## What is WiFi Recon?

iOS has no Wi-Fi scanning API. Apple does not offer one to any app at any entitlement level, and iOS does not report signal strength for Wi-Fi at all. So this app does not list the networks around you, and nothing here pretends otherwise.

What iOS does report, to an app with precise location access, is the network you are joined to: its name, its access point address and its security type. That turns out to be enough for three things worth having on a phone.

IS THIS THE REAL NETWORK?

Your Mac knows your access points by address, because you named them there. This app checks the one you are joined to against that list and tells you plainly whether it is one of yours.

The finding worth having is the one it makes rarely: a network using a name you trust, broadcast by an access point you have never recorded. That is often just a new access point you have not named yet — and it is also what a lookalike network in a café looks like. It says both, and lets you decide.

It will not call an unfamiliar network suspicious. Away from home, nothing is in your records, and an app that warns about every coffee shop is an app you mute before the warning that matters arrives.

WHERE YOU ROAMED

Start a walk and the app logs every access point handoff with a timestamp and a coordinate. Which access point covered which part of a building, and where it handed over.

No signal strength — iOS will not give it. But a one-person site survey normally means stopping, opening a laptop, tapping a pin and closing it again. The phone has legs; the Mac has the radio.

Gaps are recorded as gaps. If the app stops being able to see the network part way through — location access withdrawn, say — the log says that stretch was not observed rather than drawing a straight line through it.

READ WHAT YOUR MAC RECORDED

Open a .wrec recording or a .wifirecon bundle from Files, iCloud Drive or AirDrop and get the signal trace, the roaming timeline, the hour-by-hour congestion grid, and the fault analysis that decides whether a slow patch was your Wi-Fi, your router or the internet beyond it.

Recordings made by WiFi Recon 1.4 and later carry the time zone they were captured in, so a recording made in Seattle reads in Seattle's hours on a phone in London. Older recordings do not carry one, and the app says so rather than quietly using your clock.

On iPad this is the better screen for it.

ONE PURCHASE, BOTH PLATFORMS

WiFi Recon for Mac and WiFi Recon for iPhone and iPad are one purchase. Buy either and you have both. There is no subscription, no in-app purchase and no account.

PRIVACY

No accounts, no analytics, no tracking, no third-party SDKs. Your access point labels sync through your own iCloud account and nowhere else. Location is used on
the device to tag where a recording or a walk happened, and is never transmitted.

REQUIRES

Precise location access, because iOS withholds the network name and access point address without it. The app explains that before the system prompt rather than after.
