## What is Windrose Radar?

Check rain radar, compare forecasts and plan time outdoors. Windrose brings everyday weather, optional alerts and specialist tools together on iPhone and iPad.

EVERYDAY WEATHER — FREE
• A 7-day forecast, 12 hours of detail and modeled current conditions.
• Observed rain radar with a timeline you can scrub, where coverage is available.
• Estimated rain timing and a one-hour rain chart in 15-minute forecast steps.
• A standard 30-minute Focus Window suggestion, checked against a full hourly forecast block.
• UV, sunrise, sunset and modeled air quality where available.
• Home Screen and Lock Screen widgets, plus rain Live Activities.
• Current location and two saved places, Home/Work shortcuts, backup export and private iCloud place sync.

Official warnings remain free in Hong Kong, the United States and participating European and nearby countries. Check the affected area, issuing authority and valid times. Optional notifications depend on permission, connectivity and iOS background scheduling; emergency delivery is not guaranteed. European warning notifications cover red-level warnings; other supported warnings remain visible in the app.

MORE DETAIL WITH WINDROSE PRO
• Up to 16 forecast days, 48 hourly hours and a six-hour rain chart.
• Custom Focus Window duration, rain, gust and temperature preferences.
• Experimental future radar: motion estimates from available observed frames, up to three hours ahead, with decreasing reliability over time.
• Infrared satellite cloud imagery where coverage is available.
• An interactive pressure map with isobars, highs and lows, illustrative flow and supported tropical-cyclone tracks. Pressure readings are sampled or interpolated model estimates.
• Marine forecasts for waves, swell, sea state, sea temperature, currents, wind and gusts where available.
• Aviation reports and tools: METARs, TAFs, reporting airports, SIGMET information, modeled winds aloft and a density-altitude calculator.
• Unlimited saved places and no ads.

MAKE IT YOURS
Choose your units and appearance, then reorder or hide dashboard cards. Forecast validity and download times are shown separately, with clear messages when data is missing, stale or unavailable.

Coverage varies by location and product. Use official warnings and briefings for safety decisions. Marine and aviation tools provide awareness, not navigation or flight-planning authority. The app interface, widgets and Live Activities support 50 languages. Official narratives and place names may retain their supplied language.

SUBSCRIPTIONS
Pro is available monthly or annually. The App Store shows current prices, billing periods and any introductory offer you are eligible for before purchase. Subscriptions renew automatically unless canceled. Manage or cancel in your Apple Account settings at least 24 hours before renewal or trial end. Restore purchases in the app.

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 1.6.0 — 2026-10-15

Now available in 50 languages, with improved city search, widgets and Live Activities.

### 1.5.0 — 2026-10-09

Windrose has a clearer weather dashboard with Daylight, Twilight and Quiet appearances, plus Focus Window planning for time outside. The standard suggestion is free; Pro adds custom preferences.

This update fixes intermittent Marine and Aviation loading, improves location switching and cached forecasts, and makes place selection easier at large text sizes. Radar and Pressure controls, map attribution and source details are cleaner.

Saved places gain private iCloud sync, backup export and recovery. Weather, warnings, widgets and Live Activities show missing or stale data more clearly.

Pro plan selection and purchase recovery are clearer. Membership shows verified purchase and renewal information, and advertising choices remain optional.

### 1.4.0 — 2026-08-28

Hurricanes, satellite for the whole world, and warnings across Europe.

Official warnings now cover most of Europe. Windrose answered for Hong Kong and the United States only, so across 39 more countries the feature this app leads with had nothing to say. It now carries MeteoAlarm, the European warning service run by the national weather services themselves. Because their published areas are broad, each warning names its own area and says it is near you - never that it is exactly where you are - and points you to your national service for the precise area and timing.

Windrose now tracks Atlantic and Pacific hurricanes. Storm tracks and arrival estimates came from the Japan Meteorological Agency, which covers the western Pacific - so anywhere in the Americas, the storm card could never fire. It now also draws on the US National Hurricane Center, covering the Atlantic, the eastern Pacific and the central Pacific. A hurricane is named a hurricane and a typhoon a typhoon, because those are not the same word.

Satellite now covers the whole world. Our previous provider stopped serving satellite imagery altogether, and the replacement left Europe, Africa and the Middle East with nothing. Windrose now adds EUMETSAT's Meteosat satellites alongside NOAA GOES and JMA Himawari - so cloud cover is there wherever you are, apart from the far polar regions, which no geostationary satellite can see.

Warnings that tell you when they don't know. An empty warnings section used to look exactly like "nothing is in force" - even when the check had simply failed. On a safety screen that is the wrong thing to do, so Windrose now says when it could not check, and offers to try again. Aviation got the same fix: a failed SIGMET check no longer reports a green all-clear.

Warnings now appear in every mode. They showed only on the main weather screen, so Marine and Aviation could open with a calm summary while a signal or warning was in force for the same place. All three now lead with them.

Severe-weather alerts no longer repeat. Switching between saved places could wipe the record of what had already been sent, so coming back to a place could re-send an alert you had already read.

The widget no longer shows sample weather. With no data yet it used to fill in with placeholder conditions for another city, which looked exactly like a real reading. It now asks you to open the app.

Also fixed: warnings could appear for a neighbouring region when the location lookup failed; a day with a high rain chance could still show a sunny icon; Marine showed sea heights in metres even for readers set to feet; and a completed purchase could briefly report itself as failed.

### 1.3.5 — 2026-08-14

Rain alerts you can trust.

We rebuilt the rule that decides when Windrose is allowed to tell you it is going to rain. An alert now only fires for rain that is close enough to time accurately and heavy enough to be worth an umbrella - which means roughly two-thirds fewer alerts than before, and the ones that arrive mean something.

The 7-day forecast no longer hides. A day that shows a thunderstorm or drizzle icon now always shows its rain chance beside it, so you can tell a storm you will feel from one you will not.

We also gave some of the free tier back. Free returns to a 7-day forecast, and you can save two places again instead of one - alongside your current location, as always.

Everything else in free is unchanged: the live radar loop, the rain countdown for your spot, current conditions, the next 12 hours, widgets and the rain Live Activity. Every official severe-weather warning stays free for everyone. That will not change.

Windrose Pro still covers the forecast side: the rain forecast on the radar, the full 6-hour rain timeline, satellite cloud layers, the 16-day forecast, 48 hours of hourly detail, the pressure map, Marine and Aviation modes - and no ads.

### 1.3.4 — 2026-08-11

Windrose Pro now covers the forecast side of the app: the rain forecast on the radar, the full 6-hour rain timeline, satellite cloud layers, the 16-day forecast and 48-hour hourly detail.

The free tier is now ad-supported - a single banner on the weather screen, never on the radar, and an optional video you can choose to watch for a day of extra features. Windrose Pro removes every ad.

Free keeps what it has always been for: the live radar loop, the rain countdown for your spot, current conditions, a 3-day forecast, widgets and the rain Live Activity. Every official severe-weather warning stays free for everyone. That will not change.

Also in this release:
- Every Pro lock now tells you exactly what it unlocks, and opens on the feature you were reaching for
- Yearly's free trial is stated correctly everywhere (Monthly has no trial)
- Fixed a paywall that could get stuck loading, and cancelling a purchase no longer looks like an error
