WhaleTales is a library of illustrated comic stories in English for children aged 9 to 11 who are learning English. Your child reads at their own level and taps any word to learn it.
TWO READING LEVELS
A short placement test picks the level: Starter (Pre-A1 to A1) or Explorer (A1 to A2). Each level is a growing library of illustrated stories, and new ones are added over time.
A MAP IN THE FOG
The home screen is a map covered in fog. Opening a sealed place reveals a new story, and finishing a story clears the fog around it. The map moves in every direction and zooms with a pinch, from all the land your child has uncovered to a close look. Reading a chapter again costs nothing.
A CARD FOR EVERY WORD
Every word on the page is real text. Tap a word to see what it means, how to say it and an example sentence. When the app is in your language and its language pack is on the device, the card's sentences can also appear in your language, translated on the device.
WORDS THAT COME BACK
Every word your child looks up goes to the Words tab, and each word comes back when it is time to review it.
FINDING YOUR PLACE
A row of dots shows which chapters are read. Tap it to open the chapter list and go back to any chapter already opened.
DISCOVERIES
Finishing chapters unlocks characters, places and items, each with its own card. The Me tab counts reading days and lets your child vote on what the next stories are about.
FOR PARENTS
A parental gate sits in front of signing in, purchases and every link out of the app. It asks a grown-up to multiply two numbers written out in words, and pauses for one minute after three wrong answers in a row. A parent signs in with Apple, and your child's nickname stays on the device. There are no ads and no third-party tracking. WhaleTales works on iPhone and iPad.
HOW THE STORIES ARE MADE
The stories and pictures are made with AI. Each story passed a safety check and a review before it joined the library. Nothing is made while your child reads, and nothing your child types is sent to an AI model.
TRY, THEN CHOOSE
Without a plan, your child can open two stories at each level and read the first chapter of each for free. To read on, a parent can choose:
- Annual subscription, with a seven-day free trial for new subscribers
- Monthly subscription, with a seven-day free trial for new subscribers
- Lifetime access, a one-time purchase
All three open every chapter of every story, including stories added later. Prices are shown in the app before you buy.
Payment is charged to your Apple Account when you confirm the purchase, or when the free trial ends. A subscription renews automatically unless you cancel it at least 24 hours before the end of the current period. You can manage or cancel it in your Apple Account settings. Credits bought in an earlier version stay valid; credit packs are no longer sold.
LANGUAGES
The app's screens come in 16 languages. Stories and word cards are in English, because English is what your child is learning.
