You play them out. Any legal move is allowed. While you follow the recorded line your opponent answers from the book; step off it and the engine takes over the defence. A study is solved when your opponent has no move left, or when you have played the recorded line to its end. Every position and every move was replayed through the rules engine before it shipped, so no study contains an illegal move or a line that does not reach its stated result.
