Former review: Unputdownable: I spend more time on this app than pretty much anything else. What could be more fun than going on a safari to Kenya, Costa Rica, Italy or the Thames Estuary (eh?) and identifying wild animals from the comfort of your own armchair? And furthermore know that all the fun you’re having is helping scientists research or monitor species and habitats around the world?! Get this app. ### 1/5 — Sad to go, the app killed it *2022-03-18, version 5.1.5* More than ten years and 10s of thousands identified. When this app replaced the old one, it killed it. The app is unusable. Instant wild “fixed” it by deleting the old accounts even as we were attempting to logon and get our “quota” to avoid deletion. This has been the case for a few weeks. ### 1/5 — App doesn’t work :-( *2022-01-19, version 5.1.5* Every time I click on this app, it opens onto the starting screen and then just cuts out back to my Home Screen. ### 1/5 — Sadly, this version is useless *2020-09-24, version 5.1.5* Before this app was rewritten several years ago, it was the reason I bought a new phone. I played it every day and had thousands of animal IDs logged on the app. After the upgrade I was unable to access any of my IDs and assumed that they just needed to work some bugs out. It’s still completely unusable. Crashes, or returns to a long list of photos that will not allow the user to ID anything. If you scroll past there are more photos from other cameras, but clicking on them makes the app crash. Really sad. This was my all time favorite app. ### 1/5 — I now have a crying daughter - gee, thanks guys! *2020-01-14, version 5.1.3* This app is rated at 4+ and so my 10yr old daughter was really looking forward to getting signed up to contribute. She was really excited. Now she’s in floods of tears because because you can’t do anything of value without signing up and you need to be 16+ to do that. The app uses a comments section provided by Disqus - and we wont be lying in order to sign up nor have the associated risks of leaving a 10yr old in a potentially unsafe space. Please rate this app at 16+ to set expectations appropriately instead of upsetting children like this! ### 1/5 — Worthless *2017-11-05, version 1.0.0* These folks have got a lot of work to do. Sadly when I tried to register it wouldn't let me, I checked all the information and nothing was misspelt but just wouldn't let me create an account. Splash screen opens then the app shuts down. You’d think they’d check it works before the article was released wouldn’t you? ### 1/5 — App doesn’t work *2023-01-01, version 5.1.5* Downloaded the app, but it doesn’t load and no support from ZSL ## Most praised reviews (6 highest-rated) ### 5/5 — Perfect for the “armchair conservationist” *2018-01-18* Take it from me, ‘cause I’ve been using this app since 2011 (OK, this app and the previous incarnation), this is THE best (and only!) app for those who want to help scientists keep tabs on wild life, I.D. animals you might not otherwise get to see, chat with other users and also watch videos/learn about wild life from places you might not live in. I haven’t see one single app that offers sooo much for sooo little. All you need is a little knowledge and time and you will be rewarded with stunning pics from several different cams, all the while, helping to conserve wildlife for future generations. ### 4/5 — Fun citizen science! *2020-04-21* Awesome App! Fun and easy! Just one suggestion for some new catergories. Especially useful is "unidentifiable” for when you see just a boss part like an ear. Perhaps also some general categories auch as “insect” or “small bird”. ### 4/5 — Animalazing! Needs an improvement. *2020-01-06, version 5.1.2* This app is great! Even if you don’t sign in and continue as a guest. But one thing, when you tag animals and click “Confirm Identification” it doesn’t do it. You click and re-click still the button doesn’t disappear or do what it says. Only once you go back to the page before, then it disappears. I haven’t spotted any other lags, apart from that it takes a while to load and it doesn’t say it’s loading. Instead it’s just blank. Back to the good things. You count the animals, tag the species, and help zoologists at the same time. It’s really good if you want to find out different animals or learn about wildlife in different countries, or even follow a camera to get the latest and greatest pics. I would recommend this app to anyone who is interested in wildlife. If you have read my review, thank you and have fun tagging! ### 3/5 — No longer works but it was a great run and could have been paid for *2022-01-29, version 5.1.5* The app was buggy, and not brilliantly designed, but people persevered with it and got a lot of enjoyment. It offered a window to worlds we couldn’t get to through lockdown. It would have been well worth paying for though if the money had gone to improvements and conservation. Could have been 5 star, but no longer works. ### 2/5 — What happened?? *2022-01-08, version 5.1.5* This app no longer works at all and appears to have been completely abandoned by ZSL. It would be such a shame for it to be moth balled now we are stuck at home more than ever. Please please update this and get it back working. I know I and many others will have enjoyed identifying the species that stroll by the cameras all over the world. ### 2/5 — Fantastic Project but App needs to Improve *2018-02-15, version 3.0.0* It’s important to remember that this is a volunteer based development on a great project. The old app did need updating and although this has definitely been updated, it has currently lost its magic: - Identifications are clunky and take a long time to select with Load More as a button rather than just scrolling down. - You can no longer sail through different areas - the app keeps you within one place, often seeing the same camera over and over making it very long winded to come out of an area and into another. - Very hard to see what you’ve identified. - The community spirit has been lost as I can no longer see where to view comments and again, this is very messy with a third party interface coming in to play. --- *Data collected daily from the US App Store and indexed by [AppsHunter](https://appshunter.io/).
