### 5/5 — Brilliant.

*2012-04-23, version 1.003*

Oh the memories! Thanks to the Developer.

### 5/5 — Brilliant

*2012-04-23, version 1.003*

Probably my favourite app in a long while. If it had a bit more sophistication in playing the sounds and flexibility in patching between then I would def pay for it. Maybe a Pro version?

### 5/5 — Fantastic!!!

*2012-03-30, version 1.002*

Great app - very nostalgic and great sounds

### 5/5 — Great!

*2012-01-23, version 1.002*

Great!

### 5/5 — Retro joy!

*2011-11-08, version 1.0*

This is how your granny feels listening to war time songs.

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — Are you serious

*2023-04-14, version 1.012*

Money back play! Not worth 1/2 pence

### 1/5 — Junk I want my .99 back

*2013-03-25, version 1.006*

I would have given it no stars but i had to give one to post my disappointing comment .
This thing is a waste and does not even produce audio anything I'm upset and will never spend money with this developer again.

### 1/5 — Sounds and looks terrible

*2011-11-15, version 1.001*

This app does nothing but produce dissonant, scratchy noise and flash bright bar patterns on the screen. I bought it to try as an input for ableton. Maybe it'll help create something novel and good. But on it's own, you're really just paying money for a headache.

### 2/5 — No sound on iPhone

*2018-12-29, version 1.012*

Sadly.

Looks like it is working but just no sound

Someone else reported this problem on iPhone too

### 3/5 — Fun, but…

*2025-07-19, version 2.1*

Super fun and nostalgic app! However, I bought it to create chippy sound FX for sampling, but unfortunately, there’s some kind of constant chorus or other phasing effect on it (maybe it’s the crossfading between different noises?). This ruins it for that purpose for me, as I wanted it totally raw. Still fun, though!

### 3/5 — Great!

*2012-01-04, version 1.002*

This is one of my favorite apps. I have been using it for recording and performances. Are there more apps like this? If so, where?

### 4/5 — Great on iPad no sound on iPhone

*2017-05-27, version 1.007*

The iPad version is brilliant, it's a fun way to make the noises of the Spectrum load up screen and bring back nostalgia.

I also have it loaded to my iPhone, but there is no sound. The screen shows as normal, but with no sound it's pointless.

### 4/5 — Genius

*2013-08-12, version 1.006*

Love it. The developer is a beautiful human being for bringing this into the world.

My demo scene mates are gig to go mad when they see me playing this thing.

Awesome.

Bought the paint package the author makes purely to give him some cash.

Dare I beg for Audiobus support? X

### 4/5 — Really is for a specific taste

*2012-11-12, version 1.006*

Perfect for the kind of person that that doesn't really want to know what they are doing, just like making noise... I do like the spectrum noise however soooo..... NO REGRETS

### 4/5 — ZX Plectrum

*2011-11-12, version 1.001*

Absolutely brilliant brightens up a dull day.

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — Possibly best AUv3 ever

*2025-05-10, version 2.0*

Works on Mac too, thank you so much for this bit of nostalgia!

### 5/5 — I love this app.

*2021-12-07, version 1.012*

I’ve had this app for years and it makes me smile every time. Thank you Dave, ZX Plectrum is simultaneously both total genius and absolutely bonkers.

### 5/5 — Buuuuuuuuu-zit, buuuuu-zoooo

*2015-03-23, version 1.007*

Brings back my childhood!

### 5/5 — I'm impressed!

*2015-02-06, version 1.007*

I think I was looking up emulators, perhaps not even Spectrum ones, can't remember. This came up anyway and it just so happened that on one of my to-do lists was to get some samples of classic home computers loading. This discovery is far superior to that as now I can control exactly how I want it to sound! More than just a gimmick if you either want it for game design (me) or write music with these sounds (yes, really, check out Richard D James by Aphex Twin) then it's better than messing with limited options in some sample collection.

### 5/5 — Great app!

*2014-09-06, version 1.007*

Me and my friend had a great time playing on this app, I can see why it is the best iPad app ever! Great fun for a Saturday afternoon eating sweets on the sofa.

### 5/5 — Audiobus suggestion seconded!

*2013-08-18, version 1.006*

Oh, i dunno. Anyway still a laugh. Something like this may be cool in recordings. Hey hey 16k (R tape loading terror, 0:1) The hold down then let go gesture bottom right does the initial 'dooo bip' that we all know and love, nice touch.

### 5/5 — A dollar's worth of joy for only 99 cents.

*2013-08-16, version 1.006*

You're practically losing money not buying it.

### 5/5 — Low bit win

*2012-10-09, version 1.004*

I love the sounds this app produces, it seems somewhat nonlinear but that's also not a bad thing. ZX Plectrum has become an essential in my low bit arsenal.

### 5/5 — Woah

*2012-04-24, version 1.003*

Simply amazing. All the memories of sitting there waiting for a game to load and being mesmerised by the cacophony of flashing lights and screeching noise like something out of the Ipcress Files, and now I can play it? Genius!

### 5/5 — awesome

*2012-04-23, version 1.003*

This app really made me smile in a way I didn't expect. I have just spent the last five minutes "loading" imaginary Spectrum games because the sounds are absolutely perfect. Absolutely pointless app and pure geek perfection =)
