## What is Wrighter?

Wrighter is a writing app built for novelists. Outline your story, draft it, and edit it all the way to done, across your Mac, iPhone, and iPad.

Wrighter motivates you to write with the usual tricks of the trade:

- Live word count versus targets
- Timed sprints
- Or forward-only mode that locks the cursor and cut-and-paste so you stop fiddling and keep moving.

But unlike other apps it stays with you through the rewrite. As you edit, it reads your prose and scores the things that weaken fiction: adverbs shoring up weak verbs, passive sentences, clichés, filler, repeated words, and lines that run too long. You can see what to tighten at a glance, and get a clear signal for when you’ve finished working a scene.
It turns rewriting, the worst part of writing, into a tiny dopamine hit of joy: you wrestle the words into a shape that communicates your message to anyone who reads it.

Your novel has structure, and Wrighter keeps it in front of you. Move between the outline, the corkboard, and the full manuscript without losing your place. It tracks who's in each scene and where the action happens, so the story stays true to your characters' arcs, the conflict building, and the mood of the room.

Your work runs from Draft to Rewrite, to Finish, and all of it syncs to your account, so the chapter you started on your phone arrives ready on your Mac.

Wrighter has no AI in it. It will not write for you, and it never sends your manuscript to anyone.
The words stay yours. If you would prefer to keep your files as plain Markdown on your own device, that’s fine too.

## Version history (last 3 releases)

### 7.0.2 — 2026-08-03

- Imports a manuscript as chapters even when the file has no Markdown headings, and tells you how it split it.
- Drag a Markdown file onto a book, or into the sidebar, and it arrives the same way.
- Writing is never silently overwritten when two devices edit the same scene. Your version is kept beside it with the differences highlighted.
- Emptying the Trash clears those words from the cloud too.
- Trash now holds deleted notes as well as scenes.
- A book kept in your own folder stays on the device that has the folder.
- Quitting straight after typing never loses words.
- Large libraries sync reliably.

### 7.0.1 — 2026-08-01

- Import and Attach a folder now work on Mac. Both did nothing when you chose them.
- A manuscript imported without Markdown headings arrives as chapters, not as one enormous scene. Wrighter tells you how it split it.
- Plan saves as you type. Moving to another row used to throw away the title you had just typed.
- The outliner keys work as they should: Tab to indent, Shift-Tab to outdent, Return for the next row, arrows to move between rows without leaving the text.
- Dragging a row in Plan shows where it will land and what it will sit under, and works on iPhone and iPad.
- The book menu opens again on iPhone and iPad.
- Trash now holds deleted notes, characters, locations and artefacts, not just scenes. Emptying it clears the words from the cloud too.
- A book attached from a folder shows just the manuscript and stays on the device that has the folder. Detaching leaves your files exactly as they are.
- Large libraries sync reliably.
