## What is WhatChanged?

WhatChanged helps you answer one question fast: what’s different?

Use one app across iPhone, iPad, and Mac to compare two files, two folders, or text and get a clear summary of changes.

On iPhone and iPad, start in the app or send two files from Files straight to WhatChanged. Perfect for backups, exports, cloud drives, builds, and any “did this copy match?” moment.

◼ How to use

  • In the app

    Open WhatChanged

Choose two files or two folders (Left and Right)

    Tap Compare

  • From the share sheet

In the Files app, or another app that can share files, select exactly two files

    Tap Share → WhatChanged

The report opens in WhatChanged automatically

      Tip:
The extension is best for file-to-file compare. To compare folders, open the main app.

  • Direct Text Compare

    Open the Text tab

Paste or type text on both sides

Compare instantly, without selecting files first

  • Text Diff tools

Open a text diff from Direct Text Compare, a supported text file, or a folder-pair text diff

Use Copy Diff to copy a unified-diff-style result as plain text

Use Find in Diff to search inside the current diff, move between matches, and highlight matching rows

Review compact Diff Summary badges for total changes, modified rows, added rows, and removed rows

Read cleaner results on iPhone and iPad, with polished layout and no-difference states

  • Safe Merge

    Run a folder comparison

    Open Safe Merge Preview

Choose a rule: Newest, Oldest, Smallest (New), Smallest (Old), Biggest (New), or Biggest (Old)

Review the output folder and safety preview

Tap Merge Now to copy the selected results into a new output folder

WhatChanged keeps the original folders unchanged

Successful merges include a generated README with the compared folders, selected rule, copied items, counts, output location, and safety notes

◼ Highlights

  • Compare files and folders (left vs right)

  • Folder compare with added, removed, modified, and renamed items

  • Safe Merge for folder results

  • Built-in text diff for Direct Text Compare, supported text files, and folder-pair results

  • Copy Diff, Find in Diff, row highlighting, and Diff Summary badges

  • Improved text diff performance for long text comparisons and large replacement blocks

  • Optional SHA-256 verification for content-level certainty, with caching for faster re-checks

  • Smart ignore rules: hidden items, extensions, names, and patterns

  • Text-friendly options: ignore line endings and whitespace-only changes

  • Preview supported files, keep recent comparisons, and export/share reports

  • 25 languages, plus an optional in-app language override

◼ Safe by design

WhatChanged does not modify or delete your originals.

Comparisons are read-only. Safe Merge writes only to a new output folder after you confirm the merge and safety checks pass.

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 1.70.0 — 2026-07-11

What’s New in Version 1.70.0:

Safe Merge Assistant

This update makes Safe Merge easier to review before anything is copied.

Safe Merge Preview now includes a new Assistant summary with clear counts for selected items, choice groups, conflicts, blocking issues, and preflight checks.

You can also review choice details for each output path. WhatChanged shows which item is selected or recommended, which side it comes from, and why the current rule selected it.

The new “why selected” explanations make Safe Merge feel more guided, especially when both folders contain changes for the same path.

Safe Merge remains safe by design. Originals are not changed, and files are copied only into a new output folder after you confirm the merge and safety checks pass.

### 1.65.0 — 2026-06-15

What’s New in Version 1.65.0:

Trust & Proof for Folder Comparisons

This update makes folder comparisons easier to understand, verify, and trust on iPhone and iPad.

Folder results now include compact evidence badges, so you can see how each item was classified: SHA-256, Text, Metadata, Presence, Unreadable, or Unknown.

Folder reports now include a Verification summary too. Reopen a .wchg folder report to see proof counts for SHA-256 checks, metadata-only items, presence-only changes, unreadable items, unknown items, and items that can be improved with SHA-256.

When a completed folder comparison has items that can be verified more strongly, WhatChanged now offers a “Verify with SHA-256” action. It reruns the current folder comparison with SHA-256 enabled for that run only, without permanently changing your settings.

This update also adds the same evidence badges inside reopened folder reports, while file reports stay focused on file-to-file results.

Settings now includes a small thank-you and review section, making it easier to leave an App Store review if WhatChanged has helped you save time or compare with more confidence.

As always, comparisons are read-only. WhatChanged does not modify or delete your original files.

### 1.60.0 — 2026-05-26

What’s New in Version 1.60.0:

A Stronger Text Diff Experience on iPhone and iPad

This update brings several text comparison improvements to WhatChanged on iOS and iPadOS.

Text diff now includes Copy Diff, so you can copy a unified-diff-style result as plain text from Direct Text Compare, file-based text diff, or folder-pair text diff.

Find in Diff is now available too. Search inside the current diff, move between matches, and use row-level highlighting to navigate changes more easily.

Text diff results also now include compact summary badges for total changes, modified rows, added rows, and removed rows.

The diff layout has been polished as well. Results now start near the top of the view, no-difference states feel cleaner, and the text diff view remains easier to read on both iPhone and iPad.

This update also brings shared text diff performance improvements, including faster handling for long text comparisons and large replacement blocks.

As always, comparisons are read-only. WhatChanged does not modify or delete your original files.

### 1.50.0 — 2026-05-06

Safe Merge is here: after a folder comparison, you can copy selected results into a new output folder while keeping the original files and folders unchanged.

More merge control: choose Newest, Oldest, Smallest (New), Smallest (Old), Biggest (New), or Biggest (Old), with a preview before anything is copied.

Direct Text Compare is now easier to reach: text comparison has moved into its own Text tab, so file/folder compare and text compare each have a clearer place in the app.

Official Website added in Settings: quickly open the WhatChanged website for product information, support, privacy policy, terms of use, and related resources.

Additional UI polish, localization refinements, and stability improvements across the app.

### 1.40 — 2026-04-02

Saved Jobs on iPhone and iPad: save important comparisons as jobs and keep them separate from ordinary Recents, so repeated compare work is easier to reopen.

Save older comparisons too: you can now turn an existing recent comparison into a saved job later from Recents, not only right after a compare.

Clearer compare screen: Saved Jobs now appear above Recents, and saved jobs are easier to browse and manage in the full list.

Additional UI polish and stability improvements across the app.
