I use it for my kanji study (and I highly recommend the Outlier kanji dictionary add on) and as an excellent dictionary when reading. All of the features have worked very well for me — especially Lists and Text Analyzer. I use Lists to keep track of groups of kanji I am currently studying as well as for fast and easy review of past groups. I also give top marks and thanks to Yomiwa’s developer — who is very responsive! Recently something went wrong and I lost all of my lists on my iPhone but not on my iPad. Try as I might I couldn’t restore the lists on my iPhone. I reached out to the developer who got back to me right away, took the time to review my backup files to figure out what had caused the issue and successfully resolve it for me. Most of the time I only remember half word and it’s easy to find it with “start with” or “ends with” option. It translates not just in English but in many languages. I would totally recommend. It’s very useful the “create folder”, since I can divide many categories of words, plus there’s a section of “word of the day” to improve your vocabulary. Verbs have every conjugation and it can also give you examples. ### 5/5 — 大好き💕 *2026-01-27, version 5.6.5* I love this app. I use it regularly and it virtually never lets me down. I especially like the ability to use the touch screen to input any kanji I want to translate in a hurry. You can also use this on Android and iOS . There’s only so much databases you can draw from (JMDict here) so I ended up on Yomiwa for its usability and polished UI. However, it would be nice to have an alternative app icon design which better fits with the new Liquid Glass themes. Especially one of the strongest functions of it is that you can find out words or single letter by drawing them on the drawing box that is very helpful if you want to know what kanji letter it is. Generally speaking, This app is good. I have two improvement requests on iOS. 1/ Fix the dark theme bug that makes articles not readable when in dark mode 2/ (probably the most critical for learning) add an algorithm like the one on Anki app for the flashcards distribution in the study section. The algorithm would push forward the cards with many prior failures to answer and postpone the cards with prior multiple success. Thank you !! ## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated) ### 1/5 — The camera feature is not very useful comparing to Goggle Translate. *2026-07-03, version 5.7.8* I payed 39$ for the full version so I could use the camera feature to translate symbols during my trip in Japan. The app could not provide any good translation of sentences which is basically useless. I just deleted the app and switched to Google Translate which works perfectly and it’s free. ### 1/5 — Geld (35€) nicht wert! Für Touristen völlig ungeeignet! Google macht es 1000 mal besser und gratis *2025-05-17* Die Video Übersetzung war schon vor 20 Jahren bei Google besser. Bemerkenswerter Weise sind alle guten Bewertungen auch 5-10 Jahre alt. Vor 10 Jahren mag das noch ok gewesen sein. Es übersetzt in der Kamera Funktion nur einzelne Wort , keine Sätze oder so. Bei Google kann man heute ganze Zeitschriften flüssig lesen, hier im besten Falle mal ein einzelnes Wort nachschlagen, aber auch das kann man besser raten und bis es erkannt wird wenn überhaupt :-( Wenn es dann „übersetzt“ wird dann sehr oft nur ins englische ( was man nicht mal abschalten kann) oder total falsch. Will man eine deutsche Übersetzung muss man fast immer noch zusätzlich scrollen oder extra drücken. Schon mittlere Schrift Größen erkennt er kaum, kleine niemals. Es kommt nur ein wirrer Wort Salat heraus. Das ist keine Übersetzung. Es werden anders als beschrieben keine ganze Sätze übersetzt . Auch gibt , anders als Glauben gemacht, keine wirkliche Web Funktion. Da ist zwar irgend ein Browser integriert , aber der hat null Übersetzungsprogramm Funktion. Man kann nicht mal ein Etikett lesen, geschweige denn eine Speisekarte. Für Touristen völlig ungeeignet! Das sind 35€ denen ihr dann hinterher laufen könnt. Die Bedienung ist als 1990 programmiert . Noch mal : Für Touristen völlig ungeeignet . Ich hatte es als offline Alternative zu Google gekauft. Völlige Geld Verschwendung. Der Schwerpunkt liegt auf : Großer Offline-Wörterbuchdatenbank (320 000+ Einträge) mit Beispielsätzen, Synonymen und Kanji-Informationen Kamera-/OCR-Suche, um unbekannte Wörter in Büchern, Manga oder Untertiteln schnell nachzuschlagen – sie ist bewusst auf Wort- und Kanji-Erkennung optimiert, nicht auf fließende Satzübersetzungen Text-Analyzer, der längere Texte automatisch in Wortbausteine zerlegt und Vokabelkarten daraus erstellt Spaced-Repetition-Flashcards zum gezielten Wiederholen neuer Wörter und Kanji Handschrifterkennung, Stroke-Order-Diagramme, Audio-Beispiele und viele weitere Lernhilfen – alles ohne Internetverbindung nutzbar Für Touristen, die unterwegs Speisekarten oder Schilder vollständig übersetzen möchten, ist Google Translate tatsächlich besser geeignet. It should be clearly noted what features are present in the free version and what part of a subscription. It is of course fine to charge for such functionality, but in my opinion the concept of having to pay continuously is not acceptable. **Developer response:** Hello. I attempted to back up my data and it crashed. Not it can’t even get past the logo without crashing. ### 1/5 — Not intuitive, didn’t work *2022-05-23, version 5.2.7* Could not get this to work, I figured out how to open the camera, then took a photo of my antique Japanese calligraphy sign but alas couldn’t figure it out after that. The photo could not be moved, there was no prompts as to what to do next, no scanning graphic of the symbol followed by translation. Nothing just stuck with the photo scene. I pressed every other button and link but none was the one to translate photo. On peut en plus la mettre en français, il y a la possibilité d’avoir des flash card, des rappels de réviser. Vraiment une application qui me booste dans mon apprentissage. The interface, functionality, and the fact that it’s free made it a clear winner. I also discovered recently that the developer is incredibly responsive to bug fixes and suggestions!!! Literally they pushed out a requested update in less than 24 hours 🫪🫪🫪.
