## What is Witbound?

It was never you. Audiobooks give your eyes nothing to do, so your mind wanders and you lose the thread.

Witbound lines up the real audiobook you already own with the real ebook text, word by word, so your eyes follow every word as the narrator speaks it. Not a robot voice, and not a machine's guess at the words. The actual book, correctly spelled and laid out, moving in time with the narration. That is what makes it work for dyslexia, ADHD, and reading in another language, where the words have to be right.

Everything happens on your phone. Your books never leave the device, and there is no account and no tracking.

Bring your own epub, PDF, m4b or mp3, or connect your Audiobookshelf server. Popular books are ready in seconds.

Your first book syncs free. After that, Witbound Plus is a one-time purchase that unlocks your whole shelf for good. No subscription, no renewals, no recurring charges. A single payment to your Apple Account, yours to keep.

### 5/5 — Amazing app!

*2026-08-25*

Decent price for an app that does a great job at what it’s supposed to do.

**Developer response:** Thank you!

### 4/5 — Mck

*2026-08-13*

Will buy and recommend to friends if you add download from my computer via 192.168.1.blah. I listen to audiobooks every day and would like to read along for history books and proper names, dates etc. much easier to dl from computer.

**Developer response:** thanks, this is on the list. pulling an epub and audiobook over from a computer on the same network is exactly the kind of thing i want to add next. until then the Files app, AirDrop from a Mac, or an Audiobookshelf server all get books in. if you try it with a history book and the names or dates don't land, email me at hello@witbound.app

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 1.8.3 — 2026-09-09

Highlight the exact words you want: in a book, open the share menu, choose Select a passage, then tap a sentence or drag across the words to keep.

"Receive from your Mac" now checks your iPhone is actually reachable before it says Ready, and shows exactly what to fix if your Mac can't find it.

### 1.8.2 — 2026-09-07

Community sync now recognises the same book even when the files aren't byte-identical — a friend's copy from Drive or AirDrop, a different edition's epub, or audio that was re-encoded.

Project Gutenberg books: the last chapter now reads along too — the licence at the end was being counted as unread text.

### 1.8.1 — 2026-09-06

Add a book straight from your ebook server: the add menu now has "From Calibre, BookOrbit, Grimmory…". Pick the ebook from your catalogue, then say where the audiobook is: a file on this iPhone, Audiobookshelf, or Plex. Most ebook servers hold books, not audio, so Witbound asks for the audio second. When the same catalogue entry also holds the audiobook, on BookOrbit, Calibre or Grimmory, Witbound now takes both from that server, with the login you already gave it.

Adding an audiobook from Files with no ebook now offers to get the ebook from your library before writing the book from the narration.

Audiobookshelf and Calibre imports are more honest: Kobo .kepub books open; an ebook whose name lies about its format is read for what it really is, before anything tries to open it; an ebook the server can't actually hand over says so instead of quietly transcribing; Kindle-format ebooks show a one-line note in the list; catalogue rows show which format they will add; and audiobooks split into several files on the server always play in order, under the names your server gives them.

Split audiobooks: a part Witbound can't play is named instead of being quietly left out of the book; a damaged or incomplete part is refused by name — the name your own server uses — instead of producing a shorter book; copy-protected Audible parts are named as such; and for a rip in separate CD1/CD2 folders, pick the folder that holds the discs and they play in order.

Add an audiobook that comes as several files at once: pick all the parts in the file picker and Witbound stitches them into one book, with a chapter for each part. Books from Audiobookshelf that come in several files get chapters the same way now.

Audiobookshelf: an ebook in a Kindle format (azw3, mobi) that iPhone can't read no longer fails the import. Witbound tells you why and offers to write the book from the audio instead. Error messages across the app now say what actually went wrong instead of a generic failure.

### 1.8.0 — 2026-09-04

Witbound Plus is a one-time purchase only now: pay once and keep it. The monthly plan is no longer offered. If you already have one, nothing changes for you; it keeps running until you cancel it.

Sleep timer: extend by 15 minutes from the countdown, pick any length from 1 to 180 minutes, or stop at the end of the chapter. It now counts only while the book is playing, and you can set it again straight after it fires.

Plex: sign in with your Plex account, or enter a server address, and import audiobooks from your music library, then pair them with an ebook from Calibre, Grimmory, BookOrbit or a file.

Calibre / OPDS import now lists Grimmory and BookOrbit, tested against both.

Word sync now supports Polish and other languages on Apple's dictation engine, alongside the ten on the newer engine.

Fixed: a second sleep timer could not be set after the first one fired.

### 1.7.0 — 2026-09-02

New ways to read along — all optional, in the reader's settings while a book is open:

- Choose what lights up as the narrator reads: a word, a phrase, a sentence, or a whole paragraph.
- Reading window: dim everything except the lines you're on, so your eyes don't wander.
- Continuous scroll: read by scrolling instead of turning pages — the text still follows the voice.
- Bold word-starts: emphasise the beginning of each word to help your eyes move faster.
- Lead the narrator: light the next word a beat early, or a few words at a time, to read slightly ahead.

Everything is off to begin with, so your reader looks exactly as it did until you switch something on. Your place is kept in both page and scroll modes.
