### 4/5 — Loving the mechanics

*2016-06-28*

Very solid tactical gameplay. Can you please remove the weird scan lines in the tutorial?

### 4/5 — Good, but no instructions

*2015-11-01*

Great game. First time I've played this having not tried the paper version. Good tutorials to take you through the various concepts. However, there are no written rules so you can't simply look up an easily forgotten piece of information.

### 5/5 — Clever yet simple

*2015-10-12*

It's a solid game, now I know it works well I'm looking at buying it in paper format. I play mtg a lot and this is no where near as in depth but don't let that put you off, the creator has done a brilliant job of turning a 2D fighting game into an engaging card game. Like any of these games there is an element of luck but the most important part is how clever you are with your cards once an attack gets through. Not only that but the characters have some really well thought out special abilities which makes them very different to play as or against, giving the characters much more identity than I thought possible. Obviously the only down side is the price Which will put a lot of people off. I guess because it's sold on steam for £10 they see it as a fair price... I think the creators should re launch this app as yomi lite for free with two starting characters to get you into it and make all the other characters available to buy for 79p...just as a marketing move as I believe it would only help sales in the physical format. And this game could be massive!! If the cost doesn't put you off then buy it because it's a good game.

### 5/5 — An exceptional card game to learn and master.

*2015-07-25, version 1.13*

Yomi is an exceptional "fighting game in card game form." It is a game of mastery and mind games.

What initially looks like paper, rock, scissors with cards is cleverly a game rich with character/deck strategies, valuation decisions, and yes--reading your opponent. And like most great competitive games, there is a strategic opening, middle game, and endgame in Yomi.

Yomi is the game I play the most on iOS. Practicing vs the AI is a very fun, "when I find a little time," activity. The online play is cross-platform as you can play against players from iOS, Steam, and web browsers.

As of version 1.13 the game is running perfectly on my iPad Air 2 and iPhone 5S, both running iOS 8.4. Yes, it looks great and is playable on the 5S screen.

Skills rewarded:
* Hand management (building your big win condition and maintaining a good hand of cards)

* Valuation (understanding the strength of your options, what is usable/inefficient/tradeable/too good)

* Reading or Evaluating Your Opponent (understanding the soundness of their plays, deducing their likely hand, observing their risk/reward preference and influencers)

* Strategic knowledge and experience. Learning the game.

If you want to quickly improve in this game, I recommend going to fantasystrike.com

Yomi captures the forced mixup situations in many fighting games as well as the rhythm of more old school fighters like Street Fighter, Virtua Fighter, and King of Fighters. The hand management is almost like Super Meter management in such games too as you build your big winning strike and try to time that big strike against your opponent.

This game is very skill rewarding and worthy of mastering, even if only one character :)

### 5/5 — Genial, leider unbeachtet

*2015-07-23*

### 5/5 — Excellent deep gameplay

*2015-07-18*

I have been searching for a deep game I could really dive into and learn, and Yomi is more than a perfect fit. It is super fun learning the different characters, and it totally feels like a 2D fighter in board game form. I anticipate playing this for a long time, and hope for lots of people to meet up with online!

### 5/5 — Worth it

*2015-06-24, version 1.10*

It's worth the ten bucks buying the game

### 5/5 — The card art with the latest update is broken

*2015-06-08*

The card art appears to be randomly applied to each card. Great game, but the latest update broke it.

### 5/5 — Great app for playing a great card game

*2015-04-08*

Yomi is a card game by David Sirlin. He specializes in creating games with asymmetrical balance. His games are all set in the same world where battle games (and games about the battle games) are the norm.

Yomi has a different deck of cards for each character. The characters all have individual abilities.

The basis of the game is a rock/paper/scissors mechanic of Attack/Throw/Block-Dodge. The cards are set against a standard deck of playing cards with numbered cards 2-10, the face cards, aces, and Jokers.

Most of the cards have two different actions depending on which end of the card is at the top. So, a card may have an Attack action on one end and a Dodge Action on the other.

The two players in the game play their combat cards facedown and are revealed simultaneously. Each character, in addition to having some innate abilities, also has different abilities on some of the cards in addition to the normal combat actions of the cards.

It's a fighting game where you are trying to reduce your opponent to a K.O. The crux of Yomi is making your best guess of what type of card your opponent is going to play each turn in the hopes of playing one that will beat it.

The base game has 10 different characters, and there is an in-app purchase option for 10 additional characters. There are also higher powered versions of each character which can be purchased or unlocked through gameplay.

Since the game is primarily about understanding your opponent's play style, playing online against other players is the standard game. You can also play matches against an easy or challenging AI to practice and to unlock the more powerful EX versions of the characters.

### 5/5 — Must Play.

*2015-03-24*

Sirlin knows games. Sirlin knows balance. His iteration has crafted one of the finest card games on the market, with an amazing, original theme.
"Yomi", or "reading", takes the age old game of Rock-Paper-Scissors and turns it into a riveting rendition of a 2D fighting game, without needing dexterity or substantial memorization.
The app is a smooth and gorgeous translation of the card game. Highly recommended. Well worth the app price.

### 5/5 — Amazing game

*2015-02-26*

Pricey for an IOS game, but cheaper than the physical version and I play it way more than console games I spend $50-60 on. Great community, excellent well balanced characters with great themes... I could go on, but buy it.

### 5/5 — Fighting game extract

*2015-01-02, version 1.06*

Perfect card game. Takes the core of what makes trading card games fun, minus the wallet draining "trading" part. Worth your time for the modest one-time fee.

### 5/5 — Amazing Game Design

*2014-12-07*

This has all the hallmarks of a great game: easy to learn, difficult to master. On the surface it looks like it's some kind of Rock, Paper, Scissors game, but play it for a few hours and learn that it is such a deep game. How else can the best players rack up 80% win rates? If you like well designed games, put some time in to learn this great design!

### 5/5 — Hearthstone addict

*2014-11-22, version 1.06*

This game made a fan out of me. Coming from a hearthstone addict.

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — Very buggy

*2021-10-31*

Somehow slow and no updates five years, don’t buy

### 1/5 — great but read

*2016-12-07*

great game but devs no longer support this and online lobby is ghost town. amazing game, but prob best played local

### 1/5 — Awful Tutorial

*2014-04-18, version 1.01*

The tutorial is a convoluted mess.

### 2/5 — More Money?

*2023-01-03*

I own the physical version of this game and just bought it for 14$. I’m very disappointed to learn that only half of the characters are unlocked and Sirlin wants *another* $14 to unlock the rest! Screw that, what’s disappointment. I’d get a refund if I could based on that alone.

### 2/5 — Cards displayed wrong on iPhone 6+

*2015-06-20*

I would like to enjoy learning this game but all the time card images show up wrong. Even when the values seem to be right that really disturbed my experience. Fix that and get a better rating by me!

Update: Still true for the newest version. I contacted the developers without any results so far.

### 2/5 — Awesome game but DEAD multiplayer

*2014-09-06, version 1.05*

The game is solid, but either no one is on or there is a bug from hell on iOS. 9.99 is a lot of cheddar for an iOS game. It's too bad the multiplayer is a desert. Save your money, until this is fixed. I will update if that's the case.

### 2/5 — Terrible Controls

*2014-04-23*

Good game, but the iPad controls are terrible. The onscreen buttons for flipping a card, skipping to the next card, and selecting a card are unpredictable and often perform the wrong function. This is especially frustrating when you mean to flip a card and end up playing it instead. Terrible.

### 2/5 — 1st timers will have a hard time

*2014-04-19*

As someone who never played the card game, but has played tons of TCGs, the design of this game comes off as pretty much incomprehensible. Yeah, I could muddle my way through it but what I thought was going to be a series of fun counter attacks turned out to be a frustrating Rock Paper Scissors guessing game combined with special rules you have to learn for nearly every action, plus poker rules, plus jokers, plus aces are special case, plus each card has unique abilities, plus even vs odd number cards, plus unique character abilities, plus 6 stages for every round, plus... Anyway, the point is it feels like playing a game of calvinball in card game form.

### 2/5 — Waste of money

*2014-04-18*

Was expecting more of a polished game for $9.99. The controls are glitchy, and the versus option is not working. Took several attempts to create an account. Please fix bugs.

### 3/5 — Patch bugs

*2015-05-27, version 1.09*

Great game but I think the latest patch is causing problems; my cards are showing up with the wrong artwork on them.

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — Still good Al these years later

*2022-07-02*

Keep updating the app dudes! It’s awesome as it’s ever been.

### 5/5 — Simple to learn, hard to master

*2020-05-10*

This game has been on my iPhone for years, and it offers so much gameplay for the price I paid. Every so often I will get reminded of how deep and enjoyable the game is. It’s Rock Paper Scissors on the surface, but anyone who looks deeper will realise that’s it’s also about shaping the odds in your favour, and timing your plays.

### 5/5 — Great Game

*2018-06-17, version 1.16*

### 5/5 — Great Mechanics, Great App Implementation

*2016-11-21*

I really enjoy Yomi, so playing it on the go is quite nice! It's awesome how people using the app version and others using Steam version can interact! More people should give this game a chance! If ye enjoyed the mindgames of Street Fighter or other fighting games in the past, and don't mind card games, this is something ye should really check out!!

### 5/5 — Absolut zu empfehlen!!!

*2016-10-19*

### 5/5 — Great game

*2016-06-07*

Awesome game, well worth the purchase. If you are on the fence, go online and give it a try for free.

### 5/5 — Awesome

*2016-02-20*

Great to see Yomi on mobile. Beautiful artwork and a decent implementation of the game from the web version.

### 5/5 — Yomi

*2016-02-16, version 1.15*

Great card fighting strategy game!!!

### 5/5 — Love it!

*2016-02-11*

Found this through their other (deck building) game. This is great, a premium fighting game with cards. The price is a bit higher than App Store usual standards, but I think it is worth it. Great tutorials, each character has some very different special skills, solid app with nice design and UI choices. I will be picking up the extra 10 char IAP and playing this for a long time.

### 5/5 — Great IOS implementation of a great card game

*2016-02-09, version 1.15*
