## What is Word Radicals?

Every English word has a story. Word Radicals lets you read it.

Type an English word and instantly see the Greek and Latin roots it's built from, with each root's meaning and the ancient word it traces back to. Or go the other way: look up a Greek or Latin word and see exactly what it means and which English words descend from it. It's a dictionary that works in both directions.

WHAT YOU CAN DO
- Break down English words: "photography" comes from photo- (light) + -graphy (writing), from Greek phos and grapho.
- Look up 44,000+ real Latin and Ancient Greek words, with definitions and principal parts.
- Explore whole word families: one root like graph- opens onto dozens of related English words.
- See real inflection paradigms, printed with proper macrons and accents.
- Search naturally: type Greek in the Latin alphabet ("logos" finds the Greek), accents are optional, and even inflected forms resolve to their dictionary word.

LEARN IT, DON'T JUST LOOK IT UP
- Study the most productive Greek and Latin roots with built-in flashcards.
- Spaced repetition schedules each card for the moment you're about to forget it.
- A Word of the Day widget puts a new root on your home screen every morning.

BUILT RIGHT
- Dictionary lookup and study work offline. Feedback and optional iCloud sync need a connection; anonymous feature counts and unresolved-search reports are sent when connected.
- No Word Radicals account, ads, or cross-app tracking. Optional iCloud sync uses your Apple account.
- Fast, native, and designed for reading, in light and dark mode.

Whether you're studying for the SAT or GRE, learning Latin or Greek, decoding medical and scientific vocabulary, or simply curious why English words mean what they mean, Word Radicals turns everyday words into a window on two ancient languages.

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 1.9.1 — 2026-09-06

Refreshed App Store screenshots and a new preview video show how to explore word origins, learn Latin and Greek roots, and build lasting recall. App features are unchanged from version 1.9.

### 1.9 — 2026-09-05

Explore word origins, learn roots, and pick up where you left off.

• Follow interactive etymology journeys through recorded languages and meanings.
• Recover from misspelled searches with tappable suggestions, and report corrections directly from an entry.
• Listen at normal or slower speed. English uses a British English system voice; Latin and Ancient Greek playback are clearly labeled system-voice approximations. Pronunciation now supports playback in Silent Mode.
• Try guided root-learning paths, resume interrupted lessons and study sessions, and opt into review reminders.
• Explore words and root families side by side on iPad, with keyboard navigation.
• Optionally sync saved words and review progress through iCloud.
• Share word cards and links, and return to entries using Spotlight or App Shortcuts.
• Send feedback, bug reports, and feature requests directly in the app—without email—with clearer confirmation and retry handling.

Dictionary lookup and study remain available offline. Feedback and optional iCloud sync require a connection.

### 1.6 — 2026-08-30

Groundwork for better coverage: the app now keeps track of the words you searched for that it couldn't find, so those gaps can be filled in future updates. Only the words are recorded — never anything about you.

### 1.5 — 2026-08-27

Send Feedback: report a bug, request a feature, or tell us what you think — from About.

### 1.4 — 2026-08-22

Reliability and performance improvements.
