### 3/5 — Great but bugs in audio

*2020-09-27, version 4.3.7*

Audio playback is getting cut off; only the end of a word or sentence is heard.

I have purchased the Enhanced Audio add-on.

I think the free iOS system voices for Japanese text to speech sound better. Can we have an option to just use those instead?

Will update review after this bug is fixed.

### 3/5 — 安定しない

*2020-06-28, version 4.3.3*

職場がスマホ持ち込み禁止なのでアップルウォッチで漢字を検索するためにこのアプリを購入しました。上手く動けば大変満足なのですが、しょっちゅう検索しなくなり、アドオンの復元をもとめられます。
iOS13.5.1、watchOS6.2.6で、最新の状態です。

### 2/5 — Apple Watchで全く使えない

*2019-09-26, version 4.2.1*

Apple Watchでの使用目的でアドオンを購入しましたが、Apple Watchで検索すると検索中のまま進まなくなります。使用環境はiOS13.1とwatchOS6.0です。早期改善お願いします。

### 4/5 — Great app

*2014-10-29, version 2.4.3*

Hi this is a great app and I have used it for years but since the recent IOS 8 update I haven't been able to use it. It doesn't open. Please fix this soon please.

Thank you

### 4/5 — Not opening

*2014-10-25, version 2.4.3*

Cannot open since updated to IOS 8.0.

### 3/5 — iOS 8

*2014-09-25, version 2.4.3*

になってから アプリが開けません アップデート お願いいたします

### 4/5 — なかなか良さそう。

*2013-09-30, version 2.4.2*

面白い。まだ十分使ってないが、良さそうである。ただ、「々」は出てこない？書き方が悪いせいか。また、「糀」を書くと、途中で正解が表示されるが、最後まで書くと正解が候補から外れてします。ちょっと不思議だ。これから、どんどん改良してより良いものに進化して欲しい。期待してます。

### 4/5 — Works great

*2013-06-04, version 2.4.1*

Easily worth $20 if you're not a complete noob at kanji and can draw the radicals with the proper stroke order. If you *are* a complete noob, I recommend Skritter. I only wish it were easier to look up words formed from multiple kanji more easily. Thankfully at least you can copy+paste individual kanji into Denshi Jisho. Slow, but it works. I also wish there were a "by Radical" function like Denshi Jisho, but without having to search for the radicals visually. Then it would be 5 stars.

### 4/5 — Excellent considering it's one of the few apps that has kanji recognition

*2013-05-06, version 2.4.1*

Kanji recognition works only if you know the correct stroke order, which is very difficult at times.
Would prefer an upgrade where the app can recognize kanji by its shape rather than number and order of strokes, just like in a denshi jisho.
It can be annoying having to switch between English and romaji when doing a word search.

Great to have verb conjugations and examples.

### 4/5 — Great App

*2013-04-11, version 2.4.1*

This is a great app for finding kanji and the dictionary aspect is great as well. My only wish is that it had a deeper bank of ancient japanese kanji.

### 5/5 — The best Japanese app

*2013-04-10*

Seriously a great app if you're commuted to learning Japanese

### 5/5 — Excelente Diccionario

*2013-04-09, version 2.4.1*

Muy buena traducción de romaji. Lo adoro

### 5/5 — Perfect for me!

*2013-03-27, version 2.4.1*

I'm a Japanese national, and speak the language fluently, but since I've been in the U.S. since age 5, kanji throws me off every now and then. This is a perfect tool for the likes of me.

### 5/5 — Mención.

*2013-03-25, version 2.4.1*

Me ha ayudado mucho a leer y traducir. Muy recomendable.

### 5/5 — Sensational

*2013-03-07, version 2.4.1*

Really good app. Camera recognition is improving with each update

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — Application Does not Work with iOS8

*2014-10-13, version 2.4.3*

If you are running iOS8, I would strictly advice you not to spend money on this application. Currently (12/10/2014) it crushes on iOS8.
Rating on iOS8: very bad!!

### 1/5 — Crash with iOS8

*2014-09-29, version 2.4.3*

No way to use this app since iOS8. It crashes. Need update and bug fix asap.

### 1/5 — Seriously lacking most basic instructions

*2013-12-31, version 2.4.3*

This app provides no instructions whatsoever with regard to how to use it. There are symbols to tap on whose functions are completely unexplained. Very frustrating and annoying. Do not waste your money on this product. Choose an app whose creators at least care enough about their work and the consumer to provide adequate, user- friendly instructions.

### 1/5 — 金返せ！

*2013-12-31, version 2.4.3*

手書きでの漢字認識能力が低すぎて使い物にならない。
これで2000円はハッキリ言って詐欺！
50%offで1000円だったが、
1000円でもあり得ない！！
インストールしてやった親父に文句言われるは
1000円で使えないアプリ買わされるは…
まだ無料アプリの方が10000倍使える！

### 1/5 — over priced and not worth it

*2013-04-11, version 2.4.1*

Sadly, this app only recognizes kanji if its written in perfect stroke order and with really neat writing. For twenty bucks? What did I just buy? I'm assuming most people who use the app are just learning Japanese, so probably don't know perfect stroke order! Also the app layout is difficult to navigate to see kanji meaning in hiragana. Please make an update to make kanji more recognizable based on the end product rather than stroke order...otherwise I sadly just wasted my money and want a refund!

### 1/5 — I really hate the gui/bugs

*2011-01-22, version 1.9*

Until today this was the only app that had strokes recognition on iphone. It was always painful to use. lots of copy/paste opetations, bugs, slowness. Fortunelly Midori dictionary came out today for the iPhone. It works perfectly. It has much more features including stroke recognition, names database, good ui, etc. I can finally get rid of WishoTouch today:)

### 1/5 — まったく使えない

*2011-01-06, version 1.9*

ここまで使えないとは。恐ろしいくらい漢字の種類が少ない。その割に高すぎる。酷すぎるアプリだ！

### 1/5 — Overpriced! Fooled on this one!

*2010-10-02, version 0*

It is very good for searching for Kanji through writing, but that is it. You have to pay extra for examples. You have too touch directly on the arrows to get a definition and when you want to hear a word it says it in English. What a waste. You look use the dictionary to find a Japanese word and it vocalizes the word you typed in to search. ONLY WASTE YOUR MONEY if you really NEED a way to look up Kanji fast.

### 1/5 — 使いにくい

*2010-05-14, version 0*

Update: Upon further use I've decided this app is pretty good, there are a lot of good features. However, they are poorly explained and the price is still high. Work on the recognition and the app will be a steal.

UpdateUpdate: So, I've gotted used to simply using the radical lookup. It's quite good I was going to up the stars on this review, but then I downloaded the new modules...... The examples are great, worth 5 bucks. However, the OCR doesn't work at all. I've tried all kinds of different fonts, about 20 kanji in all and just one has been right. I thought it might be good for train stations with no Furigana, but it still has a long way to go.

UpdatedUpdateUpdate: Latest version crashes all the time. I have no trouble with ant other app.

### 1/5 — Lacks too many features to be of use and it's the most expensive app of the type

*2010-03-26, version 0*

* Handwriting pad does not recognize hiragana or katakana
* You can only use handwriting to write a single kanji, you can't write complete words to search.
* The single kanji you can write, can not be used to search for words either
* Word search only works with romaji, any type of japanese will fail to come up with matches
* Interface is difficult to understand, not sure where to tap

The only good thing would be the amount of results that come up when you write a kanji using the handwriting pad. I bought this because I thought I could write entire words using kanji and kana with handwriting. This does Not work for this purpose at all.

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — Excellent

*2020-06-23, version 4.3.3*

I’ve used several dictionary apps, and this one is hands down the most comprehensive for kanji lookup. When drawing, you do usually need to use correct stroke order, but I think this is not a major issue for serious students as proper order reinforces learning. The add ons are very beneficial, and well designed, like the handwriting input has a nice hand-drawn feel, flash cards are uniquely presented, and examples are rather good and often fresh. The developer is very caring about the app and is responsive. This app is one of my key learning tools. Absolutely worth the investment. Highly recommended!

### 5/5 — Helpful

*2020-02-13, version 4.3.3*

The example sentences are helpful to understand the vocabulary well.

### 5/5 — 2017 updates

*2017-12-15, version 4.0*

The app looks very nice and modern, especially with the dark theme. Overall very nicely presented and professionally made. Now it would be fantastic if there was a SRS flashcard add-on.

### 5/5 — Well made and very accurate app

*2017-09-22, version 3.9.5*

I have had this app for years now and it has served me very well. I don't use the dictionary all that much, I'm more about the handy kanji writing dictionary- perfect for on the fly readings- no knowledge of radicals needed at all, just simply write the character out in the correct way and you'll get the apposite hit before you know it! This is what makes this app worth the price in my opinion- it's a cut above. Purchase it without any fears, it will most definitely serve you well, whether you have an advanced or rudimentary knowledge of Japanese and Kanji characters alike!

### 5/5 — An excellent Kanji dictionary for learners of all levels

*2014-11-09, version 3.0*

I’ve been using this app for a long time now and the latest release has improved an already great app enormously.

The user interface has been simplified at the same time as extending the functionality and they have gone a great job of making the iPhone and iPad interfaces feel consistent while still making use of the resolution available on each platform.

It’s easy to search for Kanji by multiple radicals and also using handwriting recognition, although it’s strict about the stroke order rather than effectively doing OCR of the final result, even though it has an OCR module for recognising individual characters using the camera. It has lots of compounds and examples as well as including things like verb conjugations. That makes it a great tool for Japanese learners of all levels.

I bought it such a long time ago that I’ve forgotten the cost of the app, but I remember it not being cheap, especially if you add in the in app purchases of the extra modules, but given the use I’ve had out of it over that time, it’s been well worth it. Highly recommended.

### 5/5 — So useful

*2014-09-19, version 2.4.3*

At first when I was still learning how to use this app I thought it was nothing big but once I figured it out I was so happy! Not having it is not an option since it helps me with my studies soooo much!

They updated iOS and now I have to wait for the app to update since I can't use it due to it crashing after I start it up... I hope it is updated soon!!!

### 5/5 — Outstanding, but...

*2013-12-21, version 2.4.3*

Great program that I highly recommend, but it has no instructions. So, I'm afraid it may take a while to figure out how to do everything. But once you figure it all out, you'll discover how powerful this wonderful program is.

### 5/5 — An Essential Tool

*2013-12-09, version 2.4.3*

As a freelance translator, I usually have digital files to work with. For cases when I need to translate from hard copy or PDF and can't just copy and paste, this app is a lifesaver for fast, accurate kanji and vocabulary lookup.

### 5/5 — Thanks

*2013-12-08, version 2.4.3*

This program is the best for my!!!

### 5/5 — Excellent Japanese Kanji App + Dictionary

*2013-04-13, version 2.4.1*

Considering the price of this app, this is an extremely good Kanji App, with dictionary and even pronunciation aid functionality. The Kanji recognition software by writing on the screen however, is reliant on the user's knowledge of stroke order, making it more restrictive to users who are at least have some basic knowledge of Kanji - especially in comparison to other apps with Kanji writing input recognition that can recognise Kanji irrespective of stroke order. But overall, great value for money. Highly recommended!
