## What is Wings & Whistles?

Wings & Whistles
Meet the birds around you.

Learn birds by ear, the gentle way.

Wings & Whistles is a listening course for total beginners. Short lessons introduce you to one bird at a time, starting with the ones already singing outside your door, and gradually opening up to everything from woodpeckers to marsh birds to the quiet voices of dusk.

Sound ID stays free. Premium removes the daily lesson limit so you can keep learning at your own pace.

How it works
Step outside. Press record. The app names the bird and teaches you its voice so you'll know it next time. Every bird you meet joins your Field Guide. Every lesson you finish deepens your ear.

A path, not a pile
Most birding apps hand you a thousand species and wish you luck. Wings & Whistles gives you a trail. Start with Right Out the Door, the birds already singing near home. Continue into city edges, family lookalikes, marsh voices, woodland singers, and the quiet calls of dusk.

Sound journeys, not flashcards
Our lessons are immersive. You're not drilling a quiz. You're standing in a marsh at dawn, or walking a forest edge at golden hour. Watercolor birds fade in and out. A narrator points out what to listen for. Ambient soundscapes carry you through. You don't memorize birdsong here. You live with it for a few minutes at a time, and it sticks.

From first listen to mastered
Every bird you meet moves through three stages. Learned, when you've studied its song. Heard, when you've caught it in the wild. Mastered, when you know it cold.

Also in the app

Flight Crew group challenges for camps, classrooms, families, and nature groups.

Milestone quests that progress while you walk.

Songs and calls for 400+ species.

A Discovery Log that fills in as you explore.

Friend Challenges to compare your birds with people you know.

Made by a small team who believes the world isn't as quiet as it sounds.

*2026-05-15, version 4.2.1*

You don’t have to be a birder in khaki pants and shirt with binoculars around your neck to enjoy this. It is a real fun app for just sitting in the yard with a coffee or a cocktail and answering the question “what the heck kind of bird Is doing that?” I love it.

### 5/5 — Love learning about birds while walking my dog

*2026-03-11, version 4.1.4*

The app is easy to use and filled with lots of knowledge. Also love learning about the various birds that are around me (more than I expected). I automatically open the app when I hear birds around me and am surprised when I learn that I’m hearing a new bird. Looking forward to using the app while hiking. Still trying to capture the local owl at night when I walk my dog.

### 5/5 — Fun app

I love this app, but then I love birds. Fun year round but especially during migration. I now recognize many bird calls which I hadn’t previously. Fun competing with friends.

This app makes it fun go collect and listen to birds. I actually have started noticing more bird calls and I love finding new types. It even works in the loud city environment!
