## What is WorkOutDoors?

WorkOutDoors is the most advanced and most configurable workout app for the Apple Watch. It's perfect for running, cycling, hiking and any other indoor or outdoor activity.

Note: WorkOutDoors requires an Apple Watch Series 4 or later. It is not necessary to have your iPhone with you during a workout.

The app uses Apple’s workout system, so all workouts are saved to the Health system. However it also provides many extra features over Apple's app, such as:

- a super-smooth vector map that can be shown during a workout;
- multiple configurable screens with metrics and graphs from a pool of 800+ data fields;
- route files can be imported and used for navigation (including turn by turn directions);
- dozens of configurable alerts (e.g. every mile; high heart rate; low pace; off-route etc);
- interval schedules can be created using the larger screen of the phone app;
- climbs and descents are supported with notifications and on-screen data and graphs;
- waypoints can be created, navigated to, and exported;
- use shortcuts to associate operations with gestures (e.g. double tap to hear configurable metrics);
- compare pace against a target or a previous workout (using metrics and a dot on the map);
- show zones for pace and power as well as heart rate (with optional coloured backgrounds);
- auto-pause is available for all outdoor activities;
- shows GPS and heart rate before starting a workout, so that you can wait for good signals;
- configure distance and pace for running / walking to come from Apple’s pedometer or from GPS;
- workouts can be exported in FIT / TCX / GPX files, or automatically sent to Strava;
- workouts created by the app can be analysed in great depth in the iPhone app.

The app also has many more features. The map is a particular highlight. It uses OpenStreetMap, which provides worldwide coverage and includes the trails necessary for outdoor workouts. It also has several features that help you navigate during a workout:

- maps can be smoothly panned and zoomed, and can rotate according to the compass;
- a breadcrumb trail of your whole route is displayed on the map during the workout;
- topographic data can be shown, with configurable contour colours and hill shading;
- map-only mode is provided for when you don't want to start a workout and just need a map;
- a circular scale is shown when you zoom, making it easy to see the distance to features;
- maps can be stored on the watch for use when offline (they are downloaded as required if online);
- a red compass points north and a green compass points to the start;
- choose a waypoint to see a compass and distance to it in the corner of the map;
- you can also navigate to waypoints on the map, such as hospitals, sights, cafes etc.

If you load a route from a GPX / TCX / FIT file then navigation is even easier:

- your position is shown on an elevation profile of the route;
- the remaining distance, time and ascent can also be displayed;
- you can get alerted when you go off-route;
- when off-route then a compass is shown which points to the nearest part of the route;
- if the route contains turn by turn directions then these can be used like a sat nav;
- if there are no directions then the app can use “bend detection” to generate them;
- the next direction is shown as an icon and distance in the corner of the map;
- the map can automatically zoom in when you are approaching a turn;
- you can use shake gestures to hear the distance to the next turn or the end of the route;
- routes are coloured by gradient: from red for steep uphill to blue for steep downhill;
- you can configure what information is displayed during a climb or descent.

All this is included for a single one-off payment. No extra in-app purchases or subscriptions are required (although there is a completely optional in-app tip jar which was requested by long-term users).

If you own an Apple Watch and do any form of exercise, then WorkOutDoors is the app for you. Give it a go!

### 5/5 — Perfectly powerful

*2026-08-10, version 6.4*

Use it for cycling and it’s magic.

### 5/5 — Apple needs to by this as an adventure mode on the ultra.

*2026-08-08, version 6.4*

Brilliant app, this app makes more of the Apple Watch ultra hardware than Apple themselves make of the hardware, how they have not acquired this company that has made the app is beyond me as this is the single piece that the Apple Watch Ultra has been missing, I’ve had the Garmin watch and with this app my Apple Watch ultra with apples ecosystem combined with this app well out perform and proves more useful than the Garmin watch, you wouldn’t need anything else. All you need is a tiny battery pack if you need to top up the charge, but I just done s full days hike using the GPS and maps on my watch for 5 hours straight and still had 67% battery life left, if I was going out another day for a long full hike I’d only need a small top up. Apple buy this.

### 5/5 — Exceptional

*2026-08-08, version 6.4*

Provides all the required features for any trail runner out there (and more). Switched to this over a combination of Apple Workout and Strava. Customisation is second to none. I’ll now also recommend this to any athletes I work with due to these features. Also had a question about integrations with other apps and via email the reply was almost instant and thoroughly detailed. You won’t regret any part of purchasing this app.

### 5/5 — Excellent in iPhone & Apple Watch

*2026-08-06, version 6.4*

It is very easy to send maps directly from other apps on iPhone to WorkOutDoors. Then I use the map on my Apple Watch while Hiking.

### 5/5 — Pour m’entraîner

*2026-08-04, version 6.4*

J’adore vraiment bien fais juste en anglais mais on se retrouve facilement

### 5/5 — Only app needed for any sport

*2026-08-02, version 6.4*

As many others have said, if you run, hike, cycle, or any other numerous sports and have an Apple Watch, you have to install this. It gives it so much more functionality, so many things that people with Garmin or other watches can't even dream about.

And for the price of a beer or so, it transforms your watch. It's just smart. It's just how you would design an app to do this if all your wish lists could be put into one brilliant app.

### 5/5 — This is the best app!

*2026-07-31, version 6.4*

You don’t need to worry about getting another app ever, very easy to customize and has all you need.

### 5/5 — Apple Watch Would Be Incomplete Without It

*2026-07-29, version 6.4*

If this app didn’t exist, the Apple Watch would not be that useful for anybody who enjoys outdoor activities. Hard to believe that much of this isn’t included on the watch, but I’m glad it’s not because WOD probably does it better.

### 5/5 — Simply Outstanding

*2026-07-29, version 6.4*

If you want an inexpensive app ($8.99, one time payment, for life) that lets you 100% configure your watch to show exactly the data you want in the format you want it, then get a step-by-step post-run summary overlayed on a map of your run, this is the app for you. There are a million ways to configure this thing and it only took me about 10 min of playing around with it to settle on what I wanted.

For example, I do zone training, so I need heart rate at the top in big numbers. But I don’t like doing math while running, so I use the option of HR color coding by HR zone. I like to know my average speed (mph) not my pace (min/mi), and guess what? It’s an option. I like to know the steepness of the grade (eg +9%), so I selected that and which screen cell to put it. Being in CO, knowing the current elevation is very useful, too. Check. I rounded out the display with total distance and total workout time. But that’s just my take on it.

I wanted voice coaching, but not lengthy summaries that break my concentration, so I just have it ping me every 1/4 mile with my avg speed and distance covered. When running, there’s a haptic and the robot quickly says “2.5 miles, speed 6.4” in my earbuds. HR zone changes also feature a quick haptic (and the HR display changes color) so I know if I need to speed up or slow down.

There’s an onscreen map with alerts for trail waypoints. Super handy on the mazes of Front Range trails. It took just a couple of minutes to create a route in the app and send it to my watch. If I’m on a new trail, the map is handy. If I’m running a familiar favorite, I just tap the screen so I only see the metrics.

Also, I use AllTrails a lot. I can build routes there and send them to the WorkOutSide app in one step.

I haven’t used the interval workouts yet, but it seems intuitive to program those.

After the run, I can pull the workout up on the app and drag the slider to see nearly step by step metrics like pace, HR, power, zone, etc. along with the elevation profile. Visually, it’s STUNNING as the trail is overlayed with color codes like red/yellow/green reflecting slow, moderate, and faster paces at every point on the trail. As I drag the slider, a little chevron appears on the map indicating where I was on the trail.

The native Workout app on the Apple watch is fine if I just want basics, and there are screens to choose from. But for $9.00 I get every bit of data I want and it is completely configurable on my watch face. And the post run data overlayed on the map crushes the Apple Workout app.

I was intimidated by all the options at first. But once I realized that I could delete all the screens I didn’t like, then create screens I do like, including the size/readability of each, I was locked in. That intimidation lasted about 10 min. Once I learned how to configure the cells on the display, the rest of the time was just me deciding what data I needed to see while running.

There is an instruction manual, and you’ll get prompted to look at it. But honestly, I’m pretty good with tech, so it was just a matter of pushing buttons to figure things out.

This is just a runners review. But there are similar sport modes for biking, swimming, snow sports, even golf, lol.

Highly recommend!

### 5/5 — Top tier app

*2026-07-29, version 6.4*

This app is amazing. One of the best (if not the best) apps on my Apple Watch. I get such great information from it and I only use a fraction of the available options. I just love it.

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 6.4 — 2026-06-26

This is a bug fix version which addresses a few issues in the last version. Most notably the inability to set up a connection with Strava is now fixed.

If you are having problems with the action button on the Ultra then please reboot the watch because that often fixes any issues with it.

Note: this version requires watchOS 9.2, which means that it will no longer run on the old series 3 watches which were released back in 2017. Sorry about that. It was a necessary restriction in order to work around an issue in recent versions of watchOS.

### 6.3 — 2026-06-16

- New "Possibly Resumed” alert to warn if you move whilst paused
- New “Current Elevation Pace (VAM)” and “Climb Average Elevation Pace" metrics
- New “Time in Current Zone” metrics (for heart rate, pace and power)
- Option of a black background for metrics on the watch instead of dark grey rectangles
- More "custom" screen profiles available
- Ability to cancel stalled file transfers
- Now using appropriate haptics for left and right turns
- New advanced options for interaction with audio apps
- Structural modernisation of the code for compatibility with future versions of iOS
- Forward compatibility with major changes in the next version of the app

Plus the usual minor improvements and bug fixes, including a workaround for an issue with the action button that appeared in watchOS 26.5.

### 6.2 — 2025-10-08

A few tweaks for iOS 26 and the new Ultra 3, series 11 and SE 3 watches.

Plus the usual minor improvements and bug fixes

### 6.1 — 2025-09-16

This version supports watchOS 26 and iOS 26, as well as having the usual bug fixes and minor improvements.

Note: If the app does not start on the watch with watchOS 26, then please reboot the watch and it should be fine after that.

### 6.0 — 2025-08-18

This version includes many new features and as ever they are free to existing users, just as they have been for over 8 years. When you buy WorkOutDoors you pay once for the lifetime of the app, and yet you still get free updates like this with loads of powerful new features.

- Turn by Turn Navigation (if navigation waypoints in route file)
- Bend Detection (if no navigation waypoints in file)
- Waypoint Creation and Navigation
- Climb and Descent detection
- Load routes from TCX and FIT files as well as GPX files
- Compare performance against a previous workout by using it as a target
- Hundreds of new screen layouts possible by merging adjacent fields
- Ability to search for metrics by name (from over 800 now available)
- New heart /pace / power metrics with zone-coloured backgrounds
- many, many other changes
