## What is Yalinguth?

Yalinguth (“yesterday” in Woi Wurrung) is a mobile app/ audio augmented reality experience that connects people to place and history through geo-located soundscapes and stories told by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. In keeping with oral traditions, and to minimise screens, Yalinguth is expressed entirely through sound. The overall premise of Yalinguth is guided by the words of the Elders that “we need to go back, to go forwards”.

Yalinguth aims to connect students, tourists, and the local community with important firsthand historical accounts, increasing people’s knowledge of the Aboriginal history of Victoria. The purpose is to increase empathy, respect, community connection, and to celebrate the Elders who paved the way for Aboriginal Rights in Victoria and Australia. With this, Yalinguth aims to contribute to the processes of truth telling, healing and reconciliation.

Yalinguth contains two separate audio walks in Melbourne, Australia: the first to launch was the birthplace of the rights movement, Gertrude Street in Fitzroy; and the second along the Birrarung/Yarra River in the Melbourne CBD.

Yalinguth can only be heard once you are at these locations and is best experienced with headphones.

### 5/5 — Grateful

*2025-02-07, version 2.0*

Myself and my two teenage daughters were immersed in this incredible experience for over 3 hours in Fitzroy and we still need to go back to hear the rest of the stories. A brilliant opportunity to listen to truth telling and understand the history of Victoria that is so often hidden. Thank you so much for this experience!

### 5/5 — Yalinguth - an unforgettable experience

*2024-05-05, version 2.0*

As a Year 12 student who has grown up learning about Indigenous culture in school, being able to listen to real experiences added another dimension to my education that school hasn’t been able to provide. Listening to the silenced voices of those with incredible connection to that land was insightful and inspiring.

### 5/5 — Incredible experience

*2024-04-24, version 2.0*

I took my 17 year old daughter to Gertrude St Fitzroy to check out this app and was blown away.

The touching, funny and heart breaking stories of many First Nations elders talking about their lives and community on Gertrude St will stick with me forever. The music, birdsong and children playing all helped to capture the street in its heyday during the Aboriginal Rights movement in the 60s, 70s and 80s.

The quality of the app is fantastic as we seamlessly walked along Gertrude Street listening to story after story. I can’t wait to go back and do it again.

### 5/5 — Thank you
