## What is Yomaru?

Learn Japanese by reading the real thing. Yomaru turns Japanese news, articles, and stories into lessons you can actually read — scan or paste any Japanese text, get instant furigana and an English translation, and learn the words and kanji you don't know yet.

Most apps drill kanji in isolation. Yomaru is built around reading. The Read tab pulls from a curated list of Japanese feeds, each tagged by reading level, so you can pick something that fits where you are. Words you already know read clean; new kanji get furigana; and your study path quietly decides what to teach next.

Found Japanese out in the wild? Scan Japanese text with your camera, paste it, or share a page from any app. Yomaru adds furigana to every kanji, translates the sentence to English, and teaches anything you don't know yet — the kanji first, then the word, then the sentence. Every kanji you learn unlocks new words and sentences you can now read.

WHY YOMARU

• A reading app, not a flashcard grind — you learn by reading real Japanese, not memorizing lists
• Your own path — every kanji you learn reshapes what comes next; two people starting the same day diverge by week two
• Real sentences in order — 2,227 kanji, 3,584 words, and 1,434 sentences sequenced N5 → N1 to build reading ability
• Prerequisites enforced — you never meet a word before its kanji, or a sentence before its words
• Furigana reader built in — every kanji shows readings in real word examples, so they click in context
• Writing practice — stroke animations and finger-trace for every kanji
• Spaced repetition — the Practice tab schedules reviews around your memory, so reading practice fits the time you have

READ & TRANSLATE REAL JAPANESE

• Read Japanese news, articles, and stories tagged by level — Japanese reading practice that fits your day
• Tap an English translation on any sentence — on-device, no account, no cloud
• Paste any article URL to read something specific; your study path applies the same way
• Tap any kanji you don't know and learn it without leaving the article

SCAN TO LEARN

• Scan Japanese text with your camera, paste, or share from any app — any Japanese becomes a lesson
• 315,000+ words and 10,000+ kanji preloaded — scan something obscure and Yomaru still knows it
• Place names, stations, and company names annotated (530,000+ proper names)

BROWSE & SEARCH

• Search a 315,000-word Japanese–English dictionary by character, meaning, or reading — in romaji, kana, or English
• Library of kanji and vocabulary browsable by level
• Send anything to the Practice queue for later review

FREE & OFFLINE

Every kanji, word, and sentence lives on your device — camera OCR and translation run on-device too. Only following web feeds needs internet.

Whether you want to read the Japanese you encounter every day, decode a sign you photographed, or build toward fluency one article at a time, Yomaru meets you where you are and teaches the Japanese you actually want to read.

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 3.6.1 — 2026-06-06

• Calmer daily reminder — defaults to 21:30 with a soft notification sound and low-key wording; change the time anytime in Settings → Reminders
• Daily review cap is now a hard ceiling — the Practice tab, due counter, and reminders never push you past the number you set
• Small fixes and polish

### 3.6.0 — 2026-05-26

- Hide meaning and improve choices distractors on word quiz
- Improved strictness of kanji writing exercise
- Various UI fixes and improvement

### 3.5.0 — 2026-05-20

• Daily review cap — pick a target between 10 and 100; the Practice tab, due counter, and reminders all stop pestering you the moment you hit it
• Smarter reading feed — articles are ranked by how learnable they are at your level, slow-publishing sources hold their slot against high-frequency news, and recently opened articles fade between refreshes
• Library polish — fixed missing learned-status badges on JLPT-level views, search results, and Word Tree branches off the current screen
• Paste a bare domain to read it — typing "example.jp" into Read works just like a full URL
• Small polish — back chevron on the Settings screen, feedback emails prefilled with your app version and platform

### 3.3.1 — 2026-05-12

- Quiz is replaced with spaced reviews system for more progressive and less demanding learning experience
- Fixed some word is incorrectly extracted from sentence
- Better handling when on-device translation model is not available
