Excellent app for kids

We downloaded the Wingmate app because my daughter has a keen interest in Australian native birds. The App is so easy for her to use, she can now ID a huge number of bird and we use the app on our walks with her in our local national park. The platform is a wonderful way to engage and enjoy native bird life with budding young bird watchers! 5 stars!

This absolutely made our day! We're so thrilled that your daughter is enjoying Wingmate and discovering Australian native birds with you. There's nothing better than inspiring the next generation of Nature Lovers! It sounds like you're creating some wonderful memories together on those national park walks. Thanks for the 5 stars and for sharing your birding adventures with us. Happy exploring!

AI is taking the piss

Seriously I took a photo of a Kookaburra nice and easy to identify and AI said it was a Masked Owl ! 🤣🤣

Response from developer

Haha,😄 Thanks for the heads up - getting the whole bird in frame usually helps, but yeah, we're still working out the kinks. Feel free to send us that pic if you want - always helps us get better!

Cute app but not a fan of the AI images

Downloaded this app as an eBird user looking to see what difference it brings - I really like the aesthetic of the app and the way the checklist is done with photos, makes it feel similar to a Pokédex and would be a lot better for people new to birding who aren't familiar with every bird's appearance (or anyone who prefers photos and icons over text). A good portion of the app seems to be work-in-progress so it would be cool to see that come to fruition. I am hoping the randomly-generated usernames are part of the progress and not permanent! Overall pretty promising concept.

Unfortunately I do have complaints with the AI images used in the app - I'm against image generation as an artist, but even that aside it is a poor decision for an identification app. My profile picture is a generated image of a falcon with too many toes that doesn't seem able to be changed. When you click on a Hatchling Feature, there's a generated bird that doesn't even look like a real bird. It will come off as tacky to those who notice it and will confuse those who don't. My qualm with the AI image generation is unfortunately big enough that I won't be using the app if it's kept.

I do hope the developer/s take this into account and consider removing the AI images. You have a really good concept here and that ruins it. I am in a large group of birders who would consider this a dealbreaker as well.

Response from developer

Thanks so much for this detailed feedback and for reaching out! Really appreciate you taking the time to share your insights and chat with us. We've been phasing out the AI-generated images and replacing them with assets from our own graphic design team throughout the app. We've also built in safeguards internally to prevent these images from being used as placeholders going forward. Funny enough, that falcon with extra toes was actually from a third party and marked as not AI-generated - we'll be more careful with our asset selection going forward. We've swapped it out with unlockable profile photos. The random usernames were indeed temporary and that's been updated too! We love that you get the Pokédex concept for new birders - that's exactly what we were going for. Thanks again for the honest review - feedback like this is what helps us build something the birding community actually wants!

Amazing App

Love using this app. Lots of photos of the birds. It is also easy to record your sightings of birds. It is fun and informative.

Response from developer

Thanks so much! So glad you're enjoying the photos and finding it easy to log your sightings. That's exactly what we were hoping for - making birding more fun and accessible! Happy spotting!
