## What is What's For Dinner Tonight?

Open the app. Snap your fridge. See tonight's dinner.

WhatsForDinner reads the photo — your fridge, your pantry, even a bag of
groceries — and shows you meals you can make right now, with what you already
have. No meal plans. No shopping list. No 6pm takeout guilt. Your photo is
parsed and never stored.

And it's ready the moment you install it: forty family-tested recipes ship
pre-loaded with ingredients, step-by-step instructions, and dietary tags — pick
one, see how to make it, log it. No setup, no empty library, no manual entry to
get started.

Add your own meals as you cook them. Tell WFD who eats with you and what they
can't have. Tap "I have…" to cook from what's already in your kitchen. Everything
syncs across the household via iCloud.

Add your own meals as you cook them. Tell WFD who eats with you and
what they can't have. Tap "I have…" to see what you can make from
what's already in your fridge. Sync across the household via iCloud.

When you find something you can almost make from your pantry, one
tap drops the missing ingredients in your shopping list. Print any
recipe to the kitchen, AirDrop it to a tablet, or send the shopping
list straight to Apple Reminders. WFD plans, decides, shops, and
cooks alongside the family — without any of the friction.

Three ways to land on tonight's meal:

- Pantry search — type what's in your fridge, see the meals you can make right now
- Eat In — meal suggestions from your library, refined by who's eating, time, mood, cuisine
- Eat Out — restaurant suggestions nearby with Yelp ratings, prices, photos, and Look Around 3D previews (Plus)

WFD remembers what your family eats:

- Your meals, your people, your household preferences
- Allergies and dietary constraints, hard-enforced — a red badge calls out when a meal has an ingredient someone you've selected reacts to
- Eating history with cook-vs-eat-out insights

Share with your household:

- iCloud household sharing — everyone sees the same queue and history
- Queue meals as a wishlist, surface them when you ask "what's tonight?"
- Weekly planning view for parents who like to plan ahead
- Identity attribution — see who queued each meal

WFD Plus — one-time, $2.99:

- Snap your fridge, pantry, or groceries — WFD reads the photo and finds meals
you can cook right now (free with your Plus trial)
- Eat Out essentials: Yelp data, ratings, prices, photos, "View on Yelp" link, Look Around 3D previews
- Apple Watch app — log meals from your wrist with the digital crown carousel
- Plan-the-Week with shopping list export to Apple Reminders +

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 4.5.1 — 2026-07-19

WFD 4.5.1 — In case you missed it.

You can now snap a photo of your fridge, pantry, or a bag of groceries and WFD
reads what's there, then shows you meals you can make right now — with what you
already have. Review the list, tap Find meals, cook. Your photo is parsed and
never stored, and it's included with your free Plus trial.

Also fixed: "eating out" restaurant results now fall back reliably for Plus
users.

### 4.5 — 2026-07-14

Capture the Fridge (Plus): Snap a photo of your fridge, pantry, a grocery bag, or even a receipt — WFD reads the ingredients and shows the meals you can make. No typing.

More reliable restaurant suggestions when eating out.

Plus small polish and stability improvements.

### 4.4 — 2026-07-02

What's new in 4.4:

— Silent photo backfill for the 40 starter meals. If a user's
starter meal has photoData == nil on launch (edge case: installed
  pre-#264 auto-fetch, or the on-add fetch silently failed), V4.4
quietly runs the same auto-fetch pipeline used elsewhere in the
app to populate the photo. One-time backfill gated by a
UserDefaults flag; sequential background execution so no launch
  performance impact.

— User-added meals and user-picked/user-uploaded photos are never
overwritten. The backfill only fills where photoData is currently
nil AND creationSource == .onboardingSeed AND the meal name still
matches a known starter (protects renames).

— No new permissions, no new third-party integrations, no changes
to the subscription model, in-app purchases, or data handling.
All existing reviewer test paths from 4.3 remain valid.

To verify the backfill: install fresh on a clean simulator/device,
delete a starter meal's photo via MealEditView, then quit and
relaunch — the photo repopulates within a few seconds via the
existing tiered fetch pipeline (TheMealDB → LLM-tuned Pexels →
category thumb → generic avatar).

### 4.3 — 2026-06-30

WFD 4.3 — Ready to cook on day one.

Every recipe in your starter library now comes with full ingredients
and step-by-step instructions, ready to cook the moment you open
the app. No setup. No empty library. No manual entry to get started.

Refine search got cleaner too — the Recipe filter pill is gone since
every meal is a real recipe now. Existing users keep all their own
customizations untouched; only the unedited starters get the upgrade.

### 4.2 — 2026-06-30

WFD 4.2 — Cook it.

Every meal now has step-by-step cooking instructions. Tap Auto-pick
in any meal and the recipe AI writes you cleanly-numbered steps
tailored to the ingredients you already have on file.

When WFD picks dinner for you, a "How to cook" card shows up
right on the suggestion — see exactly how to make it before you
even accept the pick.

NEW: Print Recipe. Share any meal as a single-page PDF — print to
the kitchen, AirDrop to a tablet, save to Notes. Full recipe goes
wherever you cook.

NEW: Pantry → Shopping List. When "What do I have" finds a meal
you can almost make, tap "Add missing to list" and those
ingredients land in your shopping list. Send to Reminders in one tap.

A new "Cook it" section in Settings runs a one-shot backfill across
your whole library so every meal gets cooking instructions in about
two minutes. Your hand-grown and URL-imported recipes are always
protected — your handwritten notes stay yours.
