### 4/5 — Notification Bug, Otherwise Solid

*2026-07-03*

This has been my favorite tracking app to date, but there seems to be a bug with the notifications.

I had three projects and moved two to inactive. This did not shut off notifications for those two like I assumed it would, but I was able to find them and shut them off manually. I hit save and thought that would fix things. The notification time for them used to be 8 AM and the active project still is.

However, it did not shut off their notification, it just moved it to 6 AM. I went back into the project and confirmed there are no set notifications. Further, it did not send an 8 AM notification for the active project. Last time this happened I had to fully delete and remake a project to fix it, which shouldn’t be necessary.

**Developer response:** Thank you for the review and for brining this to our attention. We are in the middle of a fairly sizable update regarding better notification and tailoring the relevant information that is shown to you for your specific needs. We are looking to get that update out as soon as possible. Thanks again, and if you have any questions or concerns reach out to us at contact@writerdepot.org

### 3/5 — Unnecessary cost

*2025-11-01, version 4.4.2*

I really liked the app until I had to pay just to add a session.

### 3/5 — Can we just have one free book and then the others are to be bought?

*2025-07-06, version 4.3.2*

If you’re just a starting out author (and a young one like myself) you don’t have the money to pay for this. It seems extremely helpful and what not but if we could just have one free book then maybe we can get that book on the market and THEN we will be able to pay for future books when we’re rich and famous. Pleaseeee just one free book???🥺🙏🏻

### 2/5 — Frustrating

*2025-05-12, version 4.1.0*

I’m new to the app.. it’s not user friendly or intuitive to use..it keeps stalling. I’ll be giving it a miss

### 4/5 — Review after recent update

*2025-05-11, version 4.1.0*

I’ve been using this app for years (ever since it was launched). It’s always been slick and easy to use. The recent update gives the app a much needed glow-up and provides a lot more stats, however the heavy use of AI images sours the user experience somewhat. AI is everywhere and there’s no getting away from the fact it’s taking the writing world by storm (rightly or wrongly) If you can ignore the AI images then it’s a brilliant app for tracking word counts and your progress during a first draft etc.

### 4/5 — Great App but could use more features for tracking

*2025-02-22*

I started using this app back in November and recently started to reuse it again. I really like how I can keep track of the phases in my writing, but I wish there was a way to select which phases actually go into the novel’s word count.

Personally I like to keep track of everything I write, including my outline words. Sadly when I have the outline selected and write down my words it adds it to my novel’s word count total. I tried to see if there was a way to toggle it off for the outlining phase since I don’t count those as actual words towards completion, but there wasn’t a proper way to do it.

I also noticed there was a “paused” section when I’m updating my session, but I’ve never gotten it to work which is a shame. I really like to keep track of exact time spent writing and normally I’ll write for fifteen minutes, take a ten minute break, then write for another fifteen. I was going to add that time into the “paused” section but it seems like it’s just for show and doesn’t actually work.

Overall though I do enjoy this app. It helps keep track of time, the phases of writing (including research, outlining, writing, and editing), and allows you to have several projects going at once with customizable goals for each one. The app is easy to use and it’s quick to add in sessions so you’re not fumbling around on the app for too long just to update your writing. The things I’d like improved upon are probably more just personal issues.

**Developer response:** Thank you for the review, it is really insightful and helpful.

We are getting really close to releasing a new version where we address a lot of these issues while making the app even more useful. The dev team was literally just discussing the phases and how to handle them in the new version this morning, so we’ll be sure to pass this onto them.

The pause should work, not sure why it isn’t, but as mentioned before, we are close to releasing a new version where the timer function and a lot of other features are redone to make them more reliable and useful.

Thank you for using our app and producing great feedback, if you have any more questions or ideas feel free to email us at contact@wordkeeper.app.

### 1/5 — Okay, but not a modern app

*2024-08-09, version 3.4.3*

Barebones functionality that is just okay. No widgets, no Apple Watch, no updates. For a subscription based app, it is barely even kept up to date for new phones. The developer seems to put no effort into updating it or adding features…

### 1/5 — Waste of time

*2024-04-04, version 3.4.3*

This app is more worried about metrics than letting you get in and write. I searched the entire app and the Place it allowed me to actually write anything was in an obscure notes section. Garbage time waster

### 1/5 — Pay wall

*2024-02-12, version 3.4.3*

Once you finish your trial you will have to subscribe. You won’t be able to enter your account until you do that. I find it really silly to do this, the app is very outdated to begin with. It doesn’t give any sort of motivation to keep writing. It’s a simple app, but way too simple and so boring to look at. They should have made it as a paid app instead of a subscription base. It’s not really worth a lot for a subscription from the way it looks. I’d turn to something else.

### 1/5 — Why though?

*2024-02-11, version 3.4.3*

Why make us set up an account before you reveal that subscription is the only option? Why not make the first step of the subscription be to set up an account?

### 1/5 — Grift

*2024-02-07, version 3.4.3*

Tried it. A subscription service for this app is absolutely ridiculous. Will never use it again.

### 1/5 — It’s impossible to use this app

*2023-10-24, version 3.4.3*

I don't mind paying for subscription, but you don't give an opportunity to try how your app works. I launch it – and see only a suggestion to purchase subscription(

### 1/5 — “Optional” in app purchases

*2026-06-11*

Downloaded this app to see if I wanted to use it to help me keep track of my writing. It had me put together everything for my project and set up alerts looking like it has some functions prior to deciding to buy it. There is no actual functionality without a subscription. You can’t even manually enter your progress. Everything is gated behind a subscription or $85 purchase. I don’t usually leave reviews but this was incredibly upsetting. Their free trial is only a week and that does not feel like a long enough time to decide if this app will be a useful tool in the creative process or not.

**Developer response:** Thank you for taking the time to express your concerns. We are in the process of rethinking the experience for new users, in the meanwhile, let us explain a couple things. The $85 purchase is a purchase we specifically put in by request and an option for users who’d rather purchase it once and have it for life rather than pay a subscription. We do have a free trial and you can cancel any time before the week is over to not get charged. We understand your concerns and as mentioned before, are looking it over to provide a better experience and trial for new users. If you have any more questions or concerns let us know at contact@writerdepot.org

### 1/5 — What??

*2026-04-28, version 4.4.5*

I was so excited to try this app. Reviews were stunning, the layout professional, and the concept horribly intriguing. However, I quickly noticed that many features required a subscription. “That’s fine, I thought”, unperturbed. But, as I looked around and played with the features, I couldn’t even log a session without subscribing! For an app marketed as free, this struck me very off guard, and felt cheated. Deleting the app after writing this review.

### 1/5 — too much/any alternatives?

*2025-11-02, version 4.4.2*

they made the app and adding word count goals unnecessarily complicated. i hadn't realized it updated between the completion of my last novel & my new project and i find it to be too much. anyone have recs for a different app? logging sessions and looking back over them are just... annoying now.

### 1/5 — Wasted My Time

*2025-11-01, version 4.4.2*

Everything beyond project creation is paywalled. Don’t bother unless you want another subscription.

### 1/5 — Wish I hadn’t updated, new UIX is terrible

*2025-10-13*

I’ve used this app for over 5 years as a full time author to track my projects and have loved it. I just updated to the new interface in the middle of the deadline for my next release and it’s a terrible user experience. The layout is not intuitive, there’s no option for list view of projects or any options to customize your view/metric preference, and the metrics themselves are much more confusing to navigate than the previous design. After loving this app for years this new user interface design is likely to make me stop using this app and look for something else. Really disappointing.

**Developer response:** Thanks for the review and taking the time to give us constructive feedback on what you did like about the previous version and what you don’t like about the new one. We understand it can be frustrating and we are dedicated to make a great tool for authors. Please reach out to us at contact@writerdepot.org so we can discuss and further understand what we can do better.

### 1/5 — Loved it until the recent update. Now loathe it.

*2025-05-26, version 4.2.1*

Hate the new version. I used to use this app to plan what I was going to write and when, but the new design is so infuriatingly unfriendly and unintuitive. Also HATE the new AI imagery. I don’t use gen AI, and don’t support its use. I’ve immediately cancelled my subscription. So very disappointed on so many levels. I loved this writing tool - why on earth did you have to ruin it?

### 1/5 — Unusable now.

*2025-05-23, version 4.2.1*

I used to love this app. Then it updated. The AI is frankly disgusting. There are many other options for cheap/free art. But to be honest, I found it better without any of it. It used to be so simple and easy to use. I used to be able to see everything I needed at a glance, and now the layout is ridiculous and over-complex. I’m so overwhelmed by it and really upset with the change. I can’t use this to track progress anymore, it’s just an awful experience, bombarded by ai images everywhere (at least let us turn off any image use because it’s hideous “art” anyway. It looks ugly and is a slap in the face to all creatives using the app.) and way too many different things to look at before I can find what I need. It has become useless to me, when before it was so helpful and easy to use. Not to mention it constantly freezing on me and lagging.

### 1/5 — You can’t use it without paying

*2025-05-20, version 4.2.0*

They pretend you need the ridiculously expensive subscription to “have unlimited projects” and “unlock the full range of features” when actually you can’t even create a single project without paying and even see if you like it. Rip-off

### 1/5 — NOT FREE

*2025-05-03, version 4.0.0*

I wish there was a way to see which apps have free versions before you download them. :( this one isn’t.

### 1/5 — Doesn't work

*2025-05-01, version 3.4.3*

I subscribed to a monthly subscription and also payed for this month, but when I tried to log in, there always accoured an error. Never got the chance to use the software. It's a pity, I really had high hopes...

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — Best Writing Buddy Ever!

*2026-03-21, version 4.4.5*

I love this app so much, it keeps me accountable to finish my book and has so many great features. Highly recommended for anyone who needs a little extra support to finish their project 👌

### 5/5 — Legacy User

*2025-06-04, version 4.2.1*

I have been using this app for years. I finished one book that I self published on Amazon with the help of this app.
Now I forgot my email and freaked out when I logged in and nothing was there. I left a sad review. The creator’s responded and with a couple of emails they helped me fix the problem. I am a legacy user, but I want to tell you it is worth it!

### 5/5 — Amazing update!

*2025-05-25*

The latest update on the Word Keeper app is absolutely amazing. The developers have given it a total user interface overhaul.

It’s intuitive to use and the insight section is phenomenal. I love having all the info at my fingertips for a motivation and to keep myself on track with my work.

As a bonus, I recently reached out with a suggestion for something to make tracking my sessions easier, and not only did the development team get back to me right away, they had a release with that feature out in a matter of days!

**Developer response:** Thank you so much for the thoughtful review. We're really glad the new interface and insights section are helping you stay on track, it means a lot to hear that kind of feedback.

We love hearing from our users, and we're so glad we could turn your idea into reality so quickly. If you have any more questions, issues or feedback just throw us an email at wordkeeper@writerdepot.org. 🫶

### 5/5 — Best Accountability App

*2025-05-09, version 4.1.0*

This keeps a record of all my projects, it’s the reason I got so disciplined at getting my words every day. I’d be lost without this app. It’s worth it - I recommend it when other authors asking me where the cool screenshot proving my word count came from.

### 5/5 — Hello!

*2025-05-02, version 4.0.0*

I’ve been using the app since 2022. It’s very convenient—special thanks for tracking phases for the working on my book. I love it when statistics are clear and clutter-free. I’m glad you’re still improving the app. The new interface is awesome! It feels intuitive)) I hope it looks just as cool on Mac since I usually run the app on my laptop. Big thanks to the developers, and keep up the great work!

### 5/5 — Such a handy little sidekick!

*2025-03-05*

I recently switched over to writing my novel in Pages because I want to focus purely on writing and keep things simple; other apps have a little too much going on that I find distracting. But I wanted to continue tracking my word count as well, so I was looking for a simple app to track words typed and deleted and just keep track of the progress I’m making towards my goal, but this actually gave me more than what I was looking for. The statistics are super cool, and I love being able to write in phases and see how much I’m getting done each time. It’s really cool to see which time of day I’m more productive. The creator is very responsive and got back to me regarding a feature request really quickly. I also love there being a 7-day free trial, so that I can have time to get acquainted with the app before deciding to commit.

**Developer response:** Thank you for the review! It’s great to hear that it helps, that’s why we made it. It’s great feedback like yours that makes the app what it is today, thank you!

### 5/5 — Love this app!!

*2024-02-28, version 3.4.3*

I’ve tried a number of tools to track my word count, and this one is by far my favorite. It’s easy to use, and it’s helping me improve my speed.

### 5/5 — Simple, Yet Perfect

*2024-01-24*

I had gone on a hunt for something like this app, perusing articles and review sites to find what I wanted, but found that the apps people recommended were way too involved. I wanted something simple, clean, and easy-to-use. I wanted to be able to track my words and also have a goal in place so I could watch that progress bar fill up and get my little boost of endorphins. That’s it.

What I found in this app was precisely what I needed, and I’ve used it ever since. I now have two projects in progress on the app and it keeps me happily churning forward with both. My critique partner (also an author) is using and loving it as well. Great app!

### 5/5 — Fantastic!

*2023-08-13, version 3.4.3*

This is such a simple and perfect app to track writing progress. It has a clean interface and a clear concept, which ensures it is not over the top with needless features that overcomplicate.

I use this app to track my progress on novel writing and to keep myself accountable. Daily word count target and easy percentage based progress bars. Perfect!

The only feature I would like to see (nice to have), is a PDF export of a project that includes the existing numbers and charts.

### 5/5 — My Favorite App

*2023-04-10, version 3.4.2*

This app does exactly what you want it to do!! in fact, it will almost certainly exceed your expectations. I keep it on my home screen and use it basically every day. It’s like a little accountability partner you carry around in your pocket. Love it!!
