## What is Zubane?

Har zubaan ek pul hai. Every language is a bridge.

Zubane is a field guide to the Hindi–Urdu language continuum — the words it borrowed, the two scripts that write it, and the songs and sounds that carry it. Beautiful, precise, and honest about what it doesn't know.

FIVE THOUSAND WORDS, BUILT IN
A 5,000-word Hindustani dictionary, each entry in Devanagari and true Nastaliq with its meaning, origin, grammatical gender, and the surprising list of languages that share it — from Turkish to Swahili to Indonesian. It works offline, and it's honest: where scholars disagree about a word's origin, the entry says so instead of guessing.

YOUR OWN USTAAD
Chat with an AI tutor from Lucknow. Write in Hindi-Urdu — any script, even English letters — and every message comes back gently corrected, explained in plain English, translated, and answered, so the conversation keeps moving at your level. Choose replies in Roman, Devanagari, or Nastaliq. The tutor asks your consent before the first message, and your conversation is stored only on your device.

ASK ZUBANE ANYTHING
Type any Hindi–Urdu word and get the same full treatment, generated on the spot — scripts, origin, and story. Clearly labeled as AI-generated, with a tap to flag anything that reads wrong. Saved to your own list for next time.

SONG BREAKDOWNS
Type a Hindi–Urdu song and get its language DNA: where its words come from, what the poetry means, and the film, composer, and lyricist behind it — plus one-tap links to find it on Spotify, Apple Music, or YouTube. Original commentary, never reproduced lyrics.

HEAR IT SAID PROPERLY
Every word carries a pronunciation button backed by studio-quality neural voices, each word routed to the voice that says it best. Articles read themselves aloud, too, with a player you can pause, scrub, and speed up.

THE NUQTA FILES
One dot changes everything. A full 51-letter chart pairs each Devanagari letter with its Nastaliq counterpart and its sound, and shows how Devanagari writes borrowed sounds with a single fragile dot while Nastaliq gives each its own letter — a difference that may be quietly steering how millions of people speak.

LEARN TO READ THE SCRIPTS
Three practice modes teach you to actually read Devanagari and Nastaliq: a letter drill, a mirror match between the two scripts, and real words to sound out — with a quiet meter that tracks your progress across all 51 letters.

ESSAYS, WORD OF THE DAY, QUIZ
Short, sharp articles on sound change in progress — each one written in Hindi and Urdu as well as English. A new word every day. Quick quiz rounds on meanings and origins.

YOURS, IN YOUR LANGUAGE
Run the whole app in English, हिन्दी, or اردو — with full right-to-left for Urdu — and light or dark throughout.

No account. No ads. No tracking. The dictionary, scripts, practice, articles, and quiz work fully offline; the tutor, AI lookups, song breakdowns, and pronunciation audio use an internet connection.

Zubane, meaning "languages," is built on a simple premise: people who discover how much vocabulary they already share stop seeing strangers and start seeing cousins.

## Version history (last 2 releases)

### 1.7 — 2026-08-14

Meet your ustaad. Zubane introduces an AI tutor from Lucknow: write in Hindi-Urdu, any script, even English letters, and every message comes back gently corrected, explained in plain English, translated, and answered, like chatting with a patient native speaker. Choose replies in Roman, Devanagari, or Nastaliq. The tutor asks your consent before the first message, and your conversation is stored only on your device.

Five thousand words. The built-in dictionary grows from 1,000 entries to 5,000 — each in Devanagari and true Nastaliq with its meaning, origin, grammatical gender, and the languages that share it. Still works entirely offline.

Read the essays in your own language. Every article is now written in Hindi and Urdu as well as English — one Hindustani text in both scripts, set in true Nastaliq.

Also new:
• Learn to read the scripts: three practice modes in the Scripts tab — a letter drill, a mirror match between Devanagari and Nastaliq, and real words to read — with a quiet meter tracking all 51 letters
• Copy anywhere: long-press any tutor message or word entry to copy it, and select text freely on Mac
• Better on iPad and Mac: comfortable reading widths, and Return sends your message in the tutor
• Clearer pronunciation for the flap letters ड़ / ڑ
• Nastaliq lines now get the height they need, so nothing clips where text wraps
• A lookup interrupted by switching apps now finishes when you return, instead of stopping on a network error
• The privacy policy is now reachable from the About screen
• Dozens of refinements: smoother tutor scrolling, larger touch targets, and improved VoiceOver labels

### 1.5.1 — 2026-07-21
