## What is Whale Watching?

Welcome to WhaleWatch – a global community powered Whale sightings platform.

Originating in Australia over a decade ago, we've embarked on this journey once more in response to popular demand. However, this time, it extends beyond Australia's borders. It's no longer just for Australians to observe, post, and share their encounters with the majestic creatures of our remarkable planet; it's for the world to embrace.

Whale migration, one of nature's most awe-inspiring phenomena, is a remarkable journey undertaken by various species of whales across vast stretches of ocean. Spanning thousands of miles annually, these migrations serve essential purposes such as breeding, feeding, and avoiding harsh environmental conditions. Some species, like the humpback whale, travel from their feeding grounds in polar regions to warmer waters near the equator to give birth and mate, while others, like the gray whale, undertake epic journeys from Arctic waters to the warmer waters of the Pacific coast of Mexico. These migrations are not only crucial for the survival of whale populations but also play a significant role in maintaining the health and balance of marine ecosystems worldwide.

VIEW, POST AND SHARE – WHALE SIGHTINGS

View the interactive Whale sightings map. You can view and post your whale sightings on the WhaleWatch app for the wider whale watching enthusiasts. Note behaviours, characteristics, species and upload photos to get your sightings published. Note that we may restrict what appears on the app if there are too many. For example; one tour boat carrying 50+ can create a lot of sightings which are similar so we moderate the platform for a better user experience.

WHALE WATCH – GALLERY

Seen it breach or slap? Or, did you see a mother and calf combo on your tour. Be sure to post your photo for it to be available on the app.

SIGN UP IS NOT A MUST. JUST ENJOY THE APP

We ONLY request you to sign up and create an account if you are keen to submit your sightings and photos to the gallery. If not, there is no sign up required. Just enjoy the app.

### 2/5 — Old Sightings

*2025-08-09*

*2025-08-02*

Great app, was looking forward to this app coming back . 1 suggestion can you note the area of the sighting in the “List”also?. Would help narrow down recent sightings in the area..

### 1/5 — PROBLEMS LOGGING IN

*2025-06-21*

Even though you sent me a temporary password!

### 1/5 — Always same, miss information

*2025-06-19*

Whale always stay at the same spot, they never move. Does the app even give accurate information?

### 1/5 — Inaccurate data

*2024-10-09*

The app is showing my whale results that were spotted 8-10 months ago. It’s not at all accurate.

**Developer response:** Hello there, seems you are seeing the default view on the app. Please see on the right there is an icon where you filter sightings by Today, 7 days, 30 days, 90 days and Last 12 months. Depends on where you are viewing the app, we show you the data that is available. Hope this resolves your query. Thank you.

### 4/5 — No sightings

*2024-07-06*

Thanks for replying, you are right & I was too early in the season & no one had yet added any sightings! I am having trouble getting into my account to log sightings but I guess eventually I will figure it out.

**Developer response:** Hi there, you probably checked this earlier in the season. We rely on community, whale watching enthusiasts, professionals and service providers such as photographers, videographers and generally the whale watching enthusiasts community to keep the sightings coming into the app. The app is also a world wide app now, so not just NSW or just Australia and we are working on our relationships with others around the world.

There are a lot more users now, and hence a lot more sightings too on the app. So, thank you for being a user and a whale enthusiast. More so, thank you for your support to an Australian business who has built this app as a free self funded app for the community.

Please be on the lookout for a notification as we are also adding a list view with time and date stamps on the sightings. Cheers!

### 4/5 — Date filter

*2024-06-22*

Appreciate this may not be new, but a date filter on the map view would be a game changer.

**Developer response:** hey there. we have added a list view and a map view that sorts out by latest first (and also what is closest to your device location) but yes – we have a few others who have asked for a filter by date and filter by region too. Please bear with us as we work through this. Thank you. WhaleWatch team @ Mobiddiction
