## What is Yuno?

Unlock your apps with Japanese.

Yuno locks the apps you scroll too much. When you reach for one, your companion asks a quick Japanese question. Get it right and you're back in, guilt-free. Every time you open TikTok or Instagram, you learn a little Japanese.

How it works
• Pick the apps to lock: TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, games, anything.
• Open one and Yuno steps in with a short quiz.
• Answer the questions and your apps unlock for 5, 15 or 30 minutes. You choose.
• When time's up, they lock again. Every scroll becomes a mini lesson.

Block on your terms
• Lock apps all day, or on a schedule, like work hours on weekdays and all weekend.
• Choose what you're quizzed on: hiragana, katakana, kanji or vocabulary.
• Choose how many new characters can show up in a quiz, or stick to what you already know.

Learn something real
• Hiragana and katakana, row by row.
• 2,000+ kanji from N5 to N1, quizzed the way you'll meet them: you type the reading of a real word, like 参考 or 考える.
• Every new kanji comes with a word, each of its kanji explained, and an example sentence with furigana.
• 1,000+ vocabulary words, each in an example sentence.
• Every new character goes into your collection, so you can see how much you've learned.

Your day at a glance
• See which apps are locked, your streak, and everything you learned today.
• 8 animated backgrounds for your quizzes: Paper, Night, Sakura, Torii, Indigo, Hour sky, Fuji and Gold leaf.

Bonus: a widget that teaches
Put Yuno on your home screen and learn a new character every hour, even between quizzes. Tap to flip it and see the meaning, readings and a word it's used in.

Private by design
Yuno uses Apple's Screen Time to lock apps. Apple never shows us which apps you pick or how you use them, and that information never leaves your iPhone.

Free and Yuno Plus
Free: hiragana, katakana, Beginner words and N5 kanji, with 3 unlocks a day.
Yuno Plus: every kanji level and word deck, unlimited unlocks, every background and up to 3 new characters per quiz. New subscribers get a 7-day free trial.

Subscriptions renew automatically unless cancelled at least 24 hours before the end of the current period. Manage or cancel anytime in your App Store account settings.

### 5/5 — My review

*2026-11-02*

Absolutely love this app. It’s a real bookey, makes everything so easy. And best of all, no scissors needed. Highly recommend!

### 5/5 — Good for learning while you use your phone

*2026-10-29*

Creative way to learn kanji

### 5/5 — works well

*2026-10-15*

started using it and the screen locker works well, i usually learn 10-12 new vocab or kanji just by being on my phone everyday. recommend!

### 5/5 — works well for passive studying

*2026-10-13*

The locker screen works well and you can learn from N5 to N1 kanji. Pretty useful if you study for the JLPT and use your phone a lot. I’d say it’s worth giving a try.

### 5/5 — it’s good but add more words for vocab

*2026-09-24*

right now the intermediate and expert words have a few hundred but for n2 and n1 there should be more

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 1.3.0 — 2026-11-02

Kanji quizzes now work like real reading practice. Every kanji is asked as a word you'd actually read, like 参考 or 考える, and you type the reading in kana or romaji.

New kanji are introduced through a real word, with each of its kanji explained and an example sentence. After every answer you see the word's meaning and a sentence using it, and you move on when you're ready.

Free: kana, Beginner words and N5 kanji, with 3 unlocks a day. Plus unlocks every word and kanji level, unlimited unlocks, all quiz backgrounds and up to 3 new characters per quiz.

Also: smoother quiz start and small fixes.

### 1.2.0 — 2026-10-27

All words and kanji levels are now free. Kanji levels follow the JLPT reading decks, with every word from them added. The blocker can now quiz kanji inside any word, always with four choices. Free users get 5 guards a day; Plus unlocks unlimited guards, backgrounds and more new characters per quiz. Fixed apps sometimes staying locked after a passed quiz.
