### 2/5 — Good but in app purchase doesn’t work

*2026-07-11*

The videos look good from the free ones but I paid for the locked ones and they remained locked. Ended up asking for a refund.

### 2/5 — The Master

*2026-02-28*

Very knowledgeable instructor. The issue is the design. They’ve just filmed him chatting it all through whilst he demonstrated. There is a lot of talking and explaining - possibly necessary the first time in a class but if you are thinking of an app that will support your progression, development and learning this isn’t it. Picture coming to a class live. In that sense YouTube probably better.

### 2/5 — Locked Videos

*2026-02-20*

Downloaded the app and started to watch the videos which I though were good, so paid to unlock the rest of the lessons, however they remain locked. I emailed the company but no response. So will have to request a refund. It’s a shame as I was looking forward to learning. ☹️

### 2/5 — Update changed videos

*2025-07-16, version 2.0.0*

One of the last updates changed the app significantly. Before it was possible to download and store the videos within the app, now it’s not longer possible. The download button is not working, even if you paid. This causes delays in the videos if you want to learn. Learning in the nature without WiFi is not possible if you use a iPad without cellular connection capabilities. Restore download, please!

### 3/5 — Could have been a great app

*2024-04-14*

The instructor is clearly a master. Very impressionable and highly skilled. My issue is not the quality but that it doesn’t clarify that each episode costs $10. I paid thinking it was going to open all the locked sessions. No. Even a 7 minute talk costs $10. Too excessive. Who would pay that for each and every session not knowing what’s on it. Not right. Very disappointing. You should be more upfront.

### 4/5 — Is it me or the app?

*2018-12-29*

This is a good app. The instruction is great. The videos can be a bit frustrating with download times and buffering, but other than that, the app is great.

### 4/5 — Dr Yang is the pre-eminent authority, the Master.

*2017-11-19*

5* for impeccable instruction from the revered Master who holds and can teach the « secret » like none other. Will rate this app w 5* rating for a VR updated version. Keeping screen right in front of your eyes as you move all around would be the ultimate! Please please update to VR!!!!
Note: FYI here is quote from the about section of part 2,3 app “Dr. Yang's tai chi lineage can be traced back to the Yang family through Grandmaster Kao, Tao (高濤) and his teacher Yue, Huanzhi (樂奐之), an indoor disciple of Yang, Chengfu (楊澄甫). “
Dr. Yang is the real deal.... we are truly blessed to receive his teachings.

### 5/5 — Love the app!

*2017-10-17*

I’m loving by the app. My son and I have been practicing but would like to see the ability to cast so we both can view the videos on a larger screen.

### 5/5 — Ausführlich und sehr gut Erklärt

*2017-09-06, version 1.0.5*

### 5/5 — Gives the "why" for the movements

*2017-08-28*

I had been wanting to learn Tai Chi for many years, but it has been hard to find explanations of the martial art aspects of Tai chi, given that so much attention is paid to its benefits as a relaxing way to train balance and breathing. I find that understanding the martial art application of the movements makes the movements much more meaningful and interesting. These videos explain in great detail what you are actually practicing with each movement, so that you aren't just waving your hands around without focused intention. A fantastic introduction to Tai Chi, and the price is unbelievable for the pearls of knowledge that you get from these videos. My one recommendation is that it would be super helpful to add in a button that lets you rewind 10-15 seconds to review a movement without having to use the slider.

### 5/5 — Excellent Instruction

*2017-03-26*

I took Tai Chi Yang style Long Form in my 20s. Now in my early 50s I'm returning to it after surgery and physical setbacks. I wanted something that showed me both the form and application. These lessons are great. This master is the real deal. So excited to have found these. Costs far less than lessons usually cost and I can do them in my own home. Downloaded to my phone but use airplay to have it show on my tv thru AppleTV. Highly recommend.

### 5/5 — The Gold Standrd

*2017-02-23*

Wife and I took 4 months of Yang Tai Chi training at a local Martial Arts school. We have learned more from this app than the school ever tried to teach. If you want to learn the forms properly and how and why they are done, I most strongly recommend this App (and parts two and three), even if you are attending classes.

(YMAA)-sword, staff and fan training apps of this quality please!

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — Concerned customer

*2026-01-01*

When you try to open the first locked video it asks you to pay to unlock all. I did on my iPhone, the application told me that the payment was successful BUT it did not unlock the videos. Is this a scam that needs to be reported?

### 1/5 — Disappointed

*2025-11-02*

I paid $10 to unlock all videos but only one unlocked. I can’t find a way to contact the developer

### 1/5 — Looks like it would be great- can’t unlock it

*2025-01-03*

Repeatedly tried to pay for the app but the app doesn’t accept the payment and then a pop up that is clearly part of the app pops up and asks for all of your Apple passwords and login… concerning.

### 1/5 — Can’t get past the email address request.

*2022-07-19, version 1.0.7*

Every time I enter my email, it says it can’t be processed. Very frustrating. Can anyone help?

**Developer response:** Please delete the app, and download the updated version. Apple changed the operating system and caused a glitch in our app. You may enter your email to connect with YMAA, or just click past it. Whatever you prefer. Thank you.

### 1/5 — Purchase erased!

*2022-07-11*

I purchased the extra content for $9.99 and when I transferred phones it’s telling me I have to re buy them. It’s on the same Apple ID

**Developer response:** Please delete the app, and download the updated version. Apple changed the operating system and caused a glitch. Any purchases should be visible when you update. Thank you.

### 1/5 — Not enough of a preview

*2020-06-27*

I wanted to get an app to brush up my Tai Chi, and this looked good, but it's too locked down. None of the instructional videos is available in the free tier, so there's no way to tell if it's worth buying. The free tier is all just people talking about Tai Chi.
Would definitely re-review if there was something to evaluate. Just one lesson would be enough.

**Developer response:** There is 60 minutes of free video in this app. Dr. Yang is the most respected Yang-style Taijiquan researcher, author and teacher in the world.

### 1/5 — Nothings free

*2020-06-03*

I can see wanting to charge for more videos, but they charge for anything other than the introduction, which shows you nothing. So I have no idea if the app is any good and worth spending money on. Delete.

**Developer response:** There is 60 minutes of free video in this app. Dr. Yang is the most respected Yang-style Taijiquan researcher, author and teacher in the world.

### 1/5 — Not free

*2018-09-29*

There is no free lesson. All lessons are paid for so please find another app unless you wish to pay for it. Really wish they just made this a paid app to start with so it didn’t deceive Other's

**Developer response:** There is 60 minutes of free video in this app. Dr. Yang is the most respected Yang-style Taijiquan researcher, author and teacher in the world. This app is $9.99 to unlock hours of detailed instruction. The DVD version is $50.

### 1/5 — Fail.

*2015-12-31, version 1.0.3*

Been trying to download for 3 hours. Starts to download, gets 3/4 in and stalls. Start over. Lathered rinse repeat.

I will try again tomorrow but expect nothing different. No. I have no connection issues. I have downloaded other apps that night.

### 1/5 — Not really free

*2014-09-17, version 1.0.1*

Promoted as a free app, but if you want anything fur that than general info, you have to pay. It might be worth it,but if I can't try it out on even a basic level to see if it works for me,I won't spend, my money.

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — Finde ich sehr gut

*2025-03-17, version 1.0.11*

### 5/5 — Super

*2024-04-27*

Love this app, super simple. Videos are easy to follow and scroll. Movements are explained very well.

### 5/5 — Easy way to learn

*2023-01-23, version 1.0.11*

I already have doctor yang’s tai chi dvd, but having the app means I can take it wherever I go! I can practice while I wait for the bus!

### 5/5 — So convenient!

*2023-01-17*

It’s like having Dr. Yang in your pocket. I love the convenience of this app. It allows me to take a lesson anywhere, waiting a the bus stop, on a coffee break, or just hanging out killing time.

### 5/5 — Best Yang-style video app

*2023-01-16, version 1.0.11*

Dr. Yang teaches the “old Yang” 108 form with its original martial applications, sometimes known as a Yang, Ban-Hou form. Great value for these lessons, much less than the $50 Dvd cost! Beautiful footage and step by step instruction, like a private lesson on my iPad. Parts 2&3 of the form are also available with hours more video lessons in a separate app. But Part 1 is enough to study for many months.

### 5/5 — Simply Amazing UPDATE

*2023-01-15*

The latest update to this App keeps it fast and compatible. Right from the introduction, you know you are about to have a high quality Tai Chi learning experience. Simply the best Tai Chi learning App. Thank you Dr. Yang!

It’s absolutely fabulous that YMAA is making this (their most popular instructional video) program an APP. If you need a video to learn, correct, or go deeper in your Tai Chi practice, this video APP is your best choice. The quality of the footage is top rate, the audio is very good, and there are even English subtitles if you need them. If you practice or are just interested in Tai Chi, try the free parts of this video APP. You will be amazed.

### 5/5 — Great value for the price

*2022-06-20*

I learned the complete form in the past but then I let my study lapse and forgot everything. Too many places focuses on the relaxing elements but without seeing the martial applications you lose a lot of the subtlety of the movements.

I believe they show you the full form but without much explanation. For a better example of what you are getting you should look at the free elements in the second series. But understand that the paid portions go deeper into how to visualize and apply the movements.

I’m looking forward to spending a lot of time with this.

### 5/5 — A Real Master

*2021-04-16*

It is well worth the price of this app to have high quality instruction from a real master of tai chi on my iPad so I can take it with me. I like the presentation and also appreciate the captions at the bottom of the screen so I can follow along better. I really like Dr. Yang’s style and easy-going but effective manner of presenting the material carefully and accurately. Thank you.

### 5/5 — Awesome

*2020-05-19*

This is a great 10 buck app. Money well spent. I've read some reviews complaining that it isn't free. Why would you think this all should be for free? Try going to a local class and see what you'd have to pay.

### 5/5 — I wish I could meet him

*2020-02-16*

I truly wish I could practice with this man, the way he explains things you can tell this is his way of life and he cares deeply about what he is saying. I’m just so sad I can’t do it with him. I’ve had a lot of surgery on my leg and Tai chi may be the only thing to save my leg, I bet if I practice with him I could be able to run!
