### 3/5 — Okay privacy app with lots of glitches

*2023-01-06, version 6.0.9*

I’ve used Wickr for years, because it’s encryption and privacy features are top notch. However, the app has lots of glitches, too. Notifications sometimes work, and sometimes they don’t. Sometimes, your account just stops working, and you have to delete your account and start a new user name. I think I’m on the seventh version of my user name! Also, occasionally the app will tell you that a message is sent, but your receiver never received the message. So you find yourself constantly using another IM service to check to make sure that your receiver has received your message. Those sorts of things are frustrating, and I hope at some point they figure out how to fix that.

**Developer response:** I'm so sorry for the trouble! We may be able to help if you can share more details with us by emailing support@wickr.com

### 4/5 — Needs GIF support (and not via keyboard)

*2020-06-16, version 5.55.9*

The only reason I don’t use this more is the lack of native gif support. I don’t use third party keyboards because of data logging, but my friends and I use gifs all the time while messaging and we don’t like that we can’t use those on here.

Also more intuitive delivered and read receipts would be nice. I’ve stood next to a friend and watched both screens while messaging to once and for all confirm what the checkmarks mean. It would be nice if that were more intuitive or obvious.

### 3/5 — Last two updates

*2020-06-12, version 5.55.9*

I downloaded this app a couple months ago and used to love how clean, simple, and effective can be used for communication. However the last two updates have really let me down. The app has been crashing, messages and pictures show that didn’t go through when in fact they did, and I’d rather the option to vibrate without the app being used, I personally don’t want the notifications options through my phone settings. Thank you for the awesome app, but please go back to what worked!

### 4/5 — Notifications with nobody there

*2019-10-16, version 5.36.1*

Been a while since I’ve posted here. I’ve updated my phone since my last review so I’m on the current iOS. The latest version of Wickr has me getting at least 4 notifications per day that doesn’t have a message attached to it. So I log in to find no activity at all. No new messages. Hopefully this is a known issue and you are working on it. Thanks.

Update:
Just letting you know that I tried it out again as you asked and even after the recent update I'm still getting dead notifications. Notifications with no messages attached. I'm only talking to one person.

After recent update I'm still getting notifications with no messages attached. I even deleted my account and created a new one to see if that would help. It didn't. I'm only talking to one person but I know this person is talking to others on this app. I have no idea how many people they are communicating with. At this point I'm thinking there’s a glitch going on when messages are sent to others...

### 5/5 — Better

*2019-02-24, version 5.4.2*

I think it is a good app for texting. I have used it and I like it. No need to use any phone number or valid email address, basically, this app does not ask for verification. However, no one knows what other user information has been taken by this app as you use it. It may take device identification number such as IMEI number.
Remind you that no digital device which connects the internet either wired or wireless is safe from hacking especially from NSA. Be your own boss and safeguard yourself. Users are thankful for the service. Thank you for your efforts and time.

### 5/5 — SECURE! Mostly reliable, sometimes buggy

*2019-01-24, version 4.68.4*

I do love and trust the Wickr app. The company puts security and privacy first on their priority list. I believe them that even if records were legally subpoenaed, there would not and could not be any message content; because it is not stored anywhere. This is one of the serious problems with regular text messages, and a crazy bad problem with Facebook Messenger. They store all content Forever! Don’t say or ask anything the least bit confidential via any FB system, ever.

I do experience intermittent service interruptions and glitches, at times, when using Wickr.
I recommend saving the Wickr ID for each of your friends/clients in your contact list, and/or taking screenshots of your Wickr user list. That way, if Wickr starts behaving badly, you can uninstall, restart your phone, and reinstall the app (and easily reconnect with your people).
I had to do that once. It did resolve whatever ghost-in-the-machine problem I was having.

Thanks for an awesome, secure, private, and Free app! I appreciate your effort to make the modern world a safer place. :)

### 5/5 — Calling could be improved

*2019-01-16, version 4.68.4*

Great app, love the security. However, I wish calls would give me more time to answer. By the time I’m realizing a call in coming through and then unlocking my phone and then unlocking the app, I’ve missed the call I wish I could answer the call directly from the lock screen like a normal call or have more time to answer the call within the app.

### 5/5 — Perfect except password recovery

*2018-12-14, version 4.68.4*

I love having a channel totally disconnected to the rest of my online identity, but perhaps consider at least having some sort of security question option. Got locked out of my account because fingerprint unlock unexpectedly turned off and had forgotten my password after never having had to type it in for months, which effectively lost me many important contacts.

The screenshot alert feature is gold - even better (if possible) would be option to manually disable screenshots within each chat so you also don’t have to deal with scolding people and trusting them to actually delete them!

### 5/5 — Sending attachments

*2018-10-18, version 4.59.7*

There is no option to go back to a conversation once you select an app you want to send an attachment from, say if you change your mind and no longer want to send the attachment, or for whatever other reason. The only option I had when this situation arose was to restart the app altogether, after I’d selected to potentially send an attachment from the “Files” app, followed by realizing I needed to share my media another way. Please fix ASAP, thanks!

### 5/5 — Best for security and privacy

*2018-09-28, version 4.55.3*

Hands down in my opinion. Don't let the open sourcey folks deter you. All features on Wikr are privacy centric. This app does not require email or phone number to set-up. The company and devs understand security. Wickr beats Signal in key areas.

[October 2018 Update] Google and Facebook shenanigans make E2EE messaging a must. For me, Wickr is better than Signal. With Wickr, the sender controls their data with two timers (better control than Signal), message recall and a zero knowledge platform. Security and Privacy are two sides of the same coin and Wickr gets that. Thank you Wickr team for your hard work!

### 2/5 — Update?

*2018-06-22, version 4.42.0*

Why oh why keep updating and adding changes. Sign in screen - used to be dark, unassuming, discreet - now it’s bright and although nice backround picture, i wish i had a choice in choosing one. Next on the sign in screen - why is there a lock icon - granted i dont have a password saved but why does it give option to take me to the saved password. This is not private because if someone gets hold of my phone, although not able to get into the Wickr, they will get into my saved passwords for other sites. This defeats the whole purpose of being encrypted and private and secure. Please remove the lock icon in sign on screen

### 3/5 — Bring Back Secure Shred

*2018-05-04, version 4.37.2*

I was initially excited to see the new revamped app hit the market, but then I discovered that the most useful feature—Secure Shred—had not only had its manual functionality removed, but also now only focused on erasing/sanitizing the data related to Wickr messaging. While it’s nice to think that’s running in the background, the app eventually times out and the screen lock comes on (which effectively shuts down the app) while waiting for the background shred to work. Manual controls allowed not only the ability to monitor progress of the operation, but also allowed users to see the before and after effects the shred had on available storage.

Please bring back the manual controls and the functionality that allows you to permanently overwrite/erase/shred deleted files (other than those are tied to Wickr specifically)! Wickr held a perfect spot in the App Store for this use case, and now it’s hard to find a suitable (and trusted) replacement.

### 5/5 — Must Have!

*2018-04-23, version 4.35.5*

I am a huge proponent of encryption, privacy protection, & anonymous communications. This is a powerful tool in that arsenal. If you combine this to deliver an expiring one-time use encrypted messenger tunnel with encrypted messages in the tunnel then it is almost perfect protection. After a few years of having this, I am still extremely happy with the product and am considering it for my business.

### 5/5 — No Reason At All not to be 5 *’s

*2018-03-19, version 4.30.1*

Here’s the only few flaws.

Apps such as signal allow the user to set an expiration timer in which is programmed per user for ever. EVEN AFTER HE USER DELETED THE MESSAGE THREAD.

On wickr unfortunately it will reset every time you delete a thread.

That being said if you want the messages to expire within a certain time that you say happen to have left it as. The chances are if you deleted the thread you now will have a message that won’t expire for 5-6 days.

Where as in the app “Signal” it will remember if you had a 1-3 hour expiration or a whole day.

The thing about this is when you communicate on a large scale it’s nonsense to keep all the open threads.

But when starting a new conversation with someone the following day it’s now once again on a 5 day expiration because you may forget to reset it.

Obviously signal wants your real phone number to use it which is dumb.

Wickr is an excellent app.

If they could please program it to expire where you left it the last time I would feel along with others who I’ve spoken to would all feel more secure about using “Wickr” to communicate.

Thank you guys for making such an App possible.
It is important even if not say breaking the law that people have their privacy.

### 1/5 — Sold Out To AMAZON.cøn aka Jefe Bezoars or as i know him Bae Zoars

*2022-07-28, version 5.108.3*

I call him Bae Zoars cause hes my Bae a he Zoars!!! Soars above all the sleeping jackrabbits schleep. Jefe and i have had it up to our necks with you rabble who dont fall low enough to properly follow his magesty

• Secure Shredder
-awesome feature that saved mine and jefe Bezoars life as well as our teams and associates lives 17 times per season on average. And Was when bug chasing was really coming into its own. Now that bug chasing has gone mainstream and is the norm hole we’ll see what comes of it as all the aids stack and pack back to sack off hack me at tools dot crom well.

### 1/5 — Hardly ever works

*2019-02-12, version 5.2.4*

Running on an iPhone 7 and the app almost never works right. Calls drop constantly in good reception or wifi connection areas. Sometimes messages don't even go through or cannot be opened. The timer for photos goes off before It is opened. This app is a disaster. Don't pay for an upgrade. It's hardly got any value free.

After the most recent update, the app no longer lets me log in with a fingerprint and it does not even send or receive messages. Thanks so much wickr for "fixing " the bugs.

### 1/5 — Not Happy

*2018-11-11, version 4.64.4*

This app is not great. I’m constantly having to close it and reopen it to get my messages. When I send a message, I always have to check to be sure it went through. About 99% of the time, they haven’t been sent. I then have to close the app, reopen it and hit “resend”. This app also doesn’t notify me I have messages even though the notification setting is set to notify. I’m always having to check to see if messages have come through. I’m currently searching for another app to use as this one is completely unreliable. Think twice before downloading.

### 1/5 — No technical support

*2018-02-12, version 4.19.6*

I have used the Wickr app for a couple of years now without issue. I now would like to terminate my account and have been unable to do so. I go into Settings>Terminate>Password>Terminate. Nothing happens. The Terminate bar is shaded gray and unable to be activated. I have sought help for this numerous times only to first be directed to the FAQs section of Wickr, then to finally be told by a support person that it is a glitch in the system. This is unacceptable not to be able to terminate an app that I voluntarily chose to download and subsequently now cannot get rid of. I would not recommend this app strictly for this reason.

### 1/5 — Newest Update is Atrocious

*2017-12-02, version 4.15.1*

Update: Important messages lost or unsent with several contacts last have forced my hand on this. Wickr was just fine before this new update. Key privacy features have now been totally scrapped, and then user interface is no longer friendly or intuitive to use. App crashes far more frequently than ever before. When typing a message, entire send window and message are obscured by keyboard pop up. This is a horrible design, a terrible UI, and a much more unsecure platform for communication. Too bad, I'd really liked it up until now.

### 1/5 — Bring it back!!!!

*2017-10-11, version 4.7.2*

Latest update:
Omg. It's so complicated to adjust settings anymore or start a new chat. Must drill down too deep. I guess I'm just getting old and like using apps to be more simple

The custom time setting is back now in the app, but it seems like it has to be set for each contact and it can't be set in the master settings as before... why?

---

You removed destruct in 10 mins and made destruct times too limited. Why take away features?

Bring back the old slider destruct time options - the new are simply a step in the wrong direction.

Also, with latest update typing disappears sometimes when you type more than one line in the message and or messages received sometimes you can only see about 1.5 lines of the the response as the lower part of the letters are hidden by the next message after.

### 1/5 — The Worst Update ever

*2017-10-04, version 4.6.3*

I really cannot understand how a company can screw up a (much hyped) upgrade as much as Wickr did. Get it together! You went from being the best to being a joke. Previous reviewers have covered much of the screwups. But here they go:
* You removed Screenshots notification. Are you kidding me Wickr? I believe even Snapchat alerts you. What a joke!
* Removed Voice messaging capability. Again, what were you thinking?
* Shredder is gone- as so is my trust on you!
* Mini locks on messages - now I have to read them all at once? Dumb idea.
* Videos much less capacity to import- seriously Wickr???
* No cancel buttons on attachments- yes, you have a recall feature. But still, give me a break!!
* Messages pop-up on preview mode - is this a joke?

I felt proud of recommending your app to others, now I feel like a fool for having done so after your upgrade!

### 1/5 — Why destroy something that was so good??

*2017-09-27, version 4.4.1*

I'm honestly too frustrated to do a full review, and others have highlighted the colossal failure that this update had brought to us better than I can. SCREENSHOT NOTIFICATIONS REMOVED??? Seriously??

Individual message locks removed, so in addition to exposing everything all at once (security issue), you can't space out what to read with different burn times.

Horrible new interface. Were you trying to make the UI "cool" or something?

I once found this the most essential secure messaging app out there, but the most recent update strips away everything that made it so great...for nothing. I was looking at using this on an enterprise level for a business but cannot given all these new changes.

I sincerely hope you take a look at these reviews and get things back to how they should be. I am sure another app will take your place if things continue this way.

### 2/5 — Message delivery, basic features are an issue

*2021-02-08, version 5.72.6*

This would be an amazing app — preferable to Signal because it doesn’t require a phone number — if not for the unreliable message delivery.

If you ever leave the app before a message completes sending, you’ll get a “message unsent error” and it’s hit or miss if that’s even accurate (sometimes they were sent). So you end up with ppl constantly sending dupes which stinks in group chats. Replying directly to a notification is equally spotty.

Chat summaries in app don’t reflect the latest message sent, only the latest opened. Also no notifications while in app from other chats other than a rumble/sound. No stickers as well.

Long way to go to be an even basic chat app in my opinion, but I’m sticking with it in hopes the above gets resolved very soon.

### 2/5 — The app interface is great but support staff...

*2020-09-08, version 5.62.6*

I sent an email about three weeks ago about a group made. I put my wikr account name on a forum site and was added to two groups with child pornography and planning/request of it from other users. I left the groups and reported it to Wikr’s email. They have said nothing back and its a little scary to think they're doing nothing about these kinds of groups. This is literal child pornography and people saying theyre using their own children to make these pictures. This absolutely needs to be addressed.

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — Wickr is amazing!

*2022-04-13, version 5.102.3*

Needed a way to communicate with people without giving out my phone number, and with Wickr, all they need is your Wickr ID. No phone number necessary.
And if you ever feel like you want to cut ties, just delete the app and start over with a new Wickr ID. The old contact info will just disappear.

### 5/5 — Have used and this app for several years without being disappointed!

*2022-02-20, version 5.98.5*

I’ve only had one issue with a prior update that was more than a minor inconvenience for me but they both fixed the issue and support responded to me quickly so I couldn’t be more satisfied!

### 5/5 — If You Care About OpSec You Have Arrived

*2021-08-04, version 5.82.9*

Best OpSec app out there. If the Feds and the military use it then you know it’s good. Don’t forget your password. Wickr cannot and does not remember it. They store zero data and end to end user encryption is a must have. The ginger bread man would have used this app for sure. #FreeR

### 5/5 — I love this application

*2021-05-20, version 5.77.8*

Been using it for some months now and I love it so much. The calls are clear and it is completely safe. However, something weird once happened with me when I connected to a new WiFi connection, the app stopped asking me for the password and was logging in immediately when I hit the app’s icon. Non of my contacts on Wickr experienced such thing. I was wondering if it means that something bad about my phone privacy? Thank you very much

**Developer response:** I'm so sorry for the trouble! We may be able to help if you can share more details with us by emailing support@wickr.com

### 5/5 — Trash

*2020-09-21, version 5.62.6*

Don’t waste your time on this piece of garbage. I took the time to fill everything out and the first time I sign in. It freezes my account for 24 hours with no explanation no reason no warning all I did was create and account and enter my
Password. They are just collecting and selling your information. 😡♈️

### 5/5 — Best secure messaging app

*2020-01-30, version 5.46.5*

I picked Wickr over Telegram and Signal because it did not require a phone number. I don’t trust an app that claims to be about your privacy and anonymity and then asks for a private number that gives away your anonymity. Wickr has impressed me beyond that. There are some bugs. Notifications do not always work as intended and with the most recent app and iOS update calls don’t ring anymore - they just make the same sound as a message. I’m sure these are being addressed and otherwise have really liked this app. Keep up the good work, keep it simple and secure!

### 5/5 — Proof of Authenticity (for me at least)

*2019-08-28, version 5.28.2*

I may not know very much about the technicalities of security, but one thing I do know for sure. Wickr WORKS.
Back in 2017 when I was raided and taken in for multiple 1st degree drug charges the department of homeland security did a phone extraction on my phone and Wickr didn’t even show up under the apps section. I had my lawyer control+F for “wickr” in the phone extraction report (5200 something pages long) and there was no results found. I tried searching for keywords that I sent under wickr and nothing came up . It’s like the app never existed, even though it was clearly on my phone . Amazing :)

### 5/5 — Photo options

*2019-07-16, version 5.22.2*

I like this app for communicating to people you should not be communicating too! Although sometimes it does not send and receive in a timely manner. That is extremely frustrating! I really wish there was a photo section that you could put a time limit or delete from other person option. Part of using this app is the fact that other people cannot get in without passwords. Obviously don’t want to save the pictures to the phone.

### 5/5 — ANNOYING

*2019-05-28, version 5.18.4*

Heard wickr was a great app so I decided to download it and couldn’t even make it past the sign up. Anytime I put in my email password then confirm password, I click submit just for nothing to happen. I’ve tried this multiple times and the same thing happened.

### 5/5 — Great app, but...

*2019-04-20, version 5.12.1*

It’s getting annoying how often they update it. On the computer, it seems like each time I run the program (once or twice a week) I get an alert that there’s yet another update (100+MB per update). The iPhone app version isn’t that bad, but still, so many updates makes me wonder if they really know what they’re doing...

On the iPhone, the app loads fast & has some nice features. I cannot comment on whether or not it’s truly rather secure or not...
