## What is Wild Noise?

Wild Noise identifies birds by song and call on iPhone, iPad and Mac, and also frogs, insects and mammals. Keep a journal of what you hear and see, add your own photos and find where any species lives. Identification runs on your device and uploads nothing, no account is needed, and Pro is one purchase with no subscription.

LISTEN
• Tap Start Listening to see species appear on a live spectrogram, with names, photos and color-coded match strength
• Open a detection card for your recording, a reference song and Wikipedia; stop for a session report to share
• Offline GBIF range data leaves out species that cannot occur where and when you are. Unusual candidates stay visible and labeled
• Or identify a voice memo, video or audio file in Tools, one free a day; whole folders on Mac with Pro

YOUR JOURNAL
• Your sightings by day. Every bird Wild Noise identifies becomes one, marked as heard
• Mark it seen, add a note, replay your recording and the reference song, or read Wikipedia. Correct it with "Not right?", remove it, or discard a whole session
• "I saw a bird" logs a bird in one step: species likely near you first, or search them all. Choose seen, heard or both, the date, a note and photos

YOUR PHOTOS
• From the photo picker (no library access needed), the camera on iPhone and iPad, or a file on Mac
• An old photo brings its date and place, for past sightings
• Your newest photo becomes the bird's Wild Dex card. Visual Look Up works on your photos on iOS 17 and macOS 14 or later, where Apple offers it

THE MAP
• Search a species (free) to see where it lives this season or all year, marked common, uncommon or rare, with its photo
• Find a place from an offline city list, or with Apple's place search. Pins for your own sightings are Pro

OTUS, YOUR OWL GUIDE
• An animated owl made from the app icon. He gives a first-launch tour, cheers new species and badges, shares Wikipedia facts and reacts in the quiz. His voice, and Otus himself, can be turned off

BIRD SOUND QUIZ
• Hear a song and pick the singer from four photos
• Four levels, unlocked by scoring 4 out of 5. Easy uses local birds and is free; Medium, Hard and Very Hard are Pro. 12 quiz badges

WILD DEX, CHALLENGES AND BADGES
• Fill your collection; "Near me" shows seasonal species from common to rare
• Species cards gather your sightings, recordings, reference songs and Wikipedia
• A discovery streak, three monthly challenges for your season and hemisphere, and 29 badges

NIGHT WATCH (PRO)
• Listen overnight on iPhone or Mac on a true-black screen with dim red text, and wake to a report with an hourly timeline and recordings

ON ALL YOUR DEVICES
• iCloud sync for your journal, Night Watch reports, badges and quiz progress
• Widgets, Shortcuts and Siri on iPhone and iPad, and the Action Button on supported iPhones; the menu bar on Mac
• 25 app languages and offline common names where available

FREE AND PRO
• Free: 5 minutes of listening a day, 1 file a day, your 20 newest recordings, the journal, Wild Dex and badges, the Easy quiz, and every app icon color except the golden owl
• Pro, one payment for iPhone, iPad and Mac with no subscription: unlimited listening and files, every recording kept, Night Watch, sighting pins on the map, every quiz level, Mac folder analysis and journal export

PRIVATE BY DESIGN
• Audio is analyzed on your device and never uploaded. Sync uses your iCloud account; there is no Wild Noise server. Your photos stay on your device
• Online photos, reference songs, Wikipedia facts and the quiz need internet access

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 1.37 — 2026-10-26

Wild Noise 1.37 brings what you asked for: a journal of your sightings, your own photos and a map of where each species lives. It also introduces Otus, your owl guide.

JOURNAL AND SIGHTINGS
• A new Journal tab lists your sightings by day. Every bird Wild Noise identifies becomes one, marked as heard
• Mark it as seen, add a note, replay your recording and the reference song, or read Wikipedia. Correct it with "Not right?", remove it, or discard a whole session from its report
• "I saw a bird" logs a bird by hand in one step: species likely near you first, or search them all. Choose seen, heard or both, then the date, a note and photos

YOUR OWN PHOTOS
• Add them from the photo picker (no library access needed), the camera on iPhone and iPad, or a file on Mac
• An old photo brings its date and place, so you can log past sightings
• Your newest photo becomes the bird's Wild Dex card. Photos stay on your device and are not synced
• Visual Look Up works on your photos on iOS 17 and macOS 14 or later, where Apple offers it

THE MAP
• A full-screen Map tab. Search a species (free) to see where it lives this season or all year, in areas marked common, uncommon or rare, from offline GBIF data
• Find a place by name; pins for your own sightings are Pro

MEET OTUS
• An animated owl made from the app icon. He gives a first-launch tour, cheers new species and badges, shares Wikipedia facts and reacts in the quiz
• His babble voice, and Otus himself, can be turned off in Settings. He is silent while the microphone listens

ALSO NEW
• Seven tabs: Wild Dex, Journal, Map, Listen, Challenges, Quiz and Tools. Journal search, filter and export (Pro) moved to Tools
• Night Watch has a true-black screen with dim red text
• The Pro screen shows the price up front, one payment with no subscription, and lists what stays free
• Live listening leaves out species that cannot occur where and when you are, even with only your time zone. Zoo animals and misdated seasonal records were removed from the range data
• Quiz answers fill the screen with whole photos, the spectrogram is smoother, Listen says "No bird heard yet" after a quiet minute, and the owl in the corner is bigger

Thank you for listening with us. If Wild Noise helps you hear something new, a rating means a lot.

### 1.35 — 2026-10-18

Wild Noise now speaks 25 languages.

• New: German, Dutch, Italian, Polish, Swedish, Danish, Norwegian, Finnish, Czech, Japanese, Traditional Chinese, Korean, Hebrew, Turkish and Irish
• Local common names for birds and other wildlife in each new language, offline
• Choose the language in Settings, or let Wild Noise follow your device
• On Mac, the Identify a recording drop zone is now translated too

Thank you for listening with us. If Wild Noise helps you hear something new, a rating means a lot.

### 1.30 — 2026-10-02

Wild Noise 1.30 is our biggest update yet: a brand-new look, a quiz to learn birds by ear, overnight listening, and a collection of every species to fill. Here is everything that's new.

A NEW LISTEN SCREEN
• A calm picture of a great tit by a lake, by day or by moonlight to match your appearance, and one big Start Listening button
• Listening happens right there: a live spectrogram, a level meter, and each new species sliding in at the top of the list
• Every detection shows its photo, its names and how sure the match is, as a percentage in green, orange or grey
• Tap a bird for its detection card: a large photo, the confidence explained, when and how often you heard it, your recording, the reference song and Wikipedia
• When you stop, a summary of the session, ready to share as a picture

ONLY WHAT LIVES NEAR YOU
• Species never recorded where you are at this time of year are now left out, using GBIF biodiversity data built into the app
• Your place comes from your approximate location, a place you choose, or simply your time zone, and it never leaves your device

HEAR IT AGAIN, AND SET IT RIGHT
• Wild Noise keeps five seconds of each species' best moment, so you can compare your own recording with a reference song
• Not right? Pick what it really was, or say it was something else, and your journal, badges and challenges follow

BIRD SOUND QUIZ
• Learn the birds around you by ear: hear a song, then pick the singer out of four photos
• Five songs per quiz, with replay, skip, and a chime and confetti for every right answer
• Four levels, each opened by scoring 4 out of 5: Easy starts with the common birds where you live, and Very Hard brings in birds from all over the world
• Easy is free; Medium, Hard and Very Hard come with Wild Noise Pro
• 12 quiz badges for right answers, answers in a row and the birds you know by ear

THE WILD DEX, CHALLENGES AND BADGES
• Every species Wild Noise can name, as a collection to fill, with "Near me" showing what lives around you this season, from common to rare
• Tap any species for its local status, your discoveries and recordings, a reference song and Wikipedia
• Your journal now lives in the Wild Dex, with your most-heard species and today's discoveries
• A discovery streak, three monthly challenges chosen for your season and hemisphere (the dawn chorus in spring, crickets in late summer, owls in autumn), and 29 badges to earn

NIGHT WATCH (PRO)
• Leave your iPhone or Mac listening overnight: it stops at the time you choose and leaves a morning report with every species, an hour-by-hour timeline and your recordings
• Notifications stay quiet all night, and one summary arrives when it ends

IDENTIFY A RECORDING
• Analyse a voice memo, the sound of a video or any audio file, one free every day, or send one to Wild Noise from the share sheet
• On Mac, drag a file in, or analyse whole folders with Pro

ON ALL YOUR DEVICES
• Your journal, Night Watch reports, badges and quiz progress now sync across iPhone, iPad and Mac with iCloud
• Wild Noise Pro unlocks on every device signed in to your Apple ID, and Restore Purchase now tells you exactly what it found
• Start listening from a Home Screen or Lock Screen widget, Shortcuts, the Action Button or Siri: just say "Start listening with Wild Noise"

• A map of your discoveries (Pro)
• Free listening is now 5 minutes a day, up from 1
• Offline common names for every species in all 10 languages

STILL PRIVATE
• Audio is analysed on your device and never uploaded, and sync goes through your own iCloud account: there is no Wild Noise server at all

Thank you for listening with us. If Wild Noise helps you hear something new, a rating on the App Store means a lot.
