Mind Maps, planning, building training systems would not be useful, for me, in my line of work without Wordflex. An intelligent, erudite and innovative tool. Think with it, expand what connects, keep going deeper than you knew before. Bringing you closer to the truth than any other word play App, at least the many I have tried, can produce for you. I have had it for years and is one of the only apps that I have never deleted. If you are a developer and you want to see what a really good app is like, look at this one. It is useful to me when I would otherwise look to a thesaurus but its utility goes much further into areas outside my bailiwick. Sometimes after I use it I just poke around to see what I can find. I can imagine many other uses for this way of showing the relationships between things, such as ideas and concepts. I’m off in a different world now but if I was still developing software I’d be looking at ways to use this technique. ### 5/5 — Indispensable *2021-07-22, version 2.0.2* When I need this app nothing else will do. Do yourself and (if you are a public speaker like myself) others a real favor, try this app. I’m sure, you’ll be glad you did. It’s “the” tool missing from your toolbox. ### 5/5 — Best dictionary ever *2021-07-21, version 2.0.2* English is not my mother tongue but I’ve reached a level which I can improve either through conversation (provided my interlocutor is cultured enough to use more than 4000 words) or through reading (provided the author uses both good grammar and challenging vocabulary) or media (I admit RAP does offer a rainbow of new expressions).… but this app is just brilliant and when I’m short of descriptive words or forgetful of synonyms or wish to learn new expressions, it’s explosive cauliflower design is pure genius. Type a word or an expression or a name and watch a new world unfold. I believe this app not only encourages curiosity but compels one to further exploration. I have recommended this app many times to language students and journalists. I would really love to see it developed for other languages and it’s visual “one core million branches” used for other subjects. ## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated) ### 1/5 — Paid for the program and they are still giving me only free version *2023-09-30, version 2.0.2* Horrible developers don't even know how to make the app work when someone pays for it. Paid for it, even have the receipt through paypal and its sitting there as a free version. Try to hit the "restore" next to the alraedy purchased and nope that does not work. Says App store unavaiable. tap to refresh. App store works perfectly you guys are just lame and don't know how to program. I rated it 2 stars because I cannot reach Robert Scheiner, and there has been no update in a year. This was an app i paid for because I truly enjoyed using it. I enjoyed the rich language exploration of words, their relationships and meanings that are also strong sparks for brainstorming ideas. It deserves 4 stars, but I may have to consider removing it. Too much has happened on the web etc to go that long without signs of maintenance. ### 2/5 — Over-rated *2012-09-26, version 1.1* This app is pretty, but somewhat annoying to use. Type in a word and first you have to tap on the word you just typed amongst a list of near spellings to launch the actual dictionary mode (the thinking apparently being that you will most likely be too stupid to correctly type the word you want to look up). Once in dictionary mode, you get the much advertised branches, but they're all closed, including the definition. Yes I understand that this is meant to encourage exploration, and that you can then use auto-expand to open all the branches. But geez, when I look up a word, I think you can pretty much assume that I want to know the definition without having to go "exploring" for it. I like exploring the derivations, archaic uses etc., but I don't want to have to explore just to get the definition. There needs to be some kind of preference setting to "always show definition" and another to "always auto-expand." ### 3/5 — Stunning but Frustrating *2013-01-30, version 1.2* Lovely app, words bounce alive and let you explore and discover abbreviations. Problem is adding to favourites can't see what I'm typing in notes which hides under the iPad mini keyboard, keywords are in auto caps, want not to have to keep tapping off the auto cap button and frustratingly does not save the words. Love it apart from the few glitches in the favourites section which I hope will sort out soon, hint, hint. ### 4/5 — Great, but customer support…wow…! *2022-06-12, version 2.0.2* Update: I’ve had to buy this again for it to work. And it’s still a great app. HOWEVER - customer support, wow…! Robert Scheiner’s support was that I should buy it again to get it to work, since, to paraphrase his response, “I’d had a good few years of use and it’s only a few pounds to repurchase.” Essentially telling me to ‘do one’ since it was a cheap app, I was being tight not to re-purchase, and it was beneath him to deal with whining customers. Astonishing. And yes, I’ve saved the emails between us since they were so staggering. 5* for the app itself, 0* for Mr Scheiner and his so-called support. So, 4* because it really is a great app, and life’s too short to be hacked off at a rude, mean-spirited jerk. *** Great app, had the full version for years, until it vanished from my iPad to be replaced by the very limited free version, and seemingly no way to restore my purchase. App support is non existent - emails bounce back and there is no way to contact them or get the purchase restored. The style of it and the motion is in line with my mind. I would have thought that a year after the launch of iPad Pro we would have a version that makes the most of its beautiful screen? ### 4/5 — Extraordinary! *2018-12-19, version 2.0.2* Using a thesaurus and dictionary accomplishes the same informational task as Word Flex, and does so in a much more compact space. However, they can't match the level of fun that Word Flex brings to a routine task. An issue I find in Word Flex's extraordinary eye candy is that sometimes I wish the clusters could somehow nest together in a more compact manner. ### 4/5 — Great English tool, and well worth paying the small price for permanent Full upgrade! *2018-09-16, version 2.0.2* This dictionary/thesaurus mind map app is really good. It's one of a very few iPad apps which has the entire Oxford English Dictionary (OED) in it, as far as I could see when I was looking for an offline Oxford English dictionary. Because it's all stored on the device, you don't need to go online to access OED Online (which costed a hefty subscription) or the English website of Oxford Living Dictionaries. When I went to the OED website, it listed this app as one of two apps (for iOS?) endorsed by Oxford University Press and containing the entire dictionary. WordFlex has real person recorded pronunciation audio of basically all the words in both British and American English (male/female type of voice artist is not switchable, and varies). I also value the origin feature, which shows the etymologies of many words. The mind mapping and word cloud search are unique and superb features, well organised, very useful for learning and exploring words, and great for visual focus type people. I can save unlimited amounts of words to a favourites list to view in full again later, regardless of whether using the free or paid version. As detailed in the description, the full standard Oxford British English and American English dictionaries are included, along with the full standard Oxford thesaurus; this also means some regional words such as those from Australian, and New Zealand, English are included. I often found this app quite limited at only five new word mind maps (word maps?) each 24 hour day (changing over at local midnight!), but all restrictions were permanently lifted for a one time $6 NZD in-app purchase. I intentionally persevered with the limit, supplementing when needed mainly with the Oxford Living Dictionaries website until I knew for sure WordFlex Full/Premium was probably going to be a worthy investment—and it was. I think I have been using WordFlex for general reference and writing for 2-3 months now. If you want to see how it works, the seven minute video I saw on the developer website which is linked in the listing, shows it all, I think. It's not like complex with tons of different features and settings; rather, it has several great, simple, and easy-to-use features and no settings at all. I have one problem with WordFlex, that often the expansion of nodes leads to items overlapping each other. They usually can be easily dragged apart, but I would like to see this rectified. I also wish to be able to keep an unlimited history of the words I look up for later reference if need be—at the moment it clears anything older than a week automatically. Finally, I appreciate that WordFlex is uniquely designed for the touchscreen tablet form factor, but I want to see it (or something just as good) on iPhones, Macs, and maybe even iPod touch's, too (it is iPad only at the moment).
