!!!

*2022-05-01, version 3.0.2*

OMG.

This app is amazing for whale enthusiasts, mariners, fishermen, researchers, citizen scientists, educators, aviators, environmentalists, and so much more.

I get that the creators currently only think of this as a way to help prevent ship strikes; are they not realizing how incredible this tool is? When I zoom out I can see where in the entire world whales have been seen and what type. I can see that their ranges and distributions are different than what we previously thought post-whaling. This tool could provide international open source crowdsourcing for data collection on all whales for all researchers looking to aid in endangered species conservation.

It needs some performance improvements. The app needs more downloads and support for the developers to be able to do those though. This tool is phenomenal. I’m telling all of my friends. Thank you 😍

### 2/5 — No alert feature

*2021-10-31, version 3.0.1*

The app is called Whale Alert but there is no feature to configure alerts for your area. You can report sightings but not be alerted when others report them.

### 1/5 — Whales on the freeway?!

*2025-08-04, version 4.2.3*

For the last few weeks, I get notifications several times a day (while I’m driving on the freeway, in a restaurant, at home, etc) that I’m about to hit a whale. The notifications are getting a bit annoying. I kept the app hoping updates would fix, but it’s been a bit now. Deleting and hoping this gets resolved!

### 1/5 — The app is now unusable

*2025-08-02, version 4.2.3*

Used to be an incredible app but it is now completely broken and unusable. I have the iPhone 16 Pro and this app is barely functional now with the new updates. Not sure what they optimized this app for, but it is broken on iPhones now

### 1/5 — Crashes

*2025-07-11, version 4.2*

The app was great before they updated it and changed the interface, yes it lagged before but now it is completely unusable. It freezes the second I try to do anything to the map and then crashes. Save yourself some sanity and don’t use this app

### 1/5 — Not helpful in Australia

*2024-08-18, version 3.1*

I wanted to like this but it shows no sightings in Australia. Whale Watch is better for Australian users.

### 1/5 — Crashes

*2022-11-10, version 3.0.3*

This app is a joke. It crashes constantly. Don’t waste your time with it

### 1/5 — so laggy

*2022-10-30, version 3.0.3*

it’s so laggy i can’t even move the map

### 1/5 — Map Doesn’t Work

*2022-09-26, version 3.0.3*

On an iPhone XR, it’s incredibly slow to zoom-in and out on the map. This app is a good concept, but needs a lot of work.

### 1/5 — Whale alert

*2021-03-27, version 2.2.1*

Quand j’ouvre l’application elle se referme tout de suite je ne peu pas l’utiliser.svp

### 1/5 — Doesn’t appear to work

*2019-07-23, version 2.2.1*

This app doesn’t appear to work off the Oregon and Washington coast. Sightings and feedback emails go unanswered. Is anyone home?

### 1/5 — Where are the sightings?

*2019-05-22, version 2.2.1*

It's just google maps, no sightings appear, nothing happens when I tap on the area, nothing happens when I tap on "leave feedback". Am I missing something?

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — Retired

*2026-06-19, version 4.4.1*

Love this app. My guests love the rare opportunity to see the whales (Respectfully from a distance, engine/sonar off.) I still get excited myself each time. Also gives a heads up caution while passing thru an area.

### 5/5 — Whales

*2025-07-03, version 4.2*

W sigma rizz approved

### 5/5 — New Update Improved!

*2025-06-10*

I neglected to download this app before due to the bad reviews, but those were from a year ago and the app has updated since then.

So far it has worked smoothly in all aspects, the only thing is that so many whale watchers do not report on here and instead report to Facebook or through email newsletters and WhatsApp groups.

I hope we can have more accurate reports on here in the near future, particularly in Washington.

To the app developers, Thank you!

### 5/5 — Great and useful app

*2025-06-05, version 4.2*

This is a very good app, very easy to use, with a fantastic purpose.

### 5/5 — Helpful

*2025-06-04, version 4.1*

This app could really help save more whales

### 5/5 — Great app

*2025-06-04, version 4.1*

Very useful to make the ocean a safer place 🙏🏻

### 5/5 — All boaters need this!

*2023-10-18, version 3.1*

Really important system to alert boaters to avoid endangered whales and submit their sightings. A must for anyone who works on the water!

### 5/5 — Anyone who hates on this app don’t see its future potential

*2023-03-02, version 3.0.3*

Some of these reviews are made to taint this app’s worth. The cause is a start and this app is its representation.

### 5/5 — Finally!

*2023-01-19, version 3.0.3*

an app to track your mom

### 5/5 — Great!

*2019-04-07, version 2.2.1*

This app could help a lot of people!
