### 5/5 — Perfect!

*2024-10-23*

The best way to learn is through immersion paired with spaced repetition, and this affordable app has both! Matches your JLPT level and lets you add unknown words to a built-in SRS.

### 5/5 — An incredibly helpful and useful Japanese learning tool

*2024-10-10*

I'm a beginner in learning Japanese and found myself looking for ways to slowly improve my Japanese reading skills and came across Yomu Yomu. Yomu Yomu provides readily available Japanese stories to read regardless of your Japanese level. You can read beginner stories, advanced stories, and even expert stories, allowing you to test your Japanese reading skills regardless of your Japanese level. Each story contains translations of words and allows assistance in reading Kanji words so even if you get lost in a story, your able to quickly understand words that threw you off. I'm surprised that this go-to learning tool hasn't been notified by the language acquisition community, because this app is incredibly helpful.

### 5/5 — Best reading app for beginners

*2024-10-04*

Most reading apps I've tried are too hard for me. This one actually has things you can read even as a beginner.

### 5/5 — This app is wonderful!

*2024-10-03*

This app is absolutely wonderful! I love the stories that range from cute kid's stories to very serious little tales. The listening options is very useful, especially for beginners.

### 5/5 — Good stories

Great practical way to study Japanese by reading stories. Having the translation readily available and simple words really helps me as a beginner.

### 5/5 — To good

I just went to Japan and I started reading this app. I learned a lot of Japanese thank you Yomu Yomu !

### 5/5 — i used to love this app

*2024-09-19*

i used this app almost daily to help with my learning, but now you need to pay to listen to the audio and you're planning on making some of the stories exclusive too? well thanks, now you're just another resource that i cant access.

### 5/5 — Génial !!

*2024-09-10*

Super application qui permet de lire des textes de tout niveau et qui permet de s’améliorer rapidement.
J’aime beaucoup le fait de pouvoir appuyer sur une phrase qu’on ne comprend pas pour en avoir la traduction !

### 5/5 — Good app to learn Japenese!

*2024-09-08*

This app is very friendly for a Japanese learners. With romanization and audio, it’s easier for me to learn the pronunciation. It has so many stories from beginner to higher level, with the functions to save and review vocabularies. It will also show the levels of vocabulary from N1 to N5 so you will know whether you should memorize them now or later. Highly recommended!

### 5/5 — Super useful

*2024-08-21*

This app is a wonderful because it has reading material for any level, you can save words as you go to study with the flash card feature later, and there is a speed-adjustable audio to read along with. All of these features are free (there is a paid version so somehow it gets even better) love love love this app :)

### 5/5 — Great for reading and listening!

*2024-08-10*

Amazing for listening to Japanese stories and reading! Really helpful for immersion learning.

### 5/5 — Best Japanese reader app I’ve used so far :)

*2024-07-28*

How is this app free? 🥹 It’s just a really comprehensive app with engaging stories, audio (which you can adjust the speed of), accurate translations, kanji + roma, and ability to save new words to practice. Can’t fault it at all - except looking forward to having even more short stories!

### 5/5 — Good but lacking advanced content

*2024-07-24*

I recently downloaded this app and overall, it has Been very useful and easy to use. However, going into it I was already reading at the master level which has around 15 or so things to read. While I do think that most people start at a much lower level and have more content, I still would like some more advanced lessons😊.

### 5/5 — Fantastic!

*2024-07-24*

Really great app. The content is super , and the UI is intuitive as well.

### 5/5 — I’m really happy with this app

*2024-07-13*

At my Japanese level (intermediate) it’s hard to find things to read that are not too hard or too easy. But this app has plenty of relevant or interesting yet accessible articles packed with useful vocab!

I also really like the built in flash card system and how we can hide or display furigana as we see fit when reading.

The stories I read were also really good! I particularly enjoyed The Human Chair, it was nice to be able to enjoy the work of a famous Edogawa Ranpo at my level! And it was just a fun read!

Eagerly waiting for more stories like this one to be added!

### 5/5 — Fluent Japanese User Opinion

*2024-06-25*

Great App for Beginners and Intermediate learners. Content a bit too easy for Advanced or Fluent level in my opinion(needs harder content like 夏目漱石 level content or novels (maybe 短編/short story versions), not just children stories like 浦島太郎, but I’ve been fluent for 15+ years so I’m a bit biased. I wouldn’t really consider N2 level to be “Master” level stuff , but the app has a ton of potential!

### 5/5 — Well done — hoping for more!

*2024-06-17*

I’m currently at an N2 reading level. Since leaving Japan, I’ve been hoping to find ways to keep up my Japanese language skill. This app has been such a blessed find! The content is stuff I actually care to read, so it doesn’t feel like effort to study. Love that you can save words to review with in-app flashcards, too!

Can’t say enough good things. Really hope this app gets more attention and resources dedicated to it. Keep it up! ☺️

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — cant get past the "preparing recommendations" loading screen :(

*2024-08-15*

im very excited to use this app as i see the good reviews, but the app is not letting me use it at all, im just stuck staring at a mini book flipping its pages as it tries to load, i left the app open as i ate my lunch and after 10 minutes still nothing. im not sure what went wrong but please fix this as i am so excited to use this app to learn japanese :(

### 3/5 — Keep in mind

*2026-02-12*

Plenty of material for beginners but a bit less material for more advanced learners

### 3/5 — Promising, but not there yet

*2025-11-29*

Note: I am a premium subscriber of the app, and my review reflects both paid and free features.

Yomu Yomu is a good graded reader resource. However, it is lacking features that other resources like Satori Reader have. The biggest downside of Yomu Yomu is that it uses AI for its audio book feature, so it sounds exceptionally unnatural (you can get around this by increasing the reading speed to 1.25x, to sound a bit more human).

I have been a subscriber of Du Chinese, made by the same company, for years. I truly believe that Du Chinese is the best Mandarin learning resource out there. It’s very accurate, uses human voice acting for its audio book feature, and teaches grammar.

I am using Yomu Yomu, and paying for it, over better resources currently available on the market, because I truly believe Yomu Yomu can get to the same level as Du Chinese.

Currently, Yomu Yomu is good, not great, but very promising. I’m excited to see it improve, and I look forward to amending my review to give it 5 stars in the future.

**Developer response:** Thank you for your kind words! We'll do our best to keep improving the app!

### 3/5 — Good for reading practice but…

*2024-05-17*

Good for reading practice but since other fonts are locked behind a paywall, be ready for some incorrect kanji and a font that is closer to mandarin standard font compared to Japanese standard font.
For many beginners, this might be a problem, as they may not be able to read the mandarin style font for certain kanji.

Just be wary of that if you’re going to make this your primary source of reading material!

**Developer response:** Thank you for your feedback! Please note that the issue with text using the wrong font has been fixed as of version 2.3.2. Thank you for reporting this!

### 5/5 — Amount of content

*2026-06-10*

I’m a self study learner and this app has been the best way to put everything I’m learning to practice while having resources that help me get it right and the flashcards for words I really want to hammer home makes it even better and practicing reading makes the vocabulary drills feel more relevant than learning them from a textbook. One of the best resources in my lineup that allows me to see the progress I’m making.

### 5/5 — Exactly what I needed!!

*2026-05-15*

A great app! I get to practice reading and listening
No kanji needed in the beginning so great to practice hiragana and katakana!
The stories to read are very fun and I already feel my japanese improving :))
One can add vocab from the story which then become flash cards
I‘ve been using it for 5 months already and even though some stories are limited for premium users which I am not- I did not feel any lackings and atm there are more than enough stories to explore
I hope they keep it that way!

### 5/5 — Super pratique

*2026-04-29*

J’adore l’application !! Les histoires sont a tous niveaux,
Mais ce que j’adore c’est surtout la possibilité d’avoir les furigana et la traduction des mots et des kanjis que l’on ne connaît pas

Franchement je recommande pour toute personne qui souhaite s’entraîner a lire !

### 5/5 — Highly recommended!

This app makes learning Japanese natural and painless. I highly recommend it to anyone

### 5/5 — Great app for studying Kanji

*2025-06-19*

I have been studying Japanese seriously for 1 year now. I have a basic understanding of grammar, and I can read hiragana and katakana. This app is quickly growing my ability and I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to learn Japanese quickly! Let me tell you, reading is very important in the Japanese language if you would ever like to visit Japan. There are plenty of signs that have 0 English on them.

## Most praised reviews (4 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — Fantastic

*2025-04-15*

An actual good app for reading and understanding Japanese. It’s grown on me a lot and I really appreciate what it does

### 5/5 — Excellent learning app

*2025-03-30*

Really love learning with this app. It’s very adaptable the way you can turn on/off things like translation and kana etc. I can’t recommend enough 😊

### 5/5 — Phenomenal!

*2024-12-16*

I’ve downloaded many fine Japanese learning apps from the App Store, but Yomu Yomu is easily the best for someone like me who can read Kana and has a basic understanding of Japanese grammar and who now just needs a bunch of easy stuff to read.

It makes reading enjoyable by hiding information and then revealing it when you need it with a simple tap. It also has audio and spaced repetition flash cards. AND you can enlarge the font size for both the main text and the Furigana if you have vision problems.

It’s a very thoughtfully produced app and I commend its creators.

### 5/5 — The best reading app I've used!

*2024-11-22*

Please add more things to read!
