Most planting calendars ask for your USDA zone and stop there. But a zone only describes one thing: how cold it gets on the worst night of winter. It says nothing about when your season actually starts, how long it lasts, or whether your July will cook a lettuce. Savannah, Georgia and Coos Bay, Oregon are both zone 9a. Their last frosts are seven weeks apart, and one gets 75 more days above 90°F than the other. Any calendar that treats them the same is going to disappoint one of those gardeners. ZoneSprout works out your dates from your state AND your zone together. WHAT GOES INTO A DATE • Last frost, averaged over 20 years • First frost, averaged over 20 years • Summer heat — days above 90°F, over 30 years • Winter chill • Days to maturity for that specific plant • Chill hours the plant needs Every date is calculated from weather records. None of it is written by a chatbot. PLANTING CHARTS FOR YOUR EXACT LOCATION See when to start seeds indoors, when to transplant, when to direct sow, when it will bloom, and when you will be picking — for more than 2,600 plants, laid out across the year. Open a chart for one plant, for a whole category like vegetables or herbs, or for everything you grow. Print any chart, or save it as a PDF to send to whoever is watering while you are away. SEARCH BY WHAT THE PACKET SAYS Seed packets say Sun Gold, Cherokee Purple, Blue Lake — not Tomato and Bean. ZoneSprout knows more than 4,400 named varieties, so the thing in your hand is the thing you look up. WHAT IS THIS PLANT? Photograph anything you cannot name and get the likeliest matches, with reference pictures to check against. If it is one of ours, you also get whether it is native where you garden, whether it is a problem there, and when to plant it. You get the likeliest matches with reference pictures you can open full screen and swipe through, and for anything in the ZoneSprout catalogue, whether it is native where you garden, whether it carries a local warning, and when to plant it. My favourites now reads as a shortlist: how many grow here, how many can go in now, how many have gone for this year — and the whole year drawn on one strip. Tap any count to see just those plants. The Plants tab could crash the second time you opened My favourites. Searching inside My favourites now searches your favourites, instead of the whole catalogue. Attract wildlife can be narrowed by what kind of plant you want — herbs, privacy hedges, fragrant plants and the rest. Screens that load a list now take shape instead of showing a spinner. ### 1.0.2 — 2026-09-03 Tapping "Schedule chart" left the plant list on screen with a small spinner beside it, so the tap looked like it had not worked. The chart also re-downloaded the plant list it already had. Searching the native plant list closed the keyboard after one character. The search box was being rebuilt the moment you typed, so the field you were typing into disappeared. Search now puts the plant you named first. Typing "tomato" listed Tomato last, behind anything with a tomato variety in it. Every plant in a seed tray drew the same carrot. The tray was showing the category's icon instead of the plant's own drawing, so Tomato, Broccoli and Onion were identical. Germination times were missing from the sow screen. They were in the database the whole time. On an iPad in portrait, the end of the planting bar ran off the edge of the screen — taking the only two ways out of planting mode with it. The chart's search box shrank to fit whatever you had typed. Signing out could leave the app still showing Pro until something asked the server. It now finds out straight away. Searching for a variety works properly: ask for "cherry tomato" and you get one. ### 1.0.1 — 2026-09-02 Search now puts the plant you named first.
