Some of the rain effects sound a little tinny for example (compared to similar apps). Having said that, the ability to create your own playlists is brilliant, and that you can adjust individual sound volumes works well in balancing the overall user experience. I also like that you can play music from your iPad/iPhone music collection at the same time, and when the music finishes, the White Noise app continues. I was using it tonight; it was working fine. The all of a sudden it would go to sleep when my screen saver kicked in. I had to restart the app to clear the condition. It was mildly annoying. I realized they were in alphabetical order and scrolled down to W. I clicked on white noise and it told me I had to pay for it! I then realized I had to pay for over half of them and they only give me about 10 free noises. Well, the time has come: 1 star for continued pop-ups asking to review. F*** you and your persistant pop-up requests for a rating. ### 1/5 — Fan noise skips every 30 seconds *2019-01-13, version 2.4* At very least (I haven’t tested them all), the “Fan” sound file is not a perfect audio loop and hiccups every 30 seconds, startling you awake. There are quite a few options for various sounds. Unfortunately, the ones I tried are short sound clips set on loop that don't transition well, so you end up with a skipping sound every 30 seconds or so. There's also no straight up white noise if that's what you're looking for, but there's a fan noise that's similar. It doesn't matter though because the skipping sound destroys the usefulness of the app. ### 2/5 — Sounds loop every few mins with a notable pause. *2023-07-16, version 2.4* Not a fan. Some minor changes to allow sounds to be added as favorites, playlists etc was just lazily implemented. 2 stars for the sounds and the mixer alone. ## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated) ### 5/5 — Outstanding noise masking &sound mix *2023-08-21, version 2.4* Update (2023): Still (again?), my favorite of this type of app. The mixer function was buggy in one iteration many updates ago, but they fixed it, added new sounds, improved the look and UI, and cleaned up any bugs. This app took a step back & then two steps forward. All of my last review below still applies: (Review of an older update) I continue to love this app. One of my top five favorites out of my 1000+ apps on my iPhone and iPad. I use it for so many things. I like to use it for background for electronic music sometimes, I use it as I say below for sleeping, it's my first app that I turn on whenever I want to do something to mask out other sound or to relax me. The mixer, and saved favorite function, is one of my favorite features on this app. I can design different blends for different purposes. If you like this kind of thing, find various kinds of white noise, background sounds, nature sounds, etc. useful, helpful or healing, this is the app for you. End update Original review: I really like apps that generate background noise and sound that can be soothing as well as masking/blocking other distracting or disturbing sounds. I use these a lot sometimes to write and sometimes to help me sleep. I really like this app because it's got a lot of different varieties of sounds (both from nature - eg ocean, waterfall, rain, etc, as well as electronically generated sounds - white noise, pink noise, brown noise) and you can custom mix and match in many different ways. The mix controls (levels, balance) are very robust & sophisticated, yet simple to use. You can save your favorites both in terms of individual sounds as well as your mixes. It also allows you to layer the sounds on top of other music you might be playing. And unlike some other noise generating apps, it plays in the background. I can also imagine myself using some of this app's tools for my own music in composition.
