## What is Wordaboo?

Wordaboo teaches a language the way you would actually learn one: a few minutes at a time, with pictures instead of translations, and every word spoken aloud.

EIGHTEEN COURSES, EVERY ONE TO B2
• French, for English speakers — 166 lessons
• German, for English speakers
• Spanish, for English speakers
• English, for French speakers
• English, for Russian speakers
• English, for Spanish speakers
• English, for Portuguese speakers
• English, for Uzbek speakers
• English, for Turkish speakers
• English, for Indonesian speakers
• English, for Hindi speakers
• German, for Spanish speakers
• German, for Russian speakers
• Spanish, for French speakers
• French, for Spanish speakers
• Italian, for English speakers
• Portuguese (Brazil), for English speakers
• Japanese, for English speakers — in kana, every word and sentence with its rōmaji

2,818 lessons and 17,837 spoken words and phrases. The whole interface follows your language, not just the lessons — nine languages, Hindi included.

CHAPTERS THAT MEAN SOMETHING
Lessons are grouped into chapters mapped to the A1–B2 scale schools use, so you can see what you have covered and what comes next. Levels describe what each chapter teaches. They are not a certificate, and we never pretend otherwise.

FOUR MINUTES A LESSON
Short enough to finish on a bus. You pick a daily goal — 20, 30, 50 or 100 XP — and change it whenever it stops fitting your week.

IT BRINGS BACK WHAT YOU FORGET
Mixed review pulls questions from everything you have finished. Trouble words collects the ones that keep catching you out and drills those instead. Practice rounds earn XP and count toward your goal, but cannot be failed.

LEARN WITH PEOPLE, WITHOUT THE NOISE
Follow friends by request and share a streak. A weekly league puts you with up to twenty learners for seven days and ranks you by the XP you earn in them. There is no messaging in Wordaboo — you can block or report anyone from their profile, and Friends is off until you turn it on.

BUILT TO BE HONEST
· Delete your account from inside the app, with 14 days to change your mind
· Speaking exercises are optional, and so is the microphone
· Your progress lives in your account, and signing out clears the device

WORDABOO PREMIUM
An optional subscription: no ads, unlimited hearts and bubbles, and lessons you can take offline. The courses themselves are free.

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 2.0.0 — 2026-09-25

Every course now goes to B2.

Eleven courses stopped at B1.7 before. All eighteen now run to B2.4, including Italian, Japanese and Brazilian Portuguese.

Each gained twelve units written for its own pair of languages — reported speech, the relative pronouns past the easy one, the passive, and the idioms you cannot work out from the words. Japanese opens on keigo; Portuguese takes the future subjunctive and the personal infinitive, which almost no other language has.

396 new lessons. 2,818 in total, every one with audio.

Fixed: on iPhone, a lesson could stutter and the voice turn robotic partway through. Speaking an answer took the audio session and nothing handed it back, so every clip after that fell through to the phone's own voice.

Fixed: your league score could show your lifetime XP instead of what you had earned since joining your group.

Also fixed: some unit icons on the map were blank; the reminder that your league is closing now comes on the day it actually ends, not every Sunday; the placement test no longer asks you to sign in before your first real lesson; and you can back out of choosing a new course from the map.

### 1.9.10 — 2026-09-22

Japanese. Thirty-three units to B1, 794 words spoken — and every sentence now shows how it is read, fading as you get further in.

Practice knows what you are about to forget: every word gets a place in a schedule, and a review leads with the shakiest.

Ninety-four B2 words swapped for ones people say.

Fixed: dragging tiles, stale friend scores, the league ranking by the number it shows, reminders that stay off.

### 1.9.9 — 2026-09-14

Brazilian Portuguese, and Italian grown to match.

Portuguese for English speakers is the seventeenth course: forty units, a hundred and twenty lessons, to B1.7. It is Brazilian, and the course says so on the tile rather than leaving you to work it out — everything else Portuguese in this app already was.

It is built around what actually catches an English speaker. Ser and estar are both "to be", and picking the wrong one changes what you said rather than merely sounding foreign. Prepositions fuse with articles and it is not optional: de plus o is do, every time. Gostar refuses to work without de. Later units reach the subjunctive, the future subjunctive that almost no other language kept, and a whole unit on né, aí and a gente — the words that separate correct Portuguese from spoken Portuguese.

Italian has grown to the same length: a hundred and twenty lessons, also to B1.7. The new units cover object pronouns that sit in front of the verb, the real future and the conditional, the imperfetto against the passato prossimo, regret in the past conditional, and the filler words — boh, dai, magari — that no textbook teaches and every conversation needs.

The level check is now twenty questions instead of fifteen. Every checkpoint still takes a clean sweep, so the extra question makes guessing past one about four times harder. It still never places you below a chapter you have already finished.

### 1.9.0 — 2026-09-10

Four courses now reach B2.

French, German and Spanish for English speakers, and English for Russian speakers, each gain twelve units and thirty-six lessons.

None of it came from a textbook. Every chapter was written against the 120 lessons already in that course, which killed three planned units outright — the connectives unit was already there as u26l3, and the subjunctive conjunctions were already there as u23l3. What went in instead is what was genuinely missing:

· Reported speech and the tense that steps back with it
· The subjunctive after a negated opinion — je ne pense pas qu’il SOIT là
· The relatives beyond dont and who: lequel, cuyo, dessen, the comma that changes what an English sentence claims
· The tense Spanish uses to guess — serán las cinco means it is probably five
· Participle clauses, which half of written English runs on
· The diminutive that changes tone rather than size

FIXED: YOUR STREAK

Your streak now ends when it has actually ended. It was only ever recalculated when you finished a lesson, so days away left the old number sitting there until your next one. Shared streaks had the same problem for a different reason — a stale day-mask was read as though it were current — and both are fixed.

1,954 lessons across fifteen courses. The other eleven still run to B1.7.

### 1.8.0 — 2026-09-09

Four new courses, and the app now reads in Devanagari.

ENGLISH FOR HINDI SPEAKERS
120 lessons to B1.7, written for what actually trips a Hindi speaker up rather than for English grammar in the abstract. Hindi has no articles at all, so a and the carry the whole unit. It puts नहीं straight in front of the verb, which is why "I not know" is the commonest slip there is — do-support has no Hindi counterpart. And से means both for and since, which is exactly where "I am living here since 2010" comes from.

Where Hindi already does what English does, the cards say so instead of teaching it twice: the copula, the present continuous, the adjective before its noun.

The whole app speaks Hindi — every screen, every button, in Devanagari. That needed a different typeface, because the one the app uses cannot draw the script at all.

GERMAN FOR SPANISH SPEAKERS
A full course to B1.7, written against Spanish rather than translated from the English one. gefallen is simply gustar. kennen and wissen are conocer and saber. So the units go to the two things that genuinely differ: three genders where you have two, and age, which German IS and Spanish HAS.

GERMAN FOR RUSSIAN SPEAKERS
Also complete to B1.7. Cases, three genders, adjective endings, reflexives and ты/вы are all things you already own, and the cards confirm them rather than teach them. What is genuinely new is one thing, and it is a big one: the article, which Russian does not have at all.

SPANISH FOR FRENCH SPEAKERS
Our first course between two Romance languages. The adjective after the noun, the gendered articles, avoir faim, connaître against savoir — all confirmed rather than taught, which frees the whole second half for the four places the two really part company: ser against estar, gustar running backwards, por and para where French has one pour, and the personal a, which French has no counterpart for.

FIXED
Audio sometimes spoke a word from the previous screen, seemingly out of nowhere — most often in the placement test. A safety net meant to catch a silent recording was firing after you had already moved on. It now stops when the audio stops.

Fixed: the headline on the Premium screen was clipped along the top.

Fifteen courses now, and 1,810 lessons.
